Hi to all...I sent my son John out to California for the Maxmen contest to
fly with the big boys with a new to him model that we purchased from
Damjan Zulic (you know, the guy that won the whole deal?). With the help of
the Parkers (thank you all for treating him so well), Ben (I'll pick him up
at the airport) Coussins, and our best buddies, the Gunders, John was able
to get to the field and enjoy 5 days of F1C flying.
John has never flown a model with a hard tank and got quite an eduction. He
never quite got the hang of it and had a few spectacular engine stoppages
(they don't recover when it stops one second up) to make it known that he was
on the field. But he got to meet many wonderful people and he found that he
had lots of friends. When John returned he told me I owe Randy Secor about a
gallon of CA!! Plus, he learned the cigarette technique for rapidly curing
Hot Stuff fron Don Chesson. Plus, I guess he had the oppurtunity to catch an
F1C model as it was diving to earth. All valuable lessons.
He got to talk with many folks from around the world, from the nice
Englishmen and an FAI hero, Eugene Verbitsky. I understand that Eugene
introduced himself to John and made his day. Plus, the acknowledgment at the
banquet was pretty cool for him. So, thanks to all that helped him out. I
promise that next year I will be there and we will be much better prepared.
5 second engine runs in F1J....I have to think that many models will need
a small amount of change in trim for that run. However, with our stuff, I
know that we have just cut the run and had no trimming needed. But then
everyone's stuff is different. I like the class (dah....) and sorta hate to
see it change. We all have dropped the 2 minute flight, but it has gotten
rarer as the performance has gotten to the point that it is. I noticed that
there seemed to be a smaller contingency of J flyers. I know that Gutai and
Haught weren't there, but is the class diminishing?
So, thanks again to all mine and John's friends and looking forward to
seeing you in the future!

The last time I got cut off I googled on SEN and SCAT and was exposed to
some very "informative" stuff. My hand got stuck on my mouse for hours!

I realize that I am only a member of a second rate ff club "sierra eagles"
But I think changing the motor run arbitrarily at a contest in advance is
The reason for giving contest directors the right to reduce maxes at a
contest should be reserved for weather or field conditions
Not because you feel that the event needs "fixing".
Did you get a real concensus from actual power fliers or did you just make
up your mind and then try to justify the decision?
As a current power flier I did give you my opinion and you didn't care to
hear it jim.
I shudder to think of the outcry if I decided at a contest that f1h models
needed a shorter towline!
We wouldn't need email to hear the complaints.
I think that this is one great way to kill an event so if that was your
intent great Idea
Batteries for Electronic Timers
I've noticed people buying electronic timers with more servos but
not necessarily upgrading the size of the batteries. There's no such thing
as a free lunch! you need more battery to drive those servos. What is just as
as the batteries capacity is its ability to deliver the current to drive
the additional number of servos at the same time. In the Magic timers
we actually stagger the sending of the pulses to the servos but they are
only a very short time appart. Peaople are finding the NiMH batteries
attractive because you get more capacity for the weight when compared with
NIcads - but these batteries have higher internal resistance so cannot
deliver the same current. People with 3 servo timerss should use a
at least a 300 ma batterey if they run NiMH . The other chemisyties
that are popular Nicad and LiPoly both can deliver higher current.
Tests have shown that digital servos are harder on batteries than analog.
So be careful if you use them.

Special Mini Event Rules:
There will be a Champagne flight timed to the ground
for the first round of the Mini's Sunday
morning. The max time indicated above will be used
for the 1st round. The mini's will then be flown
to include all five rounds plus fly off rounds till
3p.m. The ties that may still exist will be settled
by the Champagne times flown in the 1st round. F1J
will be flown with 5 second
engine runs for all rounds and a 3 minute max for
rounds 2 thru 5.
