2006 Fall AmCup Report.
=======================
Jim Parker

Endless October II did end and has resulted in some interesting
Americas Cup year end races. Only five more AmCup contest
left to be flown.

In F1A, Rene limburger has a slim lead with Barron, McKeever
(the 2006 winner), Tzvetov and yours truly within a single win
to take the lead.

Bob Biedron, 2 sec short in the last round of the finals to
force a flyoff, took the AmCup F1B lead with his Sierra Cup win.
Blake Jensen had the lead for a week by winning the Livotto’s
and can take back the lead with a 26 point win. Eddie
Vanlangingham and Dick Wood would likely need two bonus point
wins to claim the lead.

In F1C, Don Chession's lead held up during October. Ed Carroll
is in 5th and Norm Potti is in 6th with only 3 scores
counting. Henery Spence, 2nd, and Andri Kirlenko would need a
win with bonus points to claim the lead.

The father son team of Anthony (Jr WC silver medalist) and Rocco
Ferrario are in 1st and 2nd in F1P. Last year winner, Cody Secor
(JrWC Gold medalist) is making his travel plans. He needs a
non-Lost Hills win to take the lead and could further extend the
lead with points from yet another site. Don’t forget Reid
Simpson and Brian Pacelli ( Jr WC Team Gold). This year we will
be awarding for the first time the F1P perpetual trophy thanks
to the donation from Jim Bradley and the fine craftsmanship of
Bob VanNest who made the base.

The points in F1G have been spread thin. Eddie Vanlandingham
helped himself 3 points with his 2nd place at Livotto’s. Paul
Crowley needs a regular 25 point win to take the lead. Tom
Ieorger needs a 3 bonus point win. Jerry Murphy could be the
sleeper in 7th with only 3 scores counted.

F1H the October contest wins were spread out and eluded the
top place flyers and so making my lead look more difficult to
overcome. Both Bob Shifleet in 2nd place and Mike in 3rd
would need two bonus point wins to take the lead but I’m not
counting my chickens yet.

Yet again, the points are spread in F1J with Jean Pailet in the
lead. Steve Spence and Austin Gunder have a clear shot to take
the lead. Can Austin sneak away from Standford? Steve has a
local Texas contest. Faust Parker is recouping with a new knee
but Gil Morris could come out of the pack to win as could Henry
Spence and Randy Archer. This one is anybody's call.

F1Q is being tracked as a provisional event. Six contests have
been flown with 13 total entries and 8 individual flyers. Vic
Nippert is in the lead.

Likewise, F1E is being tracked as a provisional event. Four
contests have been flown with 23 total entries and 9 individual
flyers. Peter Brock is in the lead.

Please email corrections. If the mistake is my input error, I
simple make the correction. If the mistake is with the reported
scores, we need to get the CD involved to verify the correction.

Roger,
All fair points!
Picking the best team strikes me as a great goal.
Wouldn't picking the best team be better served by a system that
encourages more, rather than fewer, competitors. Maybe from,
ahem, a broader demographic?
Would that produce a better quality of competition. And more competiton by
definition, produce a superior team?
Rather than say negate competitors with the calendar rather than by failure to
max?

Hey guys,
Dan Berry will be running a Catapult Glider event, flown in rounds at
the Autumn Cup.
It will be flown on Sunday along with the mini events.
To enter, see Dan at the contest. He will be doing all the officiating,
recording, etc. The entry is $1.00.
Any questions as to how he will run the event can be addressed to Dan,
Berry, Daniel E-mail Address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
This event will not count towards Texas Cup points for this competition
season. Maybe next year if it's a well participated event.
Dig your birds out, bring em, and enjoy some grins.
See you at Seguin

Skyscraper's Autumn Contest
Author: Aram Schlosberg CD
Although this was not an American Cup contest, and was
held at the end of the flying season, 33 fliers entered.
The weather on Saturday was very windy, and only F1H
and HLG fliers decided to brave it. We flew from the western
entrance to the field, to gain as much depth as possible.
Al Vollmer waited patiently for hours in the wind, netting
the big ones.
Sunday's forecast was for a calm morning and the weather
proved to be extraordinary - cool, very calm with a cloud cover
and occasional gentle thermals but no downdrafts! We flew
from the southern part of the field with its wide grass strips
all day.
Ron Felix was talked into flying Dawn Unlimited and handily
won by flying his Wakefield with a so-so motor.
The calm was abruptly terminated short at 1:15 PM, with a
powerful mini-front from the south with 20+ mph gusts. Strong
downdrafts returned. Unfortunately for Andrew, his 6th F1A
round was tossed into a strong eddy. Flying was suspended
for 15 minutes at which point winds dropped to about 10-2 MPH
effecting the 7th F1A round and the F1G 3-way flyoff.
Of note are the dominance of juniors in F1A and P-30 as
well as Rich Ivers' F1Q performance. His wing was damaged
when the strong wind picked up from the south.
Awards were certificates with a reproduced woodcut by
Ross Jahnke depicting a flier searching of a model in a
corn field. Lisa Pacelli ably manned the scoring table on
Sunday.

