Lost Hills Update
We did a field inspection yesterday and the field is in great shape. There is a green fuzz on parts of the field that will become grass. We will see how much grows in the next couple of weeks. There are a few muddy patches but nothing that cannot be avoided – take note Malcolm Campbell.
BUT
There was a Tule (pronounced too lee) Fog on parts the I-5 driving up. This happens at this time of the year so allow extra time if you are driving in the early morning. Also remember if you are staying in the town of Lost Hills that it may be foggy there but there is always much less fog , generally none at the flying site so do not sit at the hotel thinking there will be no flying. Drive slowly and carefully to the field.
And as always be careful when driving on the field because there will be soft places and small sink holes.
Finally respect our neighbors in particular the orchard and Holloway gypsum. If you model goes near the trees never drive between the trees and get help from an organizer if you model lands in a tree. Failure to do this will lead to expulsion from the field. More information will be published on this subject.
The 2017 FAI Southwest Regionals Model Airplane Championships
The weather for the SWR was not our usual blue skies Arizona weather which kept some of the regular flyers away from Eloy. On Saturday, Jan. 14, it had rained the night before but in the morning the ground was only slightly sticky, the temperature was 52deg and the wind at 5mph out of the SSW. Then the wind became calmer and variable to become stronger again in the afternoon when the temperature was at 63deg. For the fly-offs the wind was out of the ENE at 8-10mph. Sunday morning there was again a bit of rain which delayed the start until 10am with a strong wind from WSW at 9mph and temperatures around 55deg. Soon the wind became continuously stronger to 11 to 14mph, with lulls still above 10mph.
We had 31 sportsmen flying the 8 FAI events. The contestants were from AZ, CA, CO, NV, OH, OR, TX and UT. We again had Mike Woodhouse flying in from the U.K. and Siegfried Limberger from Germany. Enes and Jasminka Pecenkovic flew for their home country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. We had 4 ladies flying FAI events, Julie Parker (F1Q, F1S), Geralyn Jones (F1G), Tiffaney O’Dell (F1G) and Jasminka Pecenkovic (F1A) – and we also had one FAI Junior, Jace Pivonka (F1B, F1G).
On Saturday F1Q was won by Jack Murphy with Mike Pykelny in 2nd and Allan Mecham in 3rd place. F1C/P had only 2 entries with Faust Parker (F1C) beating out Mike Fedor (F1P). F1A had 12 flying. After 5 rounds there were 7 maxed out. The first fly-off was for only 4 minutes because of the wind. The 2nd fly-off for a 6min max was won by Mike McKeever, with Rene Limberger in 2nd and Enes Pecenkovic in 3rd. F1B had 9 sportsmen flying, 4 were clean after 5 rounds. It took also 2 fly-off rounds to decide the winners. Walt Ghio was 1st, Jace Pivonka (Jr) was 2nd and Blake Jensen 3rd.
On Sunday we flew F1G, F1H, F1J and F1S in very windy conditions which kept a few entered contestants from making flights. Because of the wind increasing it was decided after round 3 to fly only one more round to satisfy the America’s Cup requirement of 4 rounds. Mike Richardson won the F1G Bear by dropping only 4 seconds, Don DeLoach was 2nd and Mike Pykelny came in 3rd. Jim Parker was the clear F1H Bear winner by getting 4 maxes, Ken Bauer was 2nd and Blake Jensen with 2 sad attempts in the windy 4th round was 3rd. The F1J Bear was won by Faust Parker with 4 maxes with Mike Fedor in 2nd place. In F1S, the small electric event, we still had 7 flying in the wind. Allen Mecham dropped a total of 2 seconds for third place. Jack Murphy and George Morris both maxed their 4 flights. The fly-off on Monday was won by Jack who received the new F1S Bear trophy, George came in 2nd with a 3 second shorter flight.
A big thank you to all participants and to Tom Gaylor, Hermann Andresen, Elmer Nelson and my wife Brigitte who all made this contest a memorable event.

Henry Cole's "The Fascination of Flight"
From: Fred Terzian
Roger, of interest to SEN subscribers is the announcement by the National
Free Flight Society that they have made available Hank Cole's extremely
interesting personal account of his seventy-plus years of free flight
aeromodelling. Readers will note that Henry was a very active participant
in all FAI free flight events and Team Selections into the early 21st
century. This past summer, Henry distributed a few spiral bound copies that
he printed and put together to some of his free flight friends. I suggested
to him that it would probably have worldwide interest, as noted in the text
below.

August 23rd, 2016 -- "The Fascination of Flight"
"We had the pleasure to have Hank Cole attend our monthly club meeting last
Thursday and he gave us a personal account of his 70-year plus involvement
with free flight. Prior to that, he sent selected friends copies of his 100
page personal account as titled above.
Hank as you already know is one of those living legends in free flight that
encompasses the golden years of the sport. For him to be providing this
historical account at this time is incredible (he just turned 95 last
Friday), and I mentioned that there would probably be tremendous interest
for many free flight enthusiasts around the world.
This was a personal endeavor on Hank's part, having typed it up on his
computer over the last few years, scanning all of his magazine articles and
personal photographs (both B&W and color), then printing the 20 plus copies
on a color ink jet printer.
He did not know how to proceed because major distribution and printing
costs are out of his league (he is not doing this for profit). I suggested
that maybe it could be an NFFS or SAM special project and publication.
Distributed an offered by NFFS or SAM. Again, this is not a source of
income for him, so any profits would be to the benefit of NFFS."
Editor’s Note – Hank Cole is one of the great names of free flight in the USA. His book is now available from NFFS publications as per the note from the NFFS President John Lorbiecki in an earlier SEN
