The Palm software (Altitude Analysis or AA) is actually written by me and
Petri Kuikka, so half the credit should go to him. The software is
freeware, we decided that making it commercial would be too tedious, and
can be downloaded from: http://koti.welho.com/pkuikka/aa/ . Feel free to
offer Petri and me a beer when you meet us, if you find the software
useful :)

I have tried various altitude loggers, LoLo, Alti2, RAM2 and Altimax. The
first three have larger memory and are able to log a number of flights,
while Altimax has memory for one flight only. I find this quite
sufficient, as I want to plot the data from each flight right after the
flight anyway. Altimax has less memory, which makes downloading the data
faster compared to the others, this makes a difference on older Palms
using OS3 ir OS4, newer ones are so much faster that it makes no
difference.

The size and weight of units has been reducing. LoLo was 10 grams, Alti2
was 7 (with cut down power lead), RAM2 5g (with cut lead), and Altimax is
around 2.5 grams. Personally I prefer Altimax, due to the small size (I
fly F1B, no room properly for the bigger and heavier units). Also the
"start logging when exceeding a threshold" feature on Altimax is nice,
there is no empty data preceding the launch. Of the other units, Alti2 has
a better resolution (50cm instead of 1m of Altimax), and has the neat
feature that the logging can be turned on with RC equipment, so if you
have a spare servo channel on your timer you can use it to turn the
logging on and off. RAM2 has even better resolution, 30cm (1ft), but no
way to start the logging only at the launch of the model. I have heard
that a new version of RAM is on the way, also rumours of Alti3, but have
not seen those yet.

The AA web site also has links to the manufacturers of the loggers.

Roger,

Thanks for running my piece on NFFS Nostalgia BOM rule (and sorry for the
spelling errors).

I was very surprised to read that the San Diego Orbiteers have abolished the
BOM rule for club events. This may be the type of grass roots action that
will bring about institutional change. This is one of the few internal
actions that our representative organizations can take that will help with
participation. From the club, to NFFS, to the AMA!

Leave the "Dark Mark" to Harry Potter and his friends.

I am pleased to announce the availability of some new FAI towline products. We
have some interesting new "hi visibility yellow" & "dutch orange" high density
(gel spun) spectra lines. The yellow line is avaliable at 130lbs(dia=0.52mm) te
st and is ideal for "everyday" F1A use. the orange is 107lbs(dia=0.48mm) test a
nd is a low drag option for still air flyoffs in F1A or general F1H use. both a
re $0.35 per meter.

From all my travels to England, I never had the experience that the
English kitchen is to be appreciated.
The remark made by Mike Woodhouse about Denny's seems to prove my
point!
