2012 SCAT Annual
March 24, 2012, Lost Hills, CA

Twenty one flyers that came to Lost Hills despite the daily shifting weather forecast were rewarded with one good day of flying on Saturday.  We had 5 SCAT members out of the country, competing in Norway and New Zealand.

The Wunder ground hourly weather forecast at 5 am Saturday was remarkably accurate for both wind speed, direct and participation through out the weekend . The first round was delayed one hour due to the 8 mph drift toward the gypsum mounds.  The breeze dropped or the start of Round 1. The drift went every direction during the seven rounds with the associated tricky thermals as indicated with only 4 max outs in the FAI events.

Ben Coussens flew his first F1A contest in 2 years and was joined by his past Jr team partner Dallas Parker—both maxed out as did Don Zink.  As the forecast said, the wind came up at 4 pm and so no fly-off.  The plan was to do a Sunday morning fly-off but Sunday saw the rain as predicted and Don and almost everyone decided to depart. Ben and Dallas decided to wait to have Don and flyoff at the San Val contest in April. They also decided to split the $100 twenty something prize money.

Bob Piserchio was the only clean F1B flyer and had a boomer on his last flight while Bill Booth being clean through 6 rounds did 114 seconds in round 7—I understand he and Blake launched at the same time--- Blake did 115 seconds.

F1C Doug Joyce had problems while Lynn Pulley did 5 maxes to secure AmCup points. Ed Carroll planned to come but had a construction going on at his house – Ed was last year’s winner and will get the perpetual trophy to Lynn.

Thanks to Stan Buddenbohm and Ralph Ray for running the OHLG and OCAT. It looked as though they would only be watching themselves but Jeff Englert from Kansas came out to fly. Jeff was out on  a work trip—great when you can get your boss to pay for your model competition travel.

High Time Jr trophies goes Taron (power) and Sevak  (rubber)

Knowing the wind was predicted to come up, everyone packed up quickly so I did individual hand outs of the Malhkasyan Laser Plate Trophies to the winners. The  glider trophies had  Bob VanNest’s 1961 A2 drawing, the rubber trophies have Jim Patterson’s 1961 Wake drawing and the power trophies had  Craig Cusick’s 1961 Saturn drawing. Sevak recreated the drawing from the SCATTER drawings done by Craig Cusick.

No one flew Nostalgia Wake or E36 but George Malhkasyan had a near complete carbon fiber fuselage E36.

As mentioned, the rain moved in early Sunday morning. The road to the field was still in good shape but most people left with a forecast for continual rain and the contest was officially cancelled.

Because there are several left over trophies I’ll be getting one of the trophies to Bob  VanNest and Craig Cusick. If any one wants any of these left over trophy plates let me know. The remainder will be distributed to the SCAT RV’s—fun to use at up coming LH BBQs.
