We are writing this letter as a plea to all aermodelers from around the
world.

There is a need to help Pavel Bogach, a young 18 year old F1B flyer
from Ukraine. He also flys F1A. Some of you may remember him as he was a
guest of Roger Morrell for the Max Man contest this past year. He has
very serious medical problem. His family requests that we do not dicuss
publically the details of his condition. Information, including x-rays
have been given to a US Doctor, who is a FAI sportsman and a specialist
in this medical area. Pavel's family wanted an second opinion. The
doctor confirmed that the treatment proscribed was similar to that
he would get in the USA. Although Ukraine has socialized medicine it does not
cover some expenses. One of these expenses is a major component that is
necessary for the success of treatment. We personally
have been in touch with his friends and family and know that there is a need.
They have set up a bank account in the US but we personally don't feel
comfortable sending money to this account. We have sources that can get money
to his family for his medical expenses. Please help us fight for Pavel's
survival.

His family wishes that we do not discuss details with him as he has only
been told that he is very ill. We do respect this and if you have contact
with him please do not discuss this issue.

Checks can be mailed to us at 2346 Cheyenne Drive, Bishop, CA 93514 USA
If your not able to donate please keep him in your prayers.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Thank You So Much
Brian and Janna VanNest

Jorgen !

For your all moving fin/rudder: This is an ideal application
for the recently discussed bird section with the lump along the underside.
The bird's wing bone is analogous to the pin coming up from the tailboom upon
which your fin/rudder is speared The lump would be going up
one side of the fin..

Make sure you have it on the right side, if you get my meaning....

At last, a breath of fresh air in the great F1C controversy. Listen to the
rationality of Aringer`s argument. What we need is taller F1C fliers.

Sorry Roger, wrong Fever, I do not burn yea forsooth, from visiting Lost Hills.
It is obvious the followup to the cases of Valley Fever after the
Worlds is being taken seriously.
I have been approached by our Health Department, in response to
American inquiries,
and been asked to fill in a questionaire and provide a blood sample for
analysis in America.
I gather all the Kiwis who went to the worlds are being tracked down also.
The bloke who contacted me pointed out that there can be traces in the blood,
though no clinical symptoms are evident.
It looks like the survey could be world wide.

Roger,

I copied last year's announcement for the contest thus forgot to change the
dates as noticed by Larry Norvall.

The correct dates for the Desert Challenge for 2002 are January 5 and 6. The
contest is held on the first full weekend in January unless the dates are too
close to the New Year's holidays.

George Fuller (Mr 'Dixielander') has been hospitalised twice since returning
to the UK after attending the W/C as a supporter. I spoke to him today
(Friday) and he says he's feeling a lot better now that his medications have
been amended....

It seems he became a centre of attraction to the British medical authorities
as Valley Fever was not a thing they'd come across before, with everyone who
went to California now being medically examined for a complete research
project, and copies of emails to/from the GBR authority to the USA
equivalent.

Gearing tally at the W.C.

I want to thank Gerhard Aringer for the tally on the use of gears at
the World Championships. That does put things in a different light. My
naive impression was that most of the top finishers were using them.
My "spies" will be put on bread and water for a week and recieve fifty
lashes from an old Ronytube fuselage.

I believe it is Gerhard's elegant flapper that I saw pictures of on
the NFFS site. Those photos really stirred up long dormant juices for
this old variable airfoil advocate! I damn near got sucked in to
building one before I caught myself in time and reluctantly put down
the drafting pencil.

fin airfoil
===========

Dear Jorgen, you do ask an interesting question.

I have pondered the same myself -- but for the catagories of CAT
(catapult) and HLG along with F1C so it may not apply directly.

To me it seems the big advantage in having the fin airfoil backwards
in that it is not speed sensitive to Rn changes thus preventing spiral
dives when the ship tightens up in a strong thermal. This would become
an important feature if there was no wash-in on the inside panel.

My suggested experimental approach would be to combine an assymetrical
airfoil with an autorudder. When the auto rudder kicks over the
airfoil assumes a reflexed airfoil shape rather than a strongly
pro-active cambered one. So, looking from the back the "bulge" should
be on the right side with the auto-rudder counteracting it. If someone
with more experience advises differently, then forget every thing I've
suggested and go with them.

There are also interesting things that can be done with assymetrical
wing weighting...but that is a different story.

CF F1B props

Brooks' problems with unidirectional CF molded onto balsa cores has a simple
solution that uses the materials he already has. Just bias the grain by a
few degrees, top camber opposite to the bottom. Indoor flyers have been
using a similar method for EZB props for decades. However, since only one
sheet of balsa is used per blade, the grain is biased by about 10 degrees
from the spar axis.

Dear Roger. Please post on sen, thanks.

I am looking for a Galbreath clamp-ring Nelson mount for a standard
drive Nelson. to be fitted to an Oliver front end tube, dia 1.79" .
Anyone out there got one for sale? This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

unidirectional CF
=================

Roger:
The thinnest uni carbon fiber I know of is the 50 gram / meter 2 (1.5 oz/ yd
2) prepreg that cures up around .002" this is the material we use to make
our ultra light uni laminate. This is a prepreg so you need to set up to
use a 250 F cure prepreg. The lightest dry uni carbon we have is a 2.9 oz /
yd 2 that is .004" thick. These thicknesses are based on curing the fabric
with a minimum amount of resin under a high pressure.
Building a part that has both good bending stiffness and torsional stiffness
at the lowest weight is a problem common to many composite parts. The best
method I have found is to use two layers of unidirectional carbon on each
side of the core. Align each of them span wise on the part but make one
layer +15 deg from the span wise line and the other -15 deg from the same
reference line. This lay up will give both good bending stiffness and good
torsional stiffness with the minimum amount of fiber weight. You can tailor
the stiffness of the part by changing the angle, less angle gives better
bending stiffness and more( up to 45 deg) gives better torsional stiffness.
I hope this helps
Matt Gewain
