Just a brief note to pass on the sad news that Des McAnelly, one of the
elder statesmen of New Zealand freeflight and control line, passed away
yesterday (Nov 26th) , in the presence of his family after a battle with
throat cancer.
Des had been a modeller for over 60 years, represented NZ in many
TransTasmans and at World FF and C/L championships in both F1C and C/L
speed. for a brief period in the sixties he held the world class B team race
record, but is better known for the bewildering number and range of engine
pans produced by his foundry business for his 'other' business-McAnelly
Model Products. RIP, Des.

Roger,
Could you post this in the SCAT news. I have been asked to pick up a
motorbike to repair. It is in the newest bike storage container, the one
closest to Holloway Rd. I have keys to all the others, but not that one.
If someone who has a key to that bin could make me a copy and send it to me
I would appreciate it. My address is Bob Tymchek P. O. Box 594 Nipomo,

Nats participation and Power Classes

Hi Ross,

I agree with your comments in the recent SCAT newsletter and was
disappointed when they proposed so many new classes for classic power.

We have an event called slow power and in my opinion they should just leave
it as it was instead of diluting the competition further and further. This
is a classic problem with the AMA events and new proposals in that they are
always adding events and reducing the competition as a result. It is much
more fun to fly against a bunch of competition in an event then one with few
participants.

When you go to an AMA contest what do you choose to fly now be it Modern AMA
gas, Classic power or Nostalgia? I fly strap down modern AMA gas and have a
ball doing it and enjoy it more than nostalgia even though I fly both. I am
more then willing to fly against the autostuff in AMA gas so why do we need
to break it down even further with more events for classic power? Maybe it
is a problem on the east coast in cat 3 but it sure isn't on the west coast
where picking air and consistency usual wins whether it is autosurfaced or
not.

We get a nice mix of both strapdown and auto stuff at our contests but seem
to get more crashes with the autostuff except for the really good flyers
like Terry Kerger.

In the valley

Hi John,

I lived in Arizona for about 8 years and valley fever was a known hazard
there and my FF flying is at Taft or lost hills now for the last 26 years
that I have lived in California where it is still a hazard.

I have to worry about dust when I fly FF and water pollution when I surf,
but the fun sure offsets the risk.

The article you recommended was excellent and I think every FF guy that goes
to those areas should read it!

P.S. Did you know a Johnny O'Brien that used to fly FF in New Zealand? He
moved to Utah from New Zealand when I was a teenager in the late 50's and
60's. He was a nice guy and still lives in Utah and is a member of the
local club there.

Timing at the W.C.

Roger:

My experience timing all 3 days at the W.C. was far different than that
of Frank Mananno. I was indeed very apprehensive about timing the F1C
motor runs. My partner that day was John Pratt. We were surprised that
most of the flyers had motor runs of 4.6 or 4.7 seconds. We had not one
over-run, and during the entire day we had only one run of 4.9 seconds.
So I would say that F1C was the easiest event to time. On F1A day, there
was one flight that just missed a max due to dropping behind the low
ridge to the SE. But the competitor did not complain when he saw that
both of us timing him had him short by the same amount. It turned out
that the gliders were the most tiring to time due to the nature of that
event---the sometimes long tow times. (One contestant took just over 30
minutes to find the air he wanted, and even then he barely made it.) It
was a great experience. I would not hesitate one second to do it again.

Roger,
Glad to inform you and your readers that Eugene is doing well. He was =
facing surgery immediately after returning to the Ukraine for his old =
snake bite injury. Just received an e-mail from him and he says he is =
okay now and hopes to make it to the MM 2002.

The attached items should be of interest to EN readers:

The updated 2001 National Cup scores attached, including USFFC results, show
the leaders to be closely bunched in all of the Cup races. The final
contests of the year will likely decide the Cup winners. Good luck to all.

A new Nostalgia Category, Nostalgia Rubber has been approved for 2002 by the
NFFS Directors. CDs please take note. The Category consists of two Events,
1) Nostalgia Rubber for non-Wakefield designs, and 2) Nostalgia Wakefield.
Nostalgia Rubber Category designs will be authenticated at contests by the
entrants. No processing of models will be involved except at the CDs
discretion for the usual safety aspects required by AMA (snuffer tubes,
etc). See the attached Nostalgia Rubber Rules for details.

The Nostalgia Rubber Category will have a separate Cup in the 2002 National
Cup Competition.
