WC chase stories

Chasing models during the 2005 World Champs in Argentina provided lots
of fun and adventure. The weather seemed somewhat unpredictable as the
wind blew a different direction every day. On F1A day it was blowing
directly towards the lake and there were reports of models landing close
to the water and in and around the nuclear power plant next to the lake.
The flightline was moved to prevent models from getting wet, but there
was one report of a glider that flew away with the towline attached in a
thermal. It flew over the whole lake and was later recovered on the dry
ground on the other side!
The fun for me started on F1B day as I was chasing Roger's model. The
wind was blowing pretty good, around 8m/s, away from the lake and
towards open fields and farms. Thanks to Hector Diaz, the US team had
the assistance of a couple of local Argentinian motorcycle riders to
help chasing. We rode on the back of their bikes while telling them
where to go by either pointing or using newly learned Spanish words.
Although they didn't smell really great, didn't speak english, and one
guy was missing most of his teeth, they quickly figured out how to get
us downwind quickly under the models.
Roger insisted on picking huge thermals, and his flights were drifting
downwind a couple miles at least. About the 3rd round he landed in the
middle of an uncut cornfield. It took about 20 minutes to track it down
with using the radio beacon. Then the next round he overflew the
cornfield but unfortunately the wind caused the model to tumble on the
ground and the tailboom broke. Should have landed in the corn again.
Then the next round he went even further yet into another field.
Straight line chasing was impossible so radio tracking at the end guided
me to the model. It was in a field with a bunch of cows on the other
side of a canal. After searching the canal for a spot where I could
jump over, I noticed the model was sitting about 30 feet from a cow with
horns, which turned out to be a bull. An Australian flyer walking by
confirmed it, "that's a bull!". The bull was looking right at me, and I
was looking right at him. I figured I would just slowly walk up to the
model, and if the bull moved towards me I would run for the canal and
jump in. Fortunately I had left my red team jacket behind this flight.
So as I walked up to the model the bull stared at me the whole time, but
never moved. I wanted to get out of there quickly, but the stab on
Roger's model had come loose and wasn't seated right. I started messing
with it to put it back on while watching the bull at the same time, but
was flustered and nervous so I decided it would be easier to just take
it off. With the stab removed I walked back towards the canal and
fortunately the bull stayed right where he was. Oh, and I forgot to say
that each chase required climbing over a couple barbed wire fences too.
The next day the weather looked nicer and we were chasing for the F1C
guys. In the first round it turns out that the drift in the air is
exactly opposite the drift indications on the ground, and the models are
drifting directly towards the road, power lines, and hills next to the
field. I'm chasing Kenny Happerset's model, which then lands in a tree
about 100 feet up on top of this hill which is covered with dense brush.
Lucky me. Crossing more barbed wire fences I thrash my way through the
brush and up the hill hoping there are no snakes in the grass. My
Argentine motorcycle friend joins in and actually reaches the model
before me. The tree is fortunately not too big, and the model is
dangling by the stab within reach. We carefully get it out with only a
few scratches on the wing. The tough part is then hiking back down
without the model getting caught in the trees and brush, but my friend
helps hack out a pathway.
The rest of the day goes pretty smooth with easy chases, and the
american models land in and around the power lines, power poles, and
fences but miraculously never hit them. I end up chasing John Warren's
model in the flyoff. The 7 min round is flown near dusk around 5:50pm.
John has an overrun and has to launch a 2nd model. I chase the first
model but nobody was available to chase his second flight so it is still
sitting out on the field and the sun is going down. I get the radio
retrieval gear, get Hector and our rental car, and start driving across
the corn fields to a spot near where the model came down. (large
amounts of corn stalks were later pulled from the bottom of the car!)
The radio signal tells me the model is on the other side of a good sized
canal. Jim Parker and Mike Mckeever are crossing this same canal with
Archer's and Happerset's models, so I get Jim's help in finding the
canal crossing spot, which is tough because the canal is surrounded with
four foot high thick brush. Jim and I get across the canal and continue
following the radio signal in the near darkness. Blake Jensen meets up
with us as well from another direction. The radio tracker points
towards another canal surrounded by thick brush, but fortunately this
canal is dry. After some fooling about, several radio lines point
towards a spot in this dry canal. I slowly move in and at the same time
Jim is moving in from the other side of the canal and at almost the same
time we see the model sitting in a low spot down in the brush. Just in
time because about 10 minutes later it is totally dark. Fortunately
Tiffany is close with their car because getting back to where Hector and
I started would have been very hard. We would never have found that
model without the radio.
Chasing was just one part of the World Champs, but was lots of fun for
me. Best part of all is spending time with friends from around the
world. Thanks to all who made this trip possible for the US team, and
others around the world.

