In early 1945, Brokenspar
was a GI enroute to the European Theatre,
via troop ship to the UK,
- then three days on a train
from Liverpool to South Hampton,
and, an overnite Channel crossing
on some kind of small British troop transport,
to La Havre. ( ..that's in France, Charley )
The Channel weather was angry,
cold - no moon. Rain and wind.
And, ...we were in blackout.
We were to cross the channel overnite.
We had to cross the deck
in the weather
and slide down some stairs
...more like ladders...
to get to the mess.
Lighted dimly by swaying lightbulbs
over galvanized waist high metal tables.
- one big pot for about ten of us.
Elbow a place to stand
with the ness kit unfolded just
with the pan out flat -
Ladle your self a serving..
...fish around in the soup...lumps...
catch one...spill it onto the mess kit...
Looled lile the tongue of a shoe,
grey felt...
Try to cut it in half with the edge of the fork.
...screw it.....get the whole thing in your mouth.
.....there was no taste.... chew...
Grumbling at the table
..-.' .. the f*** is this ! -
- English cooking -
The bunks were three tiers.
In the bottom one you got wet,
splashing water -
- the boat rolling in Channel Seas.

Team Selection Proposal
========================
Jim Pareker
Team Selection Discussion:
The USA is one of the few countries that selects its team at
a single contest. Our geographic dispersion prevents us from
having an equable multi-contest point selection method. We
value a level playing field over selecting the “bestâ€
team. This proposal maintains the positive aspects of the
current program and improves upon it. The finals would be
formatted in a similar manner as the present one except each
day would be a complete stand alone contest.
The team selection will be determined as shown.
Team Member #1 is the winner of the 1st Final day contest
Team Member #2 is the winner of the 2nd Final day contest
Team Member #3 is the flyer with the lowest average of their
placement from the 1st and 2nd day . Tie breaker to be the
total flight time of both days.
In the event of circumstances that prevents the declaration of
a winner on the 1st day of flying, the program would revert
back to selecting all three team members from the 2nd day of
flying + flyoff
Pros
- Maintains single site finals and current fly 2
days, time one day, 4 day format
- More closely simulates the WC 7 round + flyoff
- Improve participation because there would be more
than once chance every 2 years to make the team. That is if
you drop badly on the 1st day, win the 2nd day and make the
team
- 2 rewards for winning
- 1 reward for being consistency
Cons
- Greater Finals logistics- Doubles the number of
potential flyoffs. The schedule would need to be adjusted to
allow for the next morning flyoff on day 2 and 3.
This proposal has been discussed for the last several
programs. Its time to seriously consider making changes to
improve the program within the changing context of our sport.
Please discuss this proposal with your Team Selection
Committee member before their in person were they have the
opportunity to make a change for the 2009 Team Selection.
Thermals, Jim Parker
