Reply to heat and steering wires

Different materials have different thermal expansion coefficients (tec).
For isotropic materials this is a known material property, but for
anisotropic stuff (composites) things get a lot more complex. Some
fibres even have a negative tec (like Kevlar and some carbon fibres) and
all resins have a positive tec. This can be put to use in designing zero
tec composites. Some parts of spacecraft (like doors that must maintain
a proper seal) are designed like this as the temperature differences can
be huge (sun vs shadow in space) by combining appropiate percentages of
negative tec fibres and positive tec resins taking into account fibre
orientation as well.
In FF models another problem occurs. The tail booms (in particular those
fancy exposed carbon ones) act as an oven. Although the thermal capacity
of the boom itself is relatively low (a bit of airflow will cool it down
fast), radiation to the air inside the boom can cause high temperatures
of the steering cables with resulting expansion of (metal) wires.
So in practice a tailboom / wire setup can be designed to have equal
expansion when exposed to slow temperature changes, however direct solar
radiation will cause different temperatures for wire and tailboom.
Best option is to use a double pull wire / pulley system (like M&K servo
tail system) for both rudder and stab to avoid any problems.
Differential expansion of tailboom and wires will result in more or less
tension in the wires, but trim will not change (unless both wires heat
up differently due to......splitting hairs;-)) Stability of a setup can
be tested by spraying freezing spray (as used in electronics) or using
spraycan dusters (held upside down to spray liquid gas) inside the tube
and watch those tailfeathers move!

Results of the 17th Annual Autumn Cup ? Seguin TX, Nov 10-11, 2001
==================================================================
Reported by Reid Simpson, CD.

The contestants at the 17th Autumn Cup were rewarded with great weather . A
front that had been pushing southward stalled north of us and gave us
excellent flying conditions. The first round was flown with a northeast wind
which really handicapped us with a bad downwind condition so the max was set
at 2:00. A hard wind shift at the start of round 2 to a southeast wind
caused a delay in starting the round until the flight line could be
established at the south end of the field. For the remainder of Saturday,
the wind was erratic, sometimes heading straight west off field into the
creek bottoms or shifting to the east into large heavy mesquite thickets.
Consequently the max was maintained at 2:00.

By the start of the fly-offs the wind had settled into a slow southern drift
up the field which allowed us to fly the 5 and 7 minute rounds without
having to move the flight line. F1A and F1B were both settled in their 5
minute round while the F1C fly-off went to a 7 minute round which was
concluded in deteriorating daylight. All in all the fly-offs were a great
conclusion to a wonderful day of flying.

One of the great things about the Autumn Cup is that in addition to the

American Cup events we include 2 additional events. Open Gas (Any powered
ship with any fuel but flown to FAI flight rules, 5 sec motor runs, and
flown by rounds) and P30 which is also flown Saturday but not by rounds).
For 17 years we have had a large number of open gas entries and the event is
well contested. The P30 event has been included for the last 2 years and is
also well contested. Including these two events has given us a very good
turnout annually at both the Autumn Cup and the Spring Cup held in April
each year and gives everyone here in the Texas area 2 strong competitive
contests flown under American Cup rules to attend. This year we had 29
contestants.

Sundays Flying of the Mini events also enjoyed good weather. The absence of
wind proved to be a blessing for Jackie Sheffer who watched his F1J model
climb to a speck in the sky when the timer malfunctioned. Jackie flew a
second model planning to find his flyaway model with his Walston unit
following the official flight. By the time Jackie has retrieved his second
model a driver on Highway 90A which crosses the end of the field to the
north, found Jackie's ship sitting on the side of the highway and drove into
the airbase with the model. No reward accepted, just glad to get the model
back to the owner.

Our Saturday night award dinner was well attended at a wonderful Mexican
restaurant. The flying was great and we had a great time. Come join us next
year at one or both of our American Cup contests in Seguin, The 9th Annual
Spring Cup in April, and/or the 18th Annual Autumn Cup which will be held
the 2nd weekend of November, 2002. We hope to see your there.

F1C and ground effects

Years ago, some clever motor racing developers devised a "ground effects" vehic
le
in which the airflow under the car generated such a low pressure that the vehic
le was
sucked down onto the track, enabling vastly increased cornering speeds.
Fortunately the development was banned. "Fortunately" because if it had been
permitted, there would be few drivers today who could control such a vehicle,
and international motor racing would have degenerated into a showcase for the
skills of a very exclusive few.

When did F1C permit its equivalent of ground effects? Not with the geared motor,
which is merely the latest in a series of developments to progressively put F1C
beyond the consideration of almost all power flyers. I suggest that F1C's
turning point, the point at which it started to become exclusive, was the permi
tting
of composite structures. Greatly improved strength and rigidity allowed the use
of ever more powerful / expensive motors, motors that would have been
unusable in an all-wood model.

To get more participation in F1C it may be necessary to ban "ground effects"
and forgo the luxury of technology at all costs. A return to traditional all-wo
od
models would restrict the use of super motors, it would make models once again
buildable in a home workroom, motors would be affordable, creativity would once
again be the domain of all rather than a plagiarized few.

And, by the way, despite its many performance-reducing regulations, motor racing
still provides a supreme challenge to drivers, and a spectacle to observers.

Dear Mr. Roger Morell

I ask you to place my message in SCAT News.

I ask to respond everyone, who has the information on extrasmall
emitters (transmiters), which one can be watched GPS. The arranging on
models of such "riser angle beacon", will allow not only to remove all
problems with delivery of models, but also can serve the most impartial
arbiter during holding competings. The capabilities GPS are vast.

Best regards.
