Skyscrapers Challenge

Free Flight Friends,

The Wilber and Orville Spring meet is this coming weekend June 12-13 at Barron Field in Wawayanda, NY.  From conversation with CD Art Ellis, I believe it will have the same Saturday and Sunday schedule and events as the Challenge.  Those specifics will be forwarded as soon as I receive the approval from CD Art Ellis.

Here are results from last week's Skyscraper Challenge.  Performances to highlight include Igor Fradkin just ahead of Peter Barron in F1A and Tom Vaccaro Just ahead of Aram Schlosberg in F1B.  Note also that junior team member Brian Pacelli was in contention for the F1B win even until the last flight and that junior team member Brede Doerner had several good F1B flights as well, finishing fourth.  Dave Rounsaville in F1P and Bob Sifleet in F1H had dominating performances.  Note how close the finishes were in F1G with Bill Buss maxing out to edge Tom Vaccaro by 4 seconds and in the hotly contested F1Q with Dick Ivers finishing not more than 10 seconds ahead of Rich Ivers and Dave Lacey.

To mention some of the outcomes of other well-contested events, Bob Sowder finished tops in the classic gas events, Al Vollmer beat Bob Sowder by 1 second in 1/4A Nostalgia, Bill Buss won P-30, Michelle Barron had a flyaway max to win Junior catapult glider, consistently strong Larry Pelatowski bested several in Open catapult, and Bob Morris accomplished a rare feat by besting Larry Pelatowski with his discus-launched HLG.

It was great to see the young Juniors Taylor and Riley Pelatowski (Larry's grand-kids) flying junior catapult and junior HLG (won by Taylor), Gina Barron flying her classic towline, and Julie Barron competing well in F1A.

We had 64 paid contestants (40 in FAI/AMA/NFFS and 24 in FAC with a little overlap).  Eddie Pelatowski is thanked for well-run Flying Aces activity which has a growing number of participants.

Here are the scores from the scorebook provided by Lisa Paceli and Dave Acton -- Thanks, Andrew Barron

Mind mapping the Electric Fence Scenario

Duke SCAT,

I read Ken Bauer's tale of electricity and goats in the latest edition of your fine organ and I instantly remembered the mind mapping exercise of Per Findhal presented at the recent UK FAI Conference. I'd taken a picture of Per's map (lots of information about how to fly and max and the things you need to perfect to be a class flyer like him). Yes there on Per's map is a section on 'Model Retrieval' and below that is a comment on getting models from electrified enclosures. It seem Per practices this very activity at his local farm in Sweden. A result of Per's talk I learn that the UK team for the forthcoming Turkish Euro Champs will be practicing getting Stafford's new flapper out of the lion enclosure at London Zoo in the next few weeks.

I would have thought that a more challenging prep for the Euro Champs would a training session in the glens being the habitat of the dreaded haggis.  Or are the sassanachs on the UK team not up to such a formidable beast?

I could also comment, having observed the UK national team in other championship ship events that they may need some training in other areas that could be provided by the Scottish national beverage, although may be it is not a problem in Turkey where the strongest drink is the coffee?