Mike on the Finals

Hello;
Well, isn't it time to make the Finals more interesting and less of a
one shot hope that everything works out fine.
Good weather, etc. The problem, as always is bad weather and many people
who work very hard and do not have a good experience, it leaves a bad
taste in their mouths. Then we end up losing some of our best and
most promising flyers. And we cannot afford to lose any, as we are
all dinosaurs!
Examples of this are numerous; Take the best F1C flyer in the late
60's and early 70's was John Warren, who won practically every single
contest for 6 or 7 years. He was easily the best F1c flyer in this
country and maybe the world. Went to 3 Finals, bad weather, did
not make the team and moved on. Then there was Earl Thompson,
same scenario and more recent John Sessiums. And there are many more!
What's disheartening is if you work hard do everything right
and do not achieve your goal, and then your prospect is that
you have to wait another 2 years to even try again! Too big of a
downside on a one shot contest.
If you have multi events spread out over say a year and a
half, there is always the next event to focus on. A much
softer let down if you will! So what if the weather was bad,
your model went out of sight, your timer failed! There is
another contest in a couple months to get ready for.
Downside not so bad!!
I proposed this about 10 years ago, and the flyers
probably would have passed it, but it did not get through
committee to get voted on by the flyers by one vote. It is
actually very simple since almost all the flyers in the program
go to all or most of these contests anyway. I will scale the
program down to say 6 or 7 contests and you count point totals
of 3 or 4. Let the flyers vote which. Top 3-point totals are the
team. It could go something like this for this cycle. Ideally
it would start after the WC, but for this cycle we can do
something like this.
1) 2007 MaxMen
2) 2007 Big Al's
3) 2007 Texas Spring Cup
4) 2007 Muncie FAI Cup- Sorry about name, not sure!
5) 2007 Nats- Muncie
6) 2007 Lovoto Cup
7) 2007 Sierra Cup
8) 2008 Max Men
Now, I must point out that this cycle is somewhat different
and we can add more contests due to the starting time of the
upcoming W.C. year. But imagine if the above dates were 2006
to 2007 and the final contest to pick team was the next MaxMen.
Ideally this process would start after the W.C., but to keep
people interested we can start this cycle next year and have
many contests and count 6 or so. You do not have to fly in
all the contests, but most people do fly in all the West coast
contests. So we can repeat the cycle and end up with the
2009 Maxmen as the final event.
This allows people to fly into a contest, fly the event and
fly back home. They do not need to take the vacation week
off to fly the finals. You can fly the events you like and
don't the others.
The contests have to be set up with poles, so the flyers time
one fly one. This relieves the organizers of the timer burden.
The contests must have a banquet or on field barbecue. We are
a group of people with a common interest, a fraternity of
model flyers, free flight dinosaurs, and it would be nice
to be able to interact with each other on a more regular
basis. At the west coast contests bikes can be shared with
flyers on each pole, there should be plenty if done with a
help attitude! The Texas and Muncie events, the organizers
will have to line up chase bikes to help each pole. If this
can be achieved the flyers can arrive at these contests
and plan on having a well run pleasant experience, which
will make them want to come back. One must remember there
are not many of us left, so make the events a great
experience and help us keep our small social group together.
It won't be any fun flying by yourself!
Now, this should create a lot of discussion among the
modelers and I am sure a consensus can be worked out that
will address everyone concerns. Also, if you add say $10.00
to each events entry fee plus the regular $100.00 or what
ever the finals fee is currently, we should be able to
generate more money.
Next, since the weather has been a problem at Lost Hills
as it is in the wind belt as I said when we first started
there, but because of the drought years and perfect weather
contest after contest, nobody listened. If you check
back over the last 10 years or so, you will find that there
have been few perfect weather contests. This has
seriously hurt the sport and participation. Hell, the
weather killed the US Free Flight champs! One thing about
Taft, you knew the contest weather was guaranteed
to be good! Therefore the travel distance was not
an issue and it was a good bet to have flyable weather.
Nothing worst than traveling across country and
have grappy weather. No FUN!!
Well, this can be fixed!! There is a site about 10 miles
up the road from Lost Hills that provides all the wind
protection of Taft! Go to Blackwell corners, turn south on 33
and go about 3 to 4 miles and turn right on the dirt
road and drive in towards the mountains. You have to
go in about 3 to 5 miles to get close to the mountains there
and you are wind protected from the northwesterly flow
that comes thru the slot. The property is there for
the asking as it is owned by oil companies and there
is no oil or gas on it. Also, no water rights.
I test flew there years ago when Lost Hills was
being blown out and when I finished testing thought
the wind had died down and headed back to Lost
Hills only to find out that the wind was till howling.
So no one misunderstands the wind still blows
over the top of the mountains but the models don't
see it until the are about 400 to 600 feet, must
like Taft! It also has good protection from
southerly flows. The next time you are at Lost Hills
and getting blow out, like at the Finals, take
a drive and you will be surprised!
Now, if we sell Lost Hills to Holliway who needs
our gypsum, we can offer the money back to Mr. John Creen,
who Cuffmac treated so disrespectfully. He probably
won't take it, but the offer and an apology should
be made. He will probably say buy the new land with
it and build a road that will need to be limed and
or oiled so we can get out when it rains. It will
be a long dirt road, but no more blowouts. It also
opens up Button Willow and Taft as motel and banquet
venues as it is about the same distance from all
3 towns. Like I said above, the next time you
are at Lost Hills and kicking rocks from the norwesterly
coming thru the slot take a drive and check
it out for yourself.
Hopefully, you the flyers will pull together
and form a consensus to make the rest of our
modeling years the best ever and the events the
promising experiences we all hope and wish they
could be.
