2009 AmCup Report #2

The AmCup season start of several west coast contests has wrapped up and the central and eastern contests have started. There are several strong starts to the season but with 21 contests still to fly, the competition is still wide open.

I’m one of those off to a strong start but I know my good friends will make it  an excellent F1A season.  In F1B, Blake Jensen has two strong wins and a second place for first with a long list of solo wins just behind him. In F1C Faust Parker is in the lead with two wins and a third place but Mike Roberts is in second with two stronger winners. Will this be the year Mike flies at another field other than Tangent and Lost Hills and go for the AmCup win?  Dave Rounsaville has the lead in F1P but Bob Hanford, the 2007 AmCup winner and   new comer Glen Scheinder both have two wins. Tiffany O’del has three strong wins, looks like she was motivated last year when she could not win a year end contest to secure the AmCup win. The F1H flyers might just have to team up to stop the first place, three wins plus a second place McKeever juggernaut or step to the side to watch him battle it out with second place Brian VanNest with two wins and a second. Faust Parker is in the lead20in F1J but Austin Gunder looks to be back, he has two wins. Having now graduated, we’ll see where his first job lands him—hopefully near a FF field.  F1Q continues to grow. Bernie Crow is in the lead but close behind is Frank Pollard—don’t turn and look but Julie Parker is on you’re heels. F1E has a few new names on the score card but two past two year’s winner, Peter Brocks, is in the lead.

The Hartill Cup entry has not increased from the first AmCup report. I suspect the lack of promotion is the likely cause. Here’s a recap of the Hartill Trophy program: competition series composed of 16 AmCup contest over two years, 2009 thru 2010. Entry is $50 per event. The entry fee will be split into 1st 2nd and 3rd place prizes along with SCAT provide trophies and certificates.  The rules were published with the 2010 AmCup rules in SEN #1274, Dec 18, 2008 and are on the NFFs website. The first contests, Winter Classic (Ike’s), SCAT Annual, Skyscrapper Challenge are complete. The next contests are the Magnificent Mountain Men 14 rounder and the NATs.

Deadline for the 2009-2010 Hartill cup entry is July 4, 2009. Entry fees will be returned for events that do not have 5 entries.

Following are the current standings. Only entered competitors are listed. New entries will be retroactively scored.

F1A, 1) Ken Bauer, 2) Jim Parker, 3) Mike McKeever, 4)Brian V

F1E World Champs

Less than 2 month after the F1ABC World Champs in Bielopolje, Croatia there will be another outdoor free flight World Championship at the Wasserkuppe in Germany. This is the World Champs for the FAI Class F1E "Gliders with Automatic Steering".
The F1E World Champs have been held every 2 years since 1989. The first time the USA participated in these World Champs was in 2001 in Poland with one participant who finished in 4th place. In 2003 the USA had 2 contestants in Romania when Bob Sifleet became World Champion. In 2005 in Slovakia it was the first time the USA had a full Senior F1E team.  Norcal Results

Jim,
Sorry for the delay. As you can see, the number of contestants was down, possibly citing certain factors:
  • Weekend weather forecast (rain and wind)
  • Cost of gas
  • The economy
  • Waegell Field (actually quite nice with short, green vegetation), cattle were present
Big events flown on Saturday enjoyed the best conditions, with a few showerrs coming and going. We had to lower the max to 120 on the first, fourth and fifth rounds because of drift towards Sunrise Blvd.
Sunday suffered worse conditions with more rain, however the air was quite buoyant and the maxes were pretty easy to achieve for some flyers. All five rounds were completed but Bill V. (the overall CD) decided to shorten the contest close to noontime for the AMA events.
It was also nice to see John Pratt flying Wakefield again. Appears he hasn't lost his touch, although later he suffered cattle "chomps" on an OT rubber job that drifted downwind before he could retrieve it quickly (see attached photos).
Jack Emery was also present but did not enter Wake or Coupe. He has gotten the "Tip Launch Bug" and was seen getting advice from Lee Hines on trimming and launching.
Mark Belfield gets our award for "staying power". He arrived a day or two before the contest to test fly and remained on the field throughout the weekend and into Monday, staying in his pickup and airplane tent. He received quality time with Hank Cole, who admired his fleet of high tech rubber jobs.
The results are shown below.
