It is with great sadness that we report the death of Martyn Cowley late on Friday caused by a massive heart attack. Martyn was a total aviation person, interested in all aspects of model and full size aviation. He had participated at the top level of World Championship Free Flight flying F1C for the UK in his youth and F1A for the USA more recently. In the period 1995 to 2005 Martyn was the man to beat in F1H competition. Besides his International Free Flight activities, he had flown control line combat back in the 60s and 70s , flew indoor Free Flight and R/.C with the Blacksheep and did some R/C soaring. Martyn can be seen front and center in the Brian Furutani video taken at the recent Ike Winter Classic flying his vintage Gollywock. http://www.flickr.com/photos/44670670@N02/5449789243/in/set-72157625927009389/
Martyn was the editor of the Aeromodeller magazine before moving to the USA to join Paul McCready in the early days of Aerovironment where he remained working until his death.
Martyn has tremendous enthusiasm for all things model aviation that was shown in how he took part in a broad spectrum of activities and supported others. One of his recent projects was mentoring the editor of the re-born Aeromodeller magazine.
From time to time he would write for SEN under the pseudonym of Biggles. His articles were much appreciated and showed a dry wit and love of the sport.
More to follow.
Some one asked me why there had nor been a SEN for a little while, that was because I did not have much materiel. We do need what you write , results, contest announcements etc. But apologies to Ken Bauer who sent the “Violence in F1A” piece with another a couple of weeks back but it got lost in the editorial machine.
Thanks to Wes and Zoli Magic is on the tube
I got a technology update from my grandson Wes and Magic Timers Customer Zoli from Hungary. Zoli wanted some info on a timer and I was surprised that even though English was not his mother tongue he wanted a video, that would be narrated in English rather than a document that might be easier for him to follow. I figured that Zoli must be under 21, because like my grandson when he wants to know how to do something he goes to YouTube, not to Google.
So this has lead to the production a some Magic Timers videos and the creation of a Magicmodelsport channel on Youtube.
The only problem is while our iPhones take great videos we now want to do some things better …
Walston Antenna that came all the way from Kansas- if you found one let us knw at SEN – just reply to this email

Large Awning......... Free for the taking at Lost Hills.
I have a large awning that is free for the taking. The awning can be set up as a 10' X 10' or a 10' X 20' Awning. All the parts are in good repair, nothing is missing.
The Awning consists of:
Aluminum frame poles and joining elbows
Practically new 10' X 10' silver colored polyester cover
Practically new 10' X 20' silver colored polyester cover
New sets of Rubber ties to attach the cover to the pole frame
Ropes for anchoring the awning
Stakes for anchoring the awning
Canvas zippered bag to house everything except the covers
I am not using the awning anymore, I hope some one, or some club, can use this awning. The awning is stored in my storage shed. I will be at Lost Hills this coming Tuesday May 21st through Sunday May 26, for the Big Al's contest, you can pick up the awning then.
Contact me at the field during this coming week, or call or email me prior to my flying to Lost Hills this coming Monday may 20th.

20 Second Rule
Duke SCAT,
My commentst o Frederic Aberlenc’s message are quite simple: if your model is unstable, poorly trimmed, has equipment problems or launched badly then by all means RCDT it but don't expect a re-flight. This has always been an anomaly and should be corrected as soon as possible. If this practically means that any flight of less than 20 seconds counts as a score then its fine by me.
Let's move on and get back to discussing the nuances of Energy Limiters rules and the like..............

PS Re: Ken Bauer's piece. Sometime I would have loved to be able to punch myself in the face after some of the launches I've made. Can he give any more advice on how I achieve that ?
Editors comment - It would seem to this observer that your visage is overly protected by that luxuriante beard your sport, maybe that's part of the problem ?
DT reply:
Perhaps M. Aberlenc was not aware that it has been possible to DT the other
FAI classes (just not F1A) and receive an attempt for years now. I have not
been aware of any major troubles resulting from this fact. I've always
found it odd that F1A was the only event that could not DT and receive an
attempt if the flight was less than 20 seconds. Why was it ok for the other
events and not F1A? Never made sense to me. For F1C I and some others might
argue that being able to DT before 20 seconds should be allowed for safety
reasons. No flyer should be put in a position where they must decide
whether or not they should push the button in order to prevent a crash that
might harm a person. The new LDA F1A models, can achieve frightening speeds
when a launch goes wrong. Such a missile could seriously hurt or possibly
kill someone. Until now a sportsman that pushed the button when flying F1A
was punished. This never made sense and now must be considered a safety
issue IMO. If M. Aberlenc wants to ban the rewarding of an attempt for an
early RDT then I suggest he look into the 20 second attempt rule for all
the classes. However, I would not support such a rule change due to the
safety issues I've mentioned. I support the new rule and feel that it
brings F1A inline with the other classes.

Great Story
Roger, I enjoyed Ken Bauer's story. Three cheers for candour, honesty and the resolve to keep at it !

STONEHENGE CUP 2013
The Stonehenge Cup was flown on Salisbury Plain UK on 11th and 12th May 2013.
The wind on Saturday 11th May was close to the FAI maximum all day, together with the occasional rain shower, and a bit chilly. The wind on Sunday 12th May had abated slightly, otherwise the weather was similar.
