2015 AmCup Results Report

The last two contest of the 2015 AmCup season, Arizona Champs (Dec. 5-6) and the King Orange (Dec. 29-31),should have some flyers seeking to either protect their first place position or trying to take first place from the current leaders.
In F1A, while the 2014 winner,Jama Danier, is in first place with a good score of 107 points, I could, with a win in Eloy and K.O. take the lead or tie Jama and I’d have the tie breaker—assuming Jama does not do well at either of these contests. Historically, the Az Champs and K.O. have not had the needed bonus points for any of the other top placing flyers to overtake Jama.
Tony Mathews is holding onto the F1B lead but Blake Jensen’s Patterson win last weekend makes him a viable contender. Walt Ghio would need a win with one bonus to tie and he would have the tie breaker. Sevak Malkhasian would have 111 points with a 25 win and 106 points with a second place for the AmCup win,—Eloy? Rookie USA Team member Greg Simon would have 108 points for the lead with a 25 point win--- K.O.? Alex Andriukov has two 30 point contest so would have to win one and place second between the last two contests.
F1C is up for grabs. None of the flyers have 4 scores! That is they have not placed in the top 5 at three different fields. So who will be the one to travel for the win? If none do we will have a first. Ron McBurnett and Randy Secor will be tied through 2 tie breakers. The second half of rule 7 would then be used: “the scores from the five best contests would be multiplied by the total number of contestants in the 5 contests in the competitor’s event to determine the winner”. I’m betting on Matt Gewain will be at AZ Champs and I hope he flies F1C which could give him the AmCup win (assuming the other contenders are not there or at K.O.).
With a win in F1P, Cade Fedor(junior flyer) could snatch the win from Bob Hanford.
The one event all but locked upis F1G. Tiffaney O’Dell has a score of107 points. Mathematically, John Clap and Mike Richarson could overtake Tiff but that would require more bonus points at the last two contests than we have seen over the past several years.
Mike McKeever in F1H can be beaten by Brian VanNest with a 25 point win (Brian would win by tie breaker). Hey, if I’m going to go to the AZ Champs and the KO to win F1A, the same strategy works for me in F1H!
We say F1Js are mini F1Cs and likewise the score situation is F1J is the same as in F1C in that none of the flyers have 4 scores. So the winner could be the one who wants it bad enough to travel to one or both of the remaining contests. Faust Parker is currently in the lead.
We have a tie in F1Q between Matt Gawain and Jack Murphy with Jack currently having the tie breaker. Mike Pykelny and Dick Ivers would be in that mix with a 25 point win.
F1E—ditto the last 10 years—Peter Brocks has the only true lock in that there are no more F1E contests this year.

2016 USA Jr FF Team Selection Report.
No juniors have joined the program since the last report. As a reminder, the Jr Program runs through the end of the 2016 Max Mencontest. There are 8 more contests, 3 of which are select contest. This to say there is still time to enter the program. There is a possibility that there will be an open F1A spot and an open F1P spot should two of the currententrants decide not to pursue making the team. Should there be open spots after the close of the selection process, the Jr Team Selection Committee would consider having the more experienced team members fly two events but they would also consider filling those open spots with juniors that have flown only some of the JrTSP contests. So if a Jr and their family haveany interest at all, I suggest they register soon. See the NFFs website under “Competition/ Juniors” for the Jr Program which has the entry form (no entry fee).
Prilep, Masedonia (Aug. 1 – Aug. 6, 2016) looks to have awonder field and a sports camp for central lodging which would make for awonderful international experience for our Jr flyers. No detail information yeton the Jr World Champs but the Macedonia website provides much general informationand photos. http://www.prilepcup.info.
Four of the Jr flyers have the maximum of 300 points andmost of the rest have scores close to 300.

I was very interested to read Pieter de Boer's F1C rule proposals, which are clearly the result of much serious thought. Do I understand correctly that in proposal 2, category B models, which get 5 seconds run, are not what we currently call 'classic' F1C models (i.e. models without flaps or folding wings), but models with no incidence changes at all? This would of course mean no VIT or bunt. This is a very intriguing idea, is it what Pieter intends, or a translation glitch?

Editorial Explanation - TMI for most readers
Most SEN subscribers get SEN formatted in HTML format, some get it in a plain text format. Doug is in that latter category.
Pieter's F1C document was highly formatted with strikeouts and highlighting to make it easier to understand. These aids to easy comprehension were not present in Doug's version and without them may have given the opposite point of view.
So Doug cleaned it up so it could be read without needing the fancy formatting. Doug's version is below.

Last month you received my E-Mail concerning my F1C objections. Lots of reactions
where received, mostly supporting. I also got 1 or 2 funny ones.
As promised last month, I attached, the content of 4 Dutch proposals.
After all it is my inspiration to support F1C flying and keep it a sport for everybody
who has fun out of it.
Hope other countries will support these proposals or put in better ones to save the whole F1C community for the future.

