F1E Flash

From Peter Brocks

FLASH - the 2013 F1E World Championship for Seniors are concluded. Alain Roux, France, is the new World Champion and the Team France won Gold. Bob Sifleet, USA, won individual Silver and Pierre Chaussebourg of France the bronze. Peter Brocks was 6th and Tom Ioerger 8th individual. The Team USA won the Silver medal Sifleet, Brocks, Ioerger). Flying today was very difficult with the wind coming from the side and wind speeds between 5m/s in the morning and 10m/s at the fly-off. Retrieval was very hard because of the long distances in the rough terrain, the corn and the trees that kept many models.

BOM on NFFS

There has been a BOM discussion on the NFFS Forum E-36 partly because of the GTS E036 that is available in RTF as well as kit.

This produced an unprecendent almost agreement between Aram Scholsberg and Dan Berry!

In addition there was a very insightful posting by Randy Reynolds who makes some intersting observations about non-FAC free flight.  Randy is mainly an AMA but his obsrvations apply to all FF that needs a site bigger than a football field.

Randy's observations ....

Re: E-36 and the AMA BOM Rule

Postby Randy Reynolds » Wed Aug 28, 2013 6:37 am

There is a world of model aviation outside of free flight that is shockingly different than the concept of BOM. Spend an hour surveying model aviation on YouTube and you'll find that almost all are buying ready made high performing ARFs at unbelievably low prices. This is a world of radio control and attracts the highest percentage of those coming into the sport. Free flight could benefit from the numbers of R/C modelers by interesting them in our sport. However F/F has inherent issues in that regard. Not the least of which are the very high costs for competitive endurance flying which include chase bikes, trailers, electronic trackers; RDT, etc. The cost of competitive Free Flight is likely one of the highest in model aviation.

Layer on the whole BOM issue and it isn't likely that we'll convert very many people to Free Flight as there doesn't exist an over the counter, low cost, high performance model I can buy and go fly. In addition there is the matter of flying sites, local hobby shops, lack of knowlegable mentors and all the other well known impediments. We can see that free flight doesn't stand much of a chance in the universe of model aviation.

That said there are promising signs with the growth of FAC scale model flying where BOM makes sense. Also the costs are low and the on line knowledge base and mentoring are plentiful, These models also don't require large fields, trackers and chase bikes typically. In addition it is likely that the small electric power systems will likely make inroads as time goes by.

Personally I don't think that the BOM rule has much relevance one way or another as it is impossible to enforce and doesn't have any real impact on "winning". Those who build their own are apt to be the most successful competitors versus those who might have help or buy someone else's product. If you think about it wouldn't we want all participants under the free flight tent even if they didn't build their own? Participation is key to our future. Just ask those who fly their favorite event at local club contests against....who? Perhaps one other person or maybe none?? That's not healthy for the sport.

Rarely have we had the case of a well known product that is easily identifiable as "pre-built" as is the case with this E36 under discussion. I think it would be healthy for us to let modelers buy and fly. This would be good for the event and good for increasing participation.
