Hi Roger,
Marty S has nailed it as far as the 5 round rule change goes! It will be very interesting to see the impacts on the European FF champs next year with this rule.

As an addition comment re the 5 round impact, I have to ask how would you run a flyoff round fairly when the flight line could be almost as long as that in Croatia in 2009 (based on the F1A numbers in Mongolia after 5 rounds)?

With those sorts of numbers, the first flyoff, (at least), will become a bigger lottery than the general rounds, not what you want for what should be the grand final(s) of the competition!

Dame SCAT,

As one of those to voice their opinion at the time about the change from
7 to 5 rounds and as a timekeeper in Mongolia perhaps I can comment on
what Marty Schroedter said in SEN 2048.

First, the Mongolians had 80 timekeepers available and provided 3, not
2, per pole for each flyoff. Flyers including some from the US
volunteered to help, so taking the best practice of the Mongolians, yes
it is possible deliver adequate numbers of timekeepers for large
flyoffs.

Knowing the conditions at your venue can help reduce flyoff numbers. In
Mongolia the events started at 7am with easy maxes for the first two of
the 7 rounds. Starting later in a 5 flight event would reduce those in
the flyoff, so using a similar analysis to Marty's yields 39 in A, 39 in
B, and 21 in C, so less than if you flew the first 5 rounds only (which
obviously you wouldn't do).  So moving from 7 to 5 rounds need not
drastically increase flyoff numbers if managed sensibly.

Now if this sounds like I agree to the rule change then think again, I
believe it's bonkers.

This'll stir the pigeons

Marty Schroedter (SEN 2048) makes some valid points re changing F1A, B and C from 7 to 5 rounds.  However, increased times for R1 and R5 could contribute towards reducing the numbers in fly-offs.  Time will tell.

Now, being of Scottish origin, I tend to watch my expenditure and what I do know is you will get “less bang for your buck”.  At Fab Feb I look forward to flying 21 rounds in the week, and maybe make the occasional fly-off.  Up until recently, it cost us Aussies, as a couple, about $6,000 to make the trek over the Pacific Ocean.  That equates to $285 per competition flight.  But wait, the AUS dollar will be 70 cents by December, so the Fab Feb holiday will cost us $8,570 and the “per flight” cost soars to $408.

Now factor in 5 rounds per comp and we end up with 15 flights.  That means each flight costs us $571, double what it was when the dollar was on parity and we flew 7 rounds.  Just sayin’.  Ouch!