Another passing of a great one. I spent more time pondering Frank's books

Hi all....
Because of unforeseen circumstances, I have lost the F1C and F1A event director
s for the NATS. So, I am looking for a couple of individuals that would be will
ing to run these two events. It takes a "special" person to run these events (y
a got to be able to handle Gutai!!) and am going to my FAI friends....
Also, congrats to the USA Team. Looks like the juniors opened the door and the
big boys walked on thru.....

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
Very disappointed with the Chicago design Ralph sent you as published.
Looks nothing like my airplane that I swear was a design of the same
club The Chicago Prop Nutz. More disappointing is that it looks like my
archrival Don Alberts' SWAT. We flew together when I was in the Army in
ElPaso,Texas in ' 54. He designed the SWAT much later. He was a great
ffer but a spoiled brat at the time. About 16-17, I was 21. Very hard to
get along with for me anyway. But maybe it was me. Have not met too many
ffers that fit that description though. Is he still around. I know his
older mentor buddy Jim Taylor recently died.

Ed,
Go to the NFFS website and download the Nostalgia Design Approval
Form. Fill it out and send it to me with a dated full size plan. The big
thing is to find dated photos for proof that the plane was designed and
flown before January 1957. Magazine and newspaper articles are fine too.

Fellow Free Flighters,
This week in Argentina the US F1B Wakefield team (Morrell, Tymchek, and
Andriukov) has finished as the World Champion team, while in F1A Glider
former Glastonbury Connecticut resident Mike McKeever finishes as the
individual World Champion. Congratulations to Mike, Roger, Bob, and Alex!
Look to www.argentina2005.com for updates on the F1B flyoffs and the F1C
results as their flying continues.
Closer to home, this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) is our Skyscraper
Challenge at Barron Field in New York, an America's Cup and National Cup
contest with a wide range of events in FAI, AMA, NFFS, FAC, and some SAM.
Details are given below. The weather looks good: pleasant temperatures,
light wind, only occasional showers.
In addition to this May 28-29 meet we call your attention also to the
June 11-12 Wilber and Orville Contest at Barron Field. CD Art Ellis tells
me that the W&O, which he runs with help from Connecticut Juniors from their
Eli Whitney Museum based-club, has all the same FAI, AMA, NFFS, and SAM
events as our gathering this weekend (except they won't have any official
FAC events at their June meet this time). The W&O is for all age groups.
Jim Parker (who also maxed out in F1A at the World Champs this week) asked
me to get the word out that the W&O contest is an America's Cup Plus contest,
meaning that it counts just as much as America's Cup contests for Junior Team
Selection purposes.
Come participate this weekend and in a couple of weeks!

Thanks Terry,
I sent this to Tony. Apparently his plan states the design as 1951 but
that is not sufficient. The kit or publication date governs. Has anyone
we know of proof of purchase of the kit or a published picture or
drawing that is dated 1951. Another possibility is that the design date
on the drawing is actually the kit date also. Can Jim Rhoades or Jay
Jackson answer these questions? Lets try to help this poor guy out.
Thank God Lew Mahieu is still around and has answered my Zeek questions.
And thanks to all you guys that came up with drawings of the beloved
Zeek. Has anyone else named their aircraft design after a girlfriend?

Hi Ed,
Read in the scat newsletter where Tony is trying to
get ahold of Jay Jackson for info on Kitting or
advertisement of the Top Banana to see if it is legal
for vintage in england(i.e. before 1951 kitted or
such)
I know some of them were kitted but don't know when.
Jays phone number is (801) 485-0314
Jim Rhoades who is a member of the same club and a
good friend of Jay Jackson may be able to help or may
be able to get the info you need. I have copied him

Would have sent this directly to Tony but didn't see

Hi Bill,
Thanks! Yes I have over a dozen different plans of Zeeks in my computer
made mostly from kit plans. Some from Murf's Cronicles, but he was off
on dimensions. I have verified the discrepencys. As I understand it for
the limy's just a plan doesn't work. It must be the original kit or
publication date. A Pond plan will not suffice unless he verifies the
original date of the source. I think he, Tony Shepherd, is ok on the
Zeek now with what I gave him but now the problem is with the Top
Banana. He has a half A Banana that at this point he can't fly in
competition. Ed Mate

Hi Ed,
I think that the "John Pond" plans, sold by AMA will be from the
original kits. There are many CAD plans available which are not faithful
copies.

