Reply to Schrodter - Your suggestion, as well as similar suggestions, have
been discussed at length in prior Team Selection Committee Meetings. One of
the main hurdles to cross was the financing of the program and teams,
notwithstanding having "15-18" contestants trying to make the team due to
the limitations inposed by travel and/or other strict requirements.
Financing can be lightly tossed off verbally until it comes down to someone
to raise the money to finance the program and to send the team. Then
everyone does the "head in the sand" routine - "let him raise the money
cauze I can't". It won't work, so get off it.

The US FAI Team Selection process

The concensus shortcoming for our Team Finals is that it rewards consistency
and not necessarily the ability to make a long flight. For example, if there
are only three "clean" fliers after the seven rounds, then no one has
demonstrated the ability to make more than 3.5 minutes (for F1B). If, at the
World Champs, there are 17 fliers in the flyoff, this kind of capability will
guarantee you at least 15th, 16th and 17th places!

One obvious solution is to reach down into the "unclean" fliers and hold a
flyoff. There are various possibilities on how to do this: Simply take the
top ten fliers? Take the top ten fliers who have dropped only one round or
less? Maybe the top six fliers? The goal is to get enough of the top fliers
(that is, the most consistent fliers) into the flyoffs that the flyoffs will
make it into or past the 7 minute round.

Roger,
Here we go again. People that don't fly F.A.I. on a regular basis trying
to tell the FAI planners how we should run our team selection program.
It is expensive enough with the price of quality equipment and rubber to
compete for a place on the team with our current program. We don't need
to add expensive travel all over the country as a prerequisite. No, I
haven't made the team, but I have flown in all of the team programs
since 1974 at Taft. I have been involved in both kinds of selection
programs. The one we have now is just fine.

Roger, you may have seen request from Dave Ackery for someone to take over the
running of the FFoNZ Trophy events he set up and provided magnificent trophies
for. My dear Moira. a very good glider flier, has offered to take over.
The FF Trophy will be run basically like the America's Cup (No Roger, not like
the sailing one where England ruled the waves and America waived the rules)
over the best of three.

[Actually Linc over here we think the F[f]onz is some kind of TV folk
hero [?], who probably was around when I first met you.]

Hi Roger

On the subject of FAI team selection, it seems to me that using the
Americas Cup results for the past year and a half to pick the entrants to
the team selection finals would meet most of the requirements that we have
been discussing. We could select the top twenty flyers in A B and C to
attend the finals. Then at the finals we could increase the max of the
early round to six or seven minutes to reward pure aircraft performance
more strongly since the contestants have already demonstrated the ability to
fly well in mid day rounds. This approach would also eliminate the timer
problem. Sure you will have to travel some and fly well not just accumulate
time but that is exactly what is required to do well in the World
Championships .
