Our new issue of Free Flight Quarterly has appeared. As in previous
issues, we have tried to present; articles; on a variety of; Fre
e
Flight topics.

In this issue Jean Wantzenriether writes about the great Emmanuel
Fillon, the legendary French modeller, who died recently. We have two
"how to" articles. Gene Wallock shows how to build properly folding OT
propeller blades, one of the really difficult steps in mastering the
construction of a rubber ship. In the second John Kamla discusses the
correct rigging of button timers with many examples of actual
installations. Electronic timers are making inroads in several
categories, and Fritz Mueller shows how they can be programmed with
simple press button techniques, no Palm computers needed.

Shigeru Kanegawa discusses the hardships of FF flyers in Japan and
shows a plan of his F1C W/C winning model. Sean O'Connor has
investigated several techniques for safe D/T of small rubber models,
and made measurements of the actual D/T speeds, correlating them with
the tip-up angle of the stab, the tip-up wing method was found most
desirable.

Bernard Scott; talks about the history of the PAA Load class, a
category still very much alive in NZ. Tandy Walker's masterful series
of Construction of Chester Lanzo's Airborn is on its second part,
dealing with the fuselage construction.

Model aerodynamics are not neglected with a discussion on the TOP
trimming procedure by Jean Wantzenriether, and on the true explanation
of the creation of lift by a wing,; by the Ed.

Scale aficionados will not be disappointed with the presentation of
Chris Starleaf's superb models by Mike Stuart...and more.

You can also see what young Bob White could build at age 17 on the
cover of this issue. Log on our website:

best wishes to all our readers

European Championships

I am writing to clarify the definition of Europe but without getting
into the other arguments about the event. In FAI terms the European
Championships are a Continental Championship for the region defined in
the Sporting Code General section as follows in para 3.5.4.3:

Europe - comprising all the countries in and to the North of the
Mediterranean Sea including

adjacent island countries; and the countries to the West of the Caspian
Sea; including Iceland,

Ireland, Israel, all of Russia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom (Great
Britain), but not including Iran

(mentioned because it has a boundary on the West side of the Caspian
Sea).

Thanks Martin Gregorie but you are talking about sport flying which is
much fun but I have no time for, the Meteorboat is designed for
competition flying. With the hull removed it can ROG on a single wheel
up front like a hatchet design. This also doubles as a D/T bumper as
most LG's do. I am trying to make the hull attachment magnetic with
small rare earth magnets. This is so far problematic because the small
light ones do not hold the hull on well enough, YET. Still trying to
work it out, but working on a first time aircraft makes problems fun.
Now I realize what drives Burt Rutan. Regards, Ed Mate
