I am not a team selection participant but I offer the following re: the
finals site conundrum. Henry Spence and the Texas Cloud Climbers have an
excellent solution: Sendera Ranch.
For those who haven't seen this field it is really something special. Huge,
pretty flat, and with few downwind hazards, it is surely the finest FF site
of all time in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The only problem is the rancher
who is still reticent to host a meet as large as the finals. His main
concern has been fire danger (which the TCC responded to with a fuse DT and
smoking ban in 2006).
Hopefully the good relationship will continue so the TCC can host the finals
at Sendera Ranch in the near future.
Another possibility is the dry lakebed at Gerlach, Nevada. I remember
reading that is it something like 10x15 miles.

It's always inevitable that some one suggests flying the minis so we can
fly on a smaller field. Obviously they've missed a couple facts that
make this a bad idea:
1. Smaller lighter models have a greater reaction to thermals by going
higher and farther than their larger, heavier cousins. So, you actually
need a larger field.
2. All FAI models F1A thru F1J present a low profile=20
as they drift downwind. Their low profile makes the harder to see than
other FF model types. This means they're harder to keep in sight for the
timers.
Every time we change the rules, we inadvertently obsolete most of the
already stuff we currently fly,
which is something you hope those who change the rules keep in mind. If
we don't keep rule changes to a minimum we'll continue to chase FFer's
to RC or U-Control or maybe even fishing, hunting, golf, tennis or any
of hundreds of other endeavors that don't require room to compete or
even fun fly.
