The First Annual SCAT FAI Mentorship Award
===========================================

At this years Scat's America's Cup banquet the First Annual
Mentorship
Award will be announced and awarded. Mentoring is the one of the most
important activities that a modeler can do to help others get into, and
stay involved in our unique sport and hobby. We believe it is a fair
statement to say that most of us have had one or more mentors who have
been instrumental and pivotal in our getting and staying involved in
FIA free flight modeling. Without their tireless help many of us would
not have been able to learn all that is needed to learn and enjoy our
sport. It has certainly been the case for us and without the many hours
of helping, teaching, and coaching of several mentors we would have
never have been able to get into and stay interested in FIA Free
Flight. We believe that the tireless efforts of mentors have not had
the acknowledgment and recognition they deserve. They are the lifeblood
of our sport. Our growing junior FIA team success is due to a host of
people who coach, each, encourage and support the young men and women
in getting started and staying involved in our unique sport.

The Mentorship award is being initiated and administered by Jon Davis.

SCAT is supporting the mentorship award and it will be an annual award
at the America's Cup banquet.

To get the issue of mentorship known and promoted Jon is creating a
color brochure that will announce and explain the mentorship award and
how it will be administered. The brochure will be given out at this
years banquet. Jon is requesting short comments and stories from any of
you who have had an important mentor in your life who made a difference
to you in getting involved in free flight modeling. Please write a
short paragraph or a sentence or two of who made a difference to you
and Jon will include them in the brochure to be given out at this years
MaxMen banquet. If you have photos please send those as well,
preferably digital and he will include as many as he can. For many of
us our most important mentors have passed on but there memories stay
with us forever. We realize that this is short notice but we think we
all know who the people are that helped us and it won't take you long
to write a few lines to honor them. International response is welcomed=
as well.

The NFFS digest will also have an article on Mentorship in the near
future. Any help you can provide with this is greatly appreciated.

F1E is not "magnet steering"
============================

Hurrah, another one to poke a stick in the bee's nest!
Gyro control is certainly legal. F1E is _not_ about "magnet steering", but
automatic steering. Some years ago I published my experiment on a GPS
controlled F1E and got a lot of responses stating that it was illegal -
wrongly so, as Ian Kaynes pointed out. Some countries have translated the
code sportif into their language, and used the vulgar term magnet steering
instead of translating correctly.
It did not use to matter, as there was no feasible alternate way of doing
it, but there even are historic tries of replacing the magnet by something
else - like "sun steering" using a slit to pass light selectively to
fotocells activating a coil moving the rudder directly ... somewhere around
the early fifties, no electronics!
So - use any means of control based in the plane, just do not use a radio -
everything else is legal!

In 2 weeks at the Isaacson Winter Classic we will have the 3rd F1E contest
in America on Monday, February 14 on the hill South of the entrance to the
Lost Hills flying field. We will not only fly F1E but as a separate event we
will have a Mini-F1E contest. Mini-F1E models have a magnet steering device
and a maximum wing span of 600mm or 23.6". Both events start at noon. We
will have 5 rounds of 45 minutes each. We are planning to have fun -
spectators are welcome but should park at the bottom of the hill outside of
the landing area.

In the morning of this Monday we will do some F1E training on this hill and
starting at about 10 AM will do the processing of the models entered in the
F1E Team Selection Contest on Tuesday. All models entered must have the FAI
Specification Certificate, the FAI sticker, must carry an identification
code on each part of the model and must be equipped with a magnet steering
device (see the 2005 FAI FF TSP f/F1E). Lee Hines is the CD for the F1E
Finals.

Re: Aviator Movie. Yup, the beet field crash and the open cockpit
speed run were laughable, but to me, the most bogus part was the
almost fatal Beverly Hills crash in which the starboard wing slashed
through the walls of a whole block of multistory buildings without
discernable damage to the aircraft or any course alteration.

In spite of all that, the film was worth the six bucks (senior
citizen rate) just to see Kate Blanchette play the young Katherine
Hepburn.

Roger,
You are right! The first "Best Picture" Oscar went to Wings. I got
the two mixed up. Dawn Patrol was another good aviation movie back then.

"Wings" was indeed the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture.
Stars were Richard Arlen, Buddy Rogers, and Mary Pickford. BTW, it's a
silent movie.