Class F1C Model Aircraft with Piston Motors
3.3. CLASS F1C €“ MODEL AIRCRAFT WITH PISTON MOTORS
3.3.1.
Definition
Model aircraft in which the energy is provided by a piston type motor
and in which lift is generated by aerodynamic forces acting on surfaces
remaining fixed in flight, except for changes of camber or incidence. Models
with variable geometry or area must comply with the specifications when the
surfaces are in minimum and maximum extended mode.
3.3.2. Characteristics of
Model Aircraft with Piston Motor(s) F1C
Maximum swept volume of motor(s:) 2,5cm3
No exhaust extensions whatsoever are allowed to the exhaust opening(s) of the motor
Minimum total weight 300 g/cm3 swept volume of motor(s)
Minimum loading. 20g/dm2
Maximum duration of motor run: .5 seconds from release of model.
Rule B.3.1.a. of Section 4b does not apply to class F1C.
Fuel to a standard formula for glow plug and spark ignition motors
will be supplied by the organisers, and must be used for every official
flight. The composition shall be as follows: 80% methanol, 20% castor or synthetic oil.
Note: Fuel for compression ignition motors is not restricted.
Before each attempt for an official flight the fuel tank must be washed out with standard formula fuel.
F1C models may use radio control only for irreversible actions to
control dethermalisation of the model. This may include stopping the
motor if it is still running. Any malfunction or unintended operation
of these functions is entirely at the risk of the competitor.
Proposal 1.
This proposal is a: Rule change. Safety X Noise Other X Clarification X
Change the sentence €œFuel to a standard formula for glow plug and
spark ignition motors will be supplied by the organisers, and must be
used for every official flight.
The composition shall be as follows:
80% methanol, 20% oil.
Oil can be castor oil or synthetic oil.
There is a free choice for the competitor.
As described in
SC4 Vol ABR 15:B.5.6. Fuel
a) Fuel supplied by the organisers shall be mixed from top quality
material. Methanol shall be at least commercial grade without
additives. Castor oil, when used, shall be first pressing castor oil.
b) Standard Fuel
i) When a standard FAI fuel is specified, the fuel that the organizers shall supply for practice and for the
competition shall be of the same constituents, mixed in a single batch.
ii) Standard fuels which are used for competition flights shall be
part of the entry fee. Practice fuel supplied by the organiser to the
competitors shall be charged at cost.
iii) The standard FAI fuel for practice must be requested in advance. (at the time of entry).
c) Non-Standard Fuel
The organizers shall make available, at cost, up to 2.0 litres of fuel
per competitor for practice flying and for use in competitions. The
fuel, or constituents, must be requested in advance (at the time of
entry) and the organiser shall supply at least the following:
Methanol< /span>
Castor Oil
Nitromethane
Synthetic Oil
Ether
Kerosene
Jet-A1
When the definition of Standard FAI fuel is clear specified (80%
methanol, 20% oil) there are two possibilities:
80% methanol, 20% Castor oil.
80% methanol, 20% Synthetic oil.
Both types of specified fuels shall be supplied by the organisers and
mixed in separate single batches.
Lots of competitors spread over the continents are using Synthetic
oil. There are lots of well-known brands.
An extra mark on the (preliminary) entry form for F1C informs the
organiser about the competitor needs.
If we remember the enormous number of crashes on the WC in France 2013
mostly due to polluted Castor oil, we have to categorize this clarification as a safety one.

This proposal is a: Rule change X Safety X Noise Other X
Add sentences;
Distinguished are;
a) Models with variable geometry (changes of camber or incidence) grade to A
b) Fixed geometry models (fixed camber and fixed incidence) grade to B
Explanation;
To compensate the big performance difference between
categories A and B;
Maximum duration of motor run for category A 4 seconds from release of model.
Maximum duration of motor run for category B 5 seconds from release of model.
In this way new developments are not blocked, investments keep valued.
The competitor can make his own choice, to take an A or B model,
depending on circumstances.
Most important is to avoid that many members of the F1C community will
leave the sport; because they feel it is no fun anymore.

Add sentences;
Grade A models: Maximum duration of motor run: 4 seconds from
release of model.
Grade B models: Maximum duration of motor run 5 seconds from

Explanation;

Even as the timer is activated (put in starting position) the
competitor must be able to stop the motor and dethermalise the model.
Explanation;
Currently used electronic timers already have the possibility to be
activated by radio even if the starter button is not yet released.
Some timers may need a software update.
Nowadays most glider flyers use electronic timer including radio control to save their models and avoid dangerous situations.
Why should power models, which are more dangerous, not have at least the same possibilities?
