Hardy was the force behind the early years of the NFFS. Both his personality and his financial support gave the Society the jump start it needed. The "Bird" design came from his studio "Design Origins." He was a friend and a challenge to me. I'd always enjoy his stimulating phone calls at all hours of the day or night. One of a kind.

I was very sad to hear that Hardy passed away. Many of you knew him much
better and longer than I, but we did spend a good bit of time together at
contests in the 1990's when Don Chesson was building and flying Hardy's
Koko "V" wing F1C. All I can think to do to honor his memory is relate a
story about Hardy and how he gave me the nickname Banjo at a contest in
Eloy, AZ around 1992.
I had damaged my F1B in an early round and was helping Don and Hardy chase
and generally hanging out. I don't remember which round it was, but Hardy
broke the DT line on the model he was flying. If you knew Hardy's models,
you understand why a broken DT line was a major issue, and he decided the
best solution was to get a new rig (which was comprised of a front harness,
and full set of VIT lines, and the "framus" which fit into the rear of the
tail boom. The problem was that the rig was back at the hotel. Don and I
tried to suggest other solutions given the timeframe, but Hardy chose to
leave for the hotel, leaving Don and I with the model.
I started thinking about the problem and decided to use two of the VIT
lines from my F1B to rig up a DT line on Hardy's model. Again, Hardy's
designs were both innovated and complicated, so it was impossible to run
the new line along the path of the old one, which was entirely inside the
fuselage, all the way to the timer. Instead Don and I ran the line
externally. Due to the location of the timer in the fuselage, it was also
impossible to hook an external line to the DT arm of the timer. But there
was a 1/4" hole in the side of the tail-boom that was just the right size
for a piece of fuse. So we rigged up a hook for a #8 rubber band inserted a
fuse and waited for Hardy to return.
When he got back we showed him our work and he studied it in silence for a
few minutes then he looked at me and said, "you strung it like a banjo!".
He flew the model before the end of the round and it flew fine.
Unfortunately he short-fused and didn't max. That evening and for several
years after he and Don referred to me as Banjo.
In all seriousness, I learned a tremendous amount from Hardy in the time we
spent together. He would joke, but when it came to design or trim, he was
serious, honest, and helpful. The will be no other like Brokenspar. I
deeply miss him.

classes F1ABC will be held in Zrenjanin (Serbia). On Friday/Saturday a world
cup competition will be flown. E/C for F1A will be on 16. Aug., F1B on 17.
Aug. and F1C on 18. Aug.

2 min. max., weather permitting. The first round will have a ½ hour launch window beginning at 8:00 a.m. Unlimited flight, 2 min. max. If you max out, the first round time over 2 minutes will be counted.
· $20.00 for Large FAI events, $10.00 for Small.
· Junior flat entry fee of $3.00 includes one or all events.
· $25.00 max covers all events.
· Valid AMA License required.
· Trophies awarded to third in F1B and F1G. All other events, glassware for first and certificates for second and third place. Scored as all separate events for America’s Cup points.
· F1P, F1J and F1H are combined for awards.
· All official flights must be made between 8:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 8:00 a.m.– 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. FAI flyoffs will start as soon as practicable. All persons in the flyoff MUST provide timers for pool in order to fly.
· Scores must be posted after each flight. Flights not posted will be voided.
· F1C flyers are to provide their own fuel.
· FAI Events run per CIAM and America’s Cup Rules.
· Max flights may be adjusted so as to minimize off-site landings.