GENTLEMEN: Perhaps one of your readers can help me- I've had no luck with the
A.M.A or S.A.M.: In 1981 I submitted a model to the late (and great) John Pond
for SAM approval; the HALLOCK 'BOBTAIL', a tailless free flight design powered
by a Phantom '.27'.
This airplane, designed by Bruce K. Hallock, then of Medina, Oh, won the
original design event at the 1939 Scripps-Howard Nationals. The model was
approved by SAM as an 'Old Timer', but I don't think any have been built and
flown in any SAM event.
One of Mr. Hallock's sons is writing a book about his father's modeling days
as a member of the old CLEVELAND 'BALSA BUTCHERS', and is searching for any
books or magazine issues that covered the 1939 contest, especially the
original design event. We know that a newsreel was made of the contest,
probably by the SCRIPPS-HOWARD crew, but have no idea how to get a copy.
Also,
were the AMA Nationals and Scripps-Howard Nats the same contest, or were
the different events?
Thank you for your assistance in our search, and HAPPY FLYING!

Drawing 3 views

Background: WW I Aero/Skyways magazine sells a US $100 program on disk for
DOS that can help draw a 3 view from a photograph. The program requires
digitizing many points from the photo and it looks like a digitizing tablet mig

best. I understand it's a tedious process, but is offered as a solution for
drawings that do not now exist.
Last week, Hometime, a PBS home improvement show, displayed a new way to
measure for countertops. Instead of making a scrap wood template, they placed
small, specially marked, circular disks on key points like corners of the base
framework, and then photographed the layout with a digital camera. Back at the
office, the photos are used to create drawings and then through CAD/CAM, make
the countertops. The product Corian-stuff countertop fit exactly where it shoul

- most impressive! I'm wondering if this process lends itself to making 3
views, even tho the home-oriented application is only working in 2 dimensions.
Actually, when you think about it, the view from the camera is looking at a 3
dim picture. Anyone have any specifics on a process like this?
Just an hour ago, I though about writing this note and knowing that Carlo
Godel would respond! We're going to miss him. I had the pleasure of knowing him
for a few hours each year at the January SW Regionals contest at Eloy, Arizona.
Carlo would come to the contest to fly Rapier models - some constructed on
the spot! He was a 'good guy' !

Roger,
Please post.
I would like to thank all of the you who sent get well cards, letters,
E-mails, or called me while I was in the Hospital recently. It was very encour
aging
to me each night when my wife would bring be a handful of cards and E-mail.
We are indeed a small but close nit community.
I was released from the hospital last Friday, May 13th, after a 3 1/2 week
stay to treat an internal infection which also led to having a heart valve
replace. I am now home and on the road to recovery. It is going to be a slowe
r
recovery that I had hoped for and I likely will not be fully up to fly F1B's
again till late July or August. I am really looking forward to getting back to
flying and attending contest again, but in the meantime it will give me a
chance to work on my F1B's at home.
Once again I am very grateful to for all you for the interest shown to me
while I was in the hospital. You kindness was really appreciated.

Old F1A Wings wanted

If anyone has a set of F1-A wings for sale, please let us know. They don't
have to be up-to-date-competitive, or anything like that. They can be
covered or not, and they can be in a repairable state. What got ol' Tom
Protheroe, & I, to thinking about this is; we've got to the point where
towing & chasing, etc., is pretty much out of the realm of what we can
handle, but we still enjoy seeing a model high in a thermal. Hence we are
flying electric motor-gliders.
We used to compete in an annual cross-country distant event, out in Baker,
CA,
and the last one that ran had an electric event, for which I adapted a F1-B
rig.
Owing to the wind on the day of the event, I only made 32.5 miles. Anyway I
still have the model, (flew it today), but it gets a little hard to see, and
it occurred to us that an F1-A version might show up a little better.
As usual, I told you mare than you wanted to know, but if you've got some
old, cob-web magnet wings, let us know!
Roger Grigsby.
