A Zeri

Hi Roger, nice to read you all again, and all the best for '99 !!!
Just a quick comment on the recent flyoff idea of Rex Hinson.
When I hear or read english from native speakers I always pay attention,
because there can be always some particular expression or meaning to learn.
In the letter mentioned above I learned something new for me (I beg your
pardon, but english is not my native language): I learned that giving
"equal chance" to reach the flyoff to all the flyer in an F1B contest means
to bring almost all of them to the flyoff (apart the odd funny boy who still
manage to miss a round).
In my simple mind "equal chance" did mean that everybody has the same chance,
competing according to the same rules, using the same amount of rubber,
and so on.
I quite miss the point and the meaning of the sentence "We surely don't want
to go back to the time when only five or six modelers win all of the time",
it could still be my limited knowledge of english, but I think I still remem-
ber that time, when the flyers flying more consistent and longer flights
were often on top of the list, apart that it still happens exactly like this.
I think that we go through the "annoying formality" of putting together a
string of 7 flights (hopefully 7 maxes) to gain the honour to be in the final
flyoff, if any is necessary.
I even find more rewarding to fly in a contest were I can still win even if
I miss a max by a few seconds, in place of being automatically 33rd or so,
that was possible when the max still had a value, not being the sinecure it
is today.
And now about the substance of the suggestion: I think that Roger already
put the finger on the real problem: you need a special model, and, I add, it
will be really a special model, if it has to fly on 25 grams of rubber, it
will really cut the legs to many flyers.
Just a little last tought: these ideas, blossoming here and there every now and
then, help to see things from different angles, it's called,I think, brainstor-
ming, it helps to apply "lateral thinking" (I've been reminded about the impor-
tance of this quite recently on this newsletter by a well known flyer), BUT
I always ask myself if the proponents have taken the trouble to try what they
suggest, sometimes it would help to add some hard data to the words, making
more impact on the reader and helping to clarify (even to oneself) the many
facets of a problem.
With that, happy thermals and a '99 full of satisfactions to all of you.

What were you doing at 4 am
===========================

Last weekend at the Desert Challenge, Doug Joyce was having a heavy
technical discussion with Bill Bogart. Doug has solved some vibration
problems with his F1C engine and made some prop changes that have given him
an almost embarrassing increase in power. He was discussing with Bill
potential trim changes. Doug goes home for a good night's sleep.

He comes back next morning and goes over to Bill Bogart and say " You know
Bill I've figure out what I'm going to do. I was working on it until 4 am".
Doug had been turning the problem over in his mind. A short time later
Doug's, daughter Kate arrives and goes over to see Brian Van Nest who she
had been flying with the previous day. She says. "you know that problem I
was having with my Nordic , I thought about it until 4am , and this is what
I will do ..". So I had to look over to Doug's wife Marion and ask what she
was thinking about at 4 am . Marion was asleep. I guess she's the only
normal one in that house hold. Doug and Kate are like the rest of us.

The contest was flown when the fog allowed. Started at 1 PM Saturday in
hopes of finishing Sunday morning. Junior events could be flown either or
both days. Sunday was a washout with fog not allowing sufficient
visibility for the contest.

However, the fire Saturday evening was set by the firemaster, Peter Allnutt
and plenty of wood was brought. The fire was of such a size that the
nearest anyone could reasonably feel not being burnt was 6-8 feet from the
edge. Much merriment and sharing of food and drink was the order of the
evening and all surely slept well.

Please take note of the slight change in the name of the contest. Ed was
the one who started it.
