How was the ANTONOV CUP?

Dear Roger,
It had been long tine since I wrote last. I found the result of
ANTONOV cup result on your newsletter recently. I also found your name
on F1B result. According to the result, all 3 competition 1st round
time was 180 sec. Are their any special reason for that irregular
contest? How was weather? Please tell me more detail how was contest
going. By the way, Evgeny Verbitsuky was quite bad on this contest.
Did he fly redactor model this competition? I would like to know more
especially F1C event.
[
Well I had a good time at the Antonov - execpt on the flying field !
The first day was F1B and F1C. It was windy so they made the
first round 180. It was not really very windy and quite flyable.
I think that Verbitsky flew the geared model. He now has 2 models.
I think that the second had 3.6:1 gears. The first 3 in F1C
are the Ukranian team for Israel. Verbitsky stopped flying when
he had some trouble as it was quite a long chase. The models
were still landing on the air field but at the far end.
The F1C excitement was provided by Roy Summersby of Australia
who was trimming a new model in the far from ideal conditions.
Roy collected the 'Veterans' award - note to the organizers -
call it Seniors or even better Masters. Roy did not break it
and went off happy to fly it at Orel, Russia this weekend.
In the evening they flew the f1B flyoff and the wind dropped significantly
and changed direction. The winner Stephancouk, was the first to fly and
definitely got the best air. They were going for 7 minutes. All the
models were probably capable of over 6 minutes in still air.
Dead air was probably a good description as they got negative help.
While there was no signs on the thermistors etc it was getting worse
throughout the whole 10 minute flyoff window.
We hoped that the still evening would be a foretaste for F1A day.
However it was not to be. It was more windy and many flyers
did not even circle. In addition the direction changed and
took the models to a more overgrown area. I saw Peter Allnutt
borrow a coupe motor from Chris Murphy [or should I say
Kris Murfy - Cyrillic ?!] and make a cataput to shoot something
into the tree to get the model down.
Yes to be expected the weather calmed down and was not too bad
by prize giving time.
So while the weather was not perfect, and did the worst I ever have
it was a good event, a pity there were not more visitors. We did
enjoy our stay in Kiev and appreciate evryone's hospitality. Hope
that we can get back soon.]

Not Knots Again !

Roger,
I am sure there may be a couple of smiles amongst your readers
to see this article, however , this is my threepence worth.
When I first started flying Indoor some 3 or 4 years ,no decades
back, under the tutelage of a good local, Glen Conner, I was having
problems with stopping the knot from slipping undone. That appeared
to me, to be most unusual, as the rubber for Wakefields :-) never ever
seemed to slip undone, perhaps I was not winding it tight enough ( Back
to the story) and I asked Glen what he did to stop this phenomen from
occurring.
" Simple, just do one thumb knot, lubed or unlubed, then stretch the
knot very tight a rub it up against a woollen jersey,pullover- preferably
your own, otherwise you could be sporting a black eye." OK wiseguy,s
so in Southern California you dont need jerseys.
Apparently the wool fibres attach themselves to the rubber and
when the rubber is allowed to retain its normal length they are
embedded into the knot and stop the slipping. Magic! it works.
Up until the advent of Tan 2, I used a knot for Wakefields :-) :-) which
was based on the thumb knot , with an overhand knot done on top which
worked excellently until T2. There is no doubt my arms are becoming
stronger as once T2 became the norm I was having the knots slipping
much to my annoyance.
To overcome this I now slip a strand of my wife Betty,s knitting wool (
dont tell her) into the knot and "Eureka" it breaks elsewhere.
What I am now worrying about is if Clapp produces a "Grandson of
Tan" , then I will really be in trouble.
Of course the best part of this whole deal is that now I dont have to
package the motors in one bag for one batch, as I can now color code
each batch with the dyed wool!!
Finally, if the rubber is somewhat tender, I would imagine that Baby
knitting wool would do the job.
John M.
[ I used to just lick the rubber and tie a knot. .. until the July 97
rubber came. This rubber was mechanically very fragile and would
often break at the knot. So I needed to lube the knot to stop this.
When I did this the rubber come undone .. so at that time the Malkins
were staying at house, so when Betty was not looking I tried a bit
wool [aka yarn] in the knot. It was baby's wool! and it worked.
I've used that ever since]
