USA FAI FF Jr Team Selection Standings
This the first 2018 Jr Team Selection Standing report. The Jr team selection program can be found on the NFFS web site, < https://freeflight.org/competition/juniors/>. The core of the selection process is counting the best 3 Am Cup contests from Jan 1, 2017 thru the 2018 Max Men contest. The scores are converted to points based on the junior’s percentage of their regular round score to the winning regular round score, i.e. if a Jr maxes out the regular rounds then they get 100 points. Joel Yori and Cade Fedor are 2 of the 2016 Jr team returning with plans to compete at the Jr World Champions in Pazardzik Bulgaria the summer of 2018. The 2016 team had only 6 members and so three flew 2 events. We would greatly prefer to send a full 9 member team. There are experienced flyers throughout the country ready to help young flyers who are serious in competing for a Jr Team spot. Likewise the USA FAI FF community have competitive models for serious young flyers to be loaned, given, or sold at very reasonable cost. There are still 20 Am Cup contests left so there is plenty of time to enter (no cost) and compete for a Jr Team position.

F1G Eurochallenge
From: Alessandro Manoni
Thanks for mentioning the F1G Euro Challenge, I am pleased to give some information about it :
The original idea was not really mine. A similar league was initiated around 1995 by “Vol Libre” publication and its editor Andre Schandel ; if I am not wrong only a couple of seasons were run. By that time number of events and competitors were not so many.
In 2006, due to the increased interest for F1G class it was decided to propose it again by AGO Torino Club (Italy), with the support if Italian Free Flight Federation. So the Euro Challenge 2006/2007 started and is still alive today with interest spread in different countries.
Actually my initial (probably too optimistic…) idea was of a league in which the organizer shifts every season, that to enforce the concept of such an acknowledgment among enthusiasts, rather than an official event, and so to share the effort, but in the end I am still going on with some help from Michel Picol. To be correct there was a thought to merge it with F1H E.C., but there is a small misalignment in season definition that may create some conflicts even if not impossible to solve.
The peculiarity is that the reference season is from October to September instead of the calendar year. That was applied by the time of “Vol Libre” edition and comes from the assumption (maybe a bit out of date nowadays) that traditionally F1G “coupe d’hiver” is a winter class. But that allows me to give the prize of each last season by the time of the F1G contest organized here in Torino. The drawback is that normally at the end of summer of one year you don’t know exactly what will be the contests of the next year. So typically I start with a list, then accountable events are added during the season, maybe an inaccuracy but nobody claimed for that so far…..
Rules for scoring are similar to F1S ones already published, see below.
Regards to all.
Alessandro Manoni
For the final scoring the best FIVE results are taken into account, but in any case one competitor can count a maximum of THREE contests per country.
Scoring system :
For each considered event, a score is assigned basing on the competitor position and the number of participants such as follows :
Number of participants is divided by two, if the total is odd is rounded by excess.
That value represent the points assigned to the first placed.
One point less is assigned time by time to the others up to two points.
One point is then given to all the other competitors who flown at least one round.
If participants are 25 or more the maximum score given start from 13 to the first regardless the total number of competitors.
Examples :
With 11 participants, 6 points are given to the first, 5 to the second, 4 to the third, 3 to the fourth, 2 to the fifth, 1 to all the others.
With 30 participants, 13 points are given to the first, 12 to the second..........2 to the 12th and 1 to all the others.
In case of contests run in the "French" way and so with the registration of two models per participant, only the best one classified will be counted.

On Spot Checking
1_What is the penalty for a spot check [SC] violation?
Surprisingly, no explicit penalty for a SC violation is specified by the rules. (Annex 2 – a guide for the organizers of FAI contests in outdoor FF classes.) If one of the top four fliers fails a SC their rank is impacted but not explicitly specified. Based on the custom of annulling the flier’s time following a SC failure, there are two possibilities:
a. That specific round. If only the last flight is annulled, the flier would drop to the last position in that round.
b. Retroactivity. If the violating model was used in previous rounds, all those rounds would also be annulled. (This does not apply to B-motor because they are used once and not to tow lines that are not recorded.)
Under (a) one could argue that the flier was unaware of their model’s violation and that annulling their last flight is sufficient. In addition, in (a) the impact on a team position can be mitigated of the violation happened in the flyoffs.
2_Significant parameters.
A and B-models are defined with upper and lower area limits. However, who cares if someone is flying an under area model? Violations should only apply when they are in the flier’s advantage – over area models, underweight models plus overweight B-motors. So specifying lower class area limits in A and B is redundant.
3_SCing locations
SCing can entail considerable down time for a flier during a contest if the SC processing center is far from the flight line. And flight lines can be moved during a contest. A SC of a C model requires measuring its area and weight. But a SC for an A-model could be the model itself (weight and area) or the tow-line; for a B-model it could be the model itself – area and weight or only the motor. (The sporting code is not explicit on this issue.)
I’m presuming that one can SC B-motors and tow lines separately. So SCing of B-motors can be done at the flight line, as weighing them is not affected by wind. The same applies to tow line checks.
SCing of areas requires an enclosed SC facility to shield it from the wind. Ideally, each flight line should have a skeleton processing center (a tent, tables and chairs) to allow fast SCing during the contest. (Moving the measuring equipment between SC facilities can be done quickly.)
But post contest SCing of podium position can be done is a separate facility (as the rules specify). Also, this could happen in the dark after evening flyoffs. According to Tony Mathews Peter Allnutt used to say that the organizers of a WC should take the winning models into a locked room along with a case of beer and announce the winners after the beer is finished. Let the party begin.

Am Cup Standings, Sept. 2017
Just over half way through the Am Cup Season. Many flyers have fulfilled the 3 different contest location requirements. Only the F1A leader, Jama, has more than 100 points which is generally needed to win the Am Cup so I'm looking forward to the rest of the season to be competitive.
