I read your comments on the tube spars. I have used the carbon "D" box on
tails in fact the model that did the rounds at the WC is thus equiped. I
have found that these tails tend to be a bit heavier than the tubular spar
configurattion, say 0.5 gram. I agree that these tails are stiffer, in
fact, I think, too stiff and are thus prone to damage. Having tried several
methods I find that the tubular spar is the best for me in that I can get
the weight right and it has the corect degree of stiffness.

If they (tubular spars) snap a repair is easily made. A piece of the
correct dia wire coated with a release agent is threaded down the spar and
the whole realinged and any pieces put back. Depending on damage a wrap of
Kevlar thread or carbon sock. Hit with cyano and remove wire! back in
business with minimal fuss.

The Other World Champs
=======================

Mr SCAT,

Not all your readers may have been aware of the World Champs also happening at
Lost Hills at the same time as the Free Flight version. The World Food Ordering
Championships took place at Denny's Restaurant Lost Hills during the Endless
October. People from 30 nations took place, even though some of them didn’t
realise they were competing. The rules were simple; a team of three each
order a breakfast, lunch and dinner from Denny’s with as few questions
back from the waiter as possible.

Of course, different menus have different degrees of difficulty (DOD). For
example ordering a garden salad with ranch dressing produces a lower DOD
than a Slam, easy over eggs, English muffin, beans instead of tomatoes.
The scoring works by deducting a point for each question asked by the
waiter, so if you order a steak and forget to define how you want it
cooked you would loose a point. All clear ?

Anyhow, the GB team of Ball, Edge and Williams came out top. Weeks of practice
were required to hone the skill required to pull this one off. Said team
manager Martin Dilly "These guys are really good; they deserved to win. Even I
take it seriously by ordering food at least twice a day – it's a
tough job !"
>From a possible 9 maxes (a perfect order per person, minimum DOD of 7,
is a max) the Brits managed a score of 7.7. Edge cleaned up and got the
the pudding menu but Ball dropped one order when he forgot to ask for Jack
cheese on his baked potato. Williams too missed a perfect order when
the waiter asked if he wanted mustard with his meat. In a lowly 10th place
were the local US team who each time missed out on the catch-all
question "Would you like some more coffee Sir ?".

For Denny's the lure of a World Champs in their restaurant was too much to
miss. Asked how long it had taken to train the waiters to ask as
many questions as possible, the manager said "Do you want a two minute
interview or the longer five minute one ?.".

That's most interesting indeed.

I'd add an observation about full size gliders: These generally use a
near-symmetric stab with quite of around 8% of wing area and in the order of
8% thick with a blunt LE. The moment arm must be around 4-5 mean chords.
Wing sections are quite thick, laminar types - some Eppler sections have
been used and the Wortmann sections were also popular; modern gliders are
using considerably thinner sections, though still of the same general type.
As Martin Symons says, the stab generally carries a small down load. In
contrast to Herman's IHLGs the stab has a much lower AR than the wing -
under half the wing AR.

I don't have Martin's experience as a glider pilot (yet) but I'm learning.

I really wonder about this. Aping full size, a 2 sq. dm stab of around AR
4.5 on a 600 mm moment would seem as if it ought to work on an F1A with a
2100-2200 mm wing (AR=18). That gives a stab of 67 mm chord and 305 mm span.
I dunno, but that chord looks small to me. I wonder if its a simple matter
of Re effects, and we just plain need a stab chord of 90 mm or so to avoid
Re effects.

I just tried my first Woebbeking stab section in California during October.
This section is 8% thick with a hi-point at 15% and the blunt LE. It
certainly works well - the stall recovery is much better than the 8% Clark-Y
it replaces. I'll certainly agree that this type of section seems to work
well as a conventionally sized (18%) stab.

I hope this is a useful contribution to the discussion.

Forcasts of bad weather scared off some potential participants.
It did become cold and windy (especially on Saturday during F1A, F1G,
and F1C), but it was flyable. Sunday saw more pronounced periods
of calm for the thermals, so the performance was better in F1B,
especially by FAI juniors John Barron and Lee Wang.

The star of the weekend is the young junior flier Josh Revkin, with
a come-from-behind win with his checkmate in F1A. His model was the
only one able to ride the turbulence for a max in the last round.
Congratulations Josh!

In the mini events there were some close battles, especially in F1G
and F1H.
