AmCup 2008, Two To Go

Thanks to Peter Brocks and Blake Jensen as well as others that provided corrections. These results should be accurate but if you spot an error, email me.

In F1A, Rene Limberger lost a point due to my Tangent bonus points error but he still maintains the lead. Another error caught hurt Steve Spence. This year by moving the Texas Cloud Climber contest to Seguin, only 2 of his three wins count at Seguin per the rules. Brian VanNest in second place has a shot beating Rene, he needs a win  in Eloy or Palm Bay and have 9 flyers to get 2 bonus points for the win.  Rene would win if Brian ties him, Rene’s 5th best score of 26 trumps Brian’s 23. Don’t forget Andrew Barron, he needs to gain 3 points  for the win and he is improving a 22 point score so Andrew needs a win with 12 flyers.  Like Brian, Rene would win if Andrew ties him. Will Andrew put on another flying clinic to get beat by his own model again?  Dave Edmonson made it into the top ten this year doing well in the Fall. I’m heading to Eloy to try to snatch fourth or fifth from Mike McKeever or Line Hines.

In F1B Paul Crowley is holding on to the lead but I think is in another fight with Blake Jensen who has been known to put on an end of the year charge. Blake can improve  his 21 point score with a simple win  not needing bonus points to take the lead. George Batiuk and Ed Vanlandingham are mathematically in but would need to win both remaining contests with a few bonus points.

Roger Simpson took the lead from Don Chesson but Don could regain the lead with a simple, no bonus point win. How far is the Swamp from Palm Bay?  Roger has been known to show at Eloy. This will be interesting.  Faust Parker is in the mathematical world. Mike Roberts could  win the AmCup some day if he discovered there are fields other than Tangent and Lost Hills. Dark horses are Norm Poti and Ron McBurnett tied for fifth. Both of them have only 3 scores counted so a win with four bonus points, which is not likely in F1C land, or two wins with a couple bonus points each could take the lead.

In 2007, Bob Handford beat out the Jr World Champion, Cody Secor.  This year Bob is in the lead, Dave Roundsaville in second and Cody in third.  Dave and Cody’s dad, Randy co-developed the Excelisor F1P that Cody flew to his third Jr WC. The F1P event is steadily growing beyond the Junior ranks but still only two contests  so far in F1P  have even a single bonus point. Cody won one of these and so with only 3 contests counted, he can win  the Am Cup back with a no-bonus point contest win.

I’ve learned that Tiffany O’Dell does not like the “Big Pink” label I used for her F1G. About just “Big” or just “Pink”. What ever you call her coup, she is still in the lead. Peter Brock has a shot at his up coming, home field Eloy contest if he can win and there and have six flyers. Seeing Blake’s situation in F1B, I image Tiffany and he already have airline reservations. Charlie Jones has a shot but rumor has it he will not be going to AZ or FL—time for him to focus on Croatia. Ed Vandlandingham has a shot too, he just needs a 24 point contest win— a 25 point win or a second with 4 bonus points. Brian VanNest is in mathematical land to win.

Well, well, Mike McKeever is in the F1H lead with Brian VanNest chasing him this year. Last year the roles were reversed and Brian held on to the lead to win the AmCup. Brian needs 26 points to tie for the win. Bob Sifleet is in a similar situation but needs a 29 point win which is unlikely. Consistent Jean Pailet is in fourth and I’m in fifth.  My flying buddies Hines and Thompson can knock me out of certificate position with a win.

In F1J Faust Parker is leading Jean Pailet and the previously mentioned F1P flyers, Dave Roundsaville and Bob Hanford with the 2009 USA F1C  team member, Gil Morris in fifth. Jean and Dave are tied and in the same boat needing a 28 point win. Similar to F1P, there have been only 3 bonus point contest so far this year so Faust’s lead is looking secure.

Bernie Crowe has figured out the AmCup scoring system and has flown himself to first place. Dick Wood is in second but 10 points behind and so would have to win the last two contests. Frank Pollard has won 5 contests this year but at only 2 sites so he only gets point for 3 contests. AZ or FL would be new a site and he would only need to place third to tie for the win. Dan Berry has won 3 contests as well but would need to place second or better because he would not win the tie breaker. Julie Parker is in fifth place with only three scores and so could move up but it would be unlikely to win.

Peter Brocks has had the F1E AmCup locked up for some time.  This event has plateaued with only 6 contests a year--- was this my inspiration for the Am-XCup?

SCAT is is putting the final touches on a not so extreme Am-XCup. Watch  for it in a SEN coming to you soon.

Fly for Cash

I have just formed a new organization of which I am the president, treasurer and secretary.  No other members are allowed.  The name of the organization is Central States Air Team, otherwise known as CSAT.  The sole purpose of this organization is to promote FAI Free Flight events in the Center States (Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin) by offering a cash prize at the end of each season.  The only rules are that the contests be held in the above states and that each person who wants to enter the cash prize venue makes a $100 ante before flying in any contest if he or she wants their scores to count for the end-of-season prize.  For outlanders, the ante is $500 because they will be taking advantage of all the superior flying fields and contest organization in these Central States.   We understand that they may feel that they are not getting their money’s worth, but considering how the financial world operates today, it is a reasonable fee.  Prizes will be divided from the total ante and awarded to the first-place winners only…who cares about second place anyway?   Ten percent of the entry will be used for cash prize awards, ten percent will be donated to the USA World Championship Teams, ten percent to the NFFS and the rest will be used to cover overhead.

Death of F1J

Reid has brought up many good points (as have others) about the finals and, in his latest posting, F1J. We have seen a decrease in F1J. It started years ago tho, as the high tech, high performance purchased models began to take over. It was a normal progression, the same that we have seen over and over again in our sport. We make what looks like simple, inexpensive, broad based rules and soon the technology of the time takes over.

Look at EZ B indoor- it was very simple and for a long time the model was realistic for the average builder. However, the masters of the sport began to take it seriously and now it is no longer a begineers indoor event. Penny Plane is the same.

Now, F1J has "technologied" itself to death and to compete you do need the 6 paneled, Cyclon powered, full bunted carbon model. I know, Jean Palleit (sp?) (my tree climbing buddy) is in the top of the points with his simplistic balsa models. But, that is because he has taken the time and toured the country, looking for points. But, has he won many events?

The event "needed" 5 second engine runs to calm these things down to a reasonably performing model. A good one will still top 5 minutes without too much problem. 5 Seconds on a balsa old style F1J will hardly do two. That is where we have killed the participation. Maybe we say, oh well, if you want to play with the big boys ya gotta pay the price.

I hate to say it, but do we make up more rules that handicap the technology and provide the standard models an engine run advantage? I really do not like these kind of things and know that it will never happen. So, we have an event that only the techies will fly and be competitive in.

I do know that my son John loves the 5 second rule. It makes it more competitive and is actually easier to trim! We all know what happens in those last 2 seconds...

It all boils down to F1J is still just another FAI event that takes time, money, and technology if you want to win. No one is stopping others from playing in our field, but when you only have a left handed glove and you are a rightie......

FAI has turned into a money pit and those that wish to play at the top of the game are willing to put the time, effort, and money into it. We can not fault the competitor that puts more of these three into the mix. And, most times, they will win...

And finally, I am still of the opinion that for the finals, you pay your money and you get to play.

ps.....Send me more Sympo articles- In fact, why not someone that has the [program's best interests at heart, write something up?

Wakefield Centenary

Roger and everyone else across the World ,

May I make a suggestion.

In three years time it will be the 100th anniversary of the Wakefield Cup contest, held on July 5th 1911, at Crystal Palace, London, according to what I read in SAM 1066's Newsletter by Peter Michel.

Now just suppose, that an International 100 th Anniversary Wakefield Competition was held in 2011?

On this particular occasion however, to celebrate the past 100 years and to find the very best flier in the World, each competitor has to achieve a combined score from flying a combination of vintage, classic and modern Wakefield designs flying to the rules pertaining at each period, over six rounds, completed with a single unlimited fly off?

Now surely this Centenary Competition will be sufficiently attractive and technically challenging for every FF flier in the World to want to have a go at winning this coveted, unique Crown??

This competition would bring all Free Flight Groups together, providing focus and publicity to our cherished hobby, which I believe we all seek.

Nick Bosdet.

Non-European Championships

Grand Duke of SCAT and All That Is,

I think your main problem is the sparse population of the FAI Free Flight World, outside of Europe

If you want a contest with 25-30 Countries on North American soil, you need to sub-divide into that many Countries and then put up with all the International bickering that we have to put up with in Europe.  I’ll have a word with that nice Mr Obama.

The fact is that Europe has Countries smaller than your States.  Why not have an inter-state Pan American Champs?  If California keeps winning, you could group states so as to get similar size populations of sportsmen.

Regards

Mike Fantham

Eur -> World Champ

Hi Roger

The best solution is to organise a World champ every year and to suppress the European champs. The organisation needs exactly the same time and I'm sure that most of european competitor prefer to compete a WC than a EC.

Faust's Extreme Comments

=========================

Faust Parker <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

SCAT, through the Americas Cup program, has developed an incredible nation wide contestcircuit made up of both large and small events. These events represent both pure FAI and mixed FAI/AMA formats. The value added by the A.C. has been responsible for increased participation and financial viability for many of these contests. Having said that, I think that SCAT has aresponsibility to not pull the rug out from under these events, especially the smaller ones.
Would it make more sense for SCAT to maintain the AC as is, and have a separate category for the Xtreme entrants at the same contest? Contestants could be scored by the current system and by the proposed Xtreme system for the designated events. At the end of the year you could recognize the small, large and Xtreme champions. This could be phased in over time and would give SCAT a chance to "test the waters" before diving headlong into a format that might or might not work.
The problems I see with the Xtreme concept arenumerous. First the contest should be evenly distributed across the country (a problem?). For those of us still working, making it to 4 events requiring significant travel (1.5 -2 days driving each way) isan issue. I have determined that air travel with F1C's is no longer an option for me because the skies are no longer "friendly". So my current schedule allows for 2-3 long and 3-4 short trips (<1 day each way) per year provided that work and personal life events allow. Then we throw in the Finals every otheryear and well --- you get my drift.I thinkMOST Americas Cup participants lay out their schedule and that’s that, unless there is some specific opportunity at the end of the year that could give them a shot at the win. I feel SCATmight be verydisappointedat the relatively few people that will be interested in the proposed Xtreme format, especially if said formatis really disguised future team selection process. The apple cart is in pretty good shape as it stands right now. With the fragile state of free flight nation wide, I implore SCAT to not upset that cart any more than necessary.
Faust
