I do not know who exactly will recieve this but i assumed this would be
the best adress to write to. Perhaps if you can not answer my question you can
direct me to somebody who does.
I am 14 years of afe and therefore my much of my schedule is made for me
much in advance. For me to attened a Maxi Men competion (as I wish to
eventually) I would need to know well in advance. Therefore, I would like to kn
ow when
next years (2005) maxi men will be.
Thank You

information would be appreciated. Also other sources of building
materials.

To all SEN readers.
Recently, I received an inquiry about NFFS publications from Amos Hadas of
Israel. I opened the email and inadvertently deleted it. I need to have a
reader
pass this note to him to re-send the inquiry to me.
If someone knows Amos's email address, I would appreciate it if you would
send it to me.
Thanks for your help,
Bob Stalick, NFFS Publications Services
The Season is starting ...

Hello Everyone,
Well its about that time guys. Pull out the aluminum tail booms, dusty
front ends, and the geared motors. It starts all over again in just a
few short weeks . So its about time to go to the store and buy the
Gatorade and sunscreen. Well its just two more weeks before the first
contest of the year in Eloy and I couldn't be happier. I'm sure that
every Free Flighter is at least a bit excited to begin a new Free flight
year. Now I know that some of your guy's year has already started out
very well because the Trojans won, but for those who believe football
is meaningless, lets consider the upcoming Free Flight season. Pretty
much the same besides minor adjustments to the Schedule which is
making Wagel a primary target for a couple of contests. Well for me its
a bit different because we are sending a few brave souls to France for
the Jr. World champs and of course my favorite thing. My first open finals
competition. What could be better than flying fourteen rounds to see if
you get to go to another continent to fly Model Airplanes? I can't really
think of anything better except if the Jaguars won the superbowl. But I'm
getting off track. Last year I wrote a letter in the beginning of the year
that gave people some enjoyment. I'm hoping that this will do so
as well. I'm also thrilled that I feel the same way about free flight
that I did in the beginning of last year. So in concluding I hope
everyone is scrambling for the number for motel 6's phone number because
contest are coming up and you wouldn't want to pass up a lovely stay at
a motel 6 for a weekend am I right? Well its time for me to go build a
catapult glider that will stay in the air for about 5 seconds(isn't
this sport great?). So I will leave you with the words that I
live by on the flying field.

News of Frank Zaic

Frank Zaic in Guatemala [SAMTalk] >> In a message dated 12/30/2003 =

It was a wonderful surprise to receive a long letter and photos from
Carmen Zaic. She tells much about life in Guatemala after they moved
there from LA at the end of 2002. This year Frank was awarded a special
medal by FAI , the International Aeronautical Federation . He could not
attend the ceremony in Poland, the medal was received there by Dr Julio
Quevedo from the Aeromodelling Club in Guatemala. The attached photo
shows Dick Bertrand, also from the Guatemalan Aeromodelling Club, Frank
Zaic and Dr Quevedo in the re-enacting of the FAI ceremony in Guatemala
City.
Frank is well at 91 and has been totally integrated in Carmen's
extended family. They seem to have made the right choice at their age
and have much company, support and love from all concerned.
I wished to share this information with you as I know that for many of
us Frank has been a good friend and one of the greatest modellers ever.
Valley fever

Can any readers advise if the chances of catching Valley Fever are increased
or decreased at Lost Hills in February compared to the Autumn, or perhaps
non-existent.
Peter Tribe
[Pete,
I'm no medical authority .. but Valley Fever is spread by
mold in the dust. This is much less to even non-existant
in the winter i.e. at the time of the MaxMen.
For whatever it's worth for those who have not been to
the Maxmen - Lost Hills is completely different that at the
'normal' October time of the year. There is even green grass
on the field! and the thermals condition are much milder.]
Rubber properties

Stretch tests of Tan Rubber.
Preparing rubber for the new flying season I did some comparative tests with
Tan II of Oct.1999, Tan II of Aug.2001 and Tan Super Sport of March 2003.
Not very scientific, just stretch testing of ready-made 30g strands of about
325mm length. The '99 was 1/16th coming to 54 strands, the others 1/8th -
'01 with 26, '03 with 28 strands.
Tests were done in my workshop at about 22°C and outside at -5°C.
The results are interesting. Stretching all 3 were pretty even. Releasing
the tension showed marked differences: SP dropped far below the other two,
even though I did not hold max tension for lon, only for about a minute to
note the numbers.
The difference between SP and T2 between putting tension in and releasing
was even more marked with the low temperature tests.
The results confirm my feeling: winding SP is quite similar to T2, the
flight is not up to the performance. And this gets worse with low
temperatures.
So maybe the manufacturer should also check for the hysteresis properties.
(If anybody wants the data and curves, contact me and I will mail them as
.xls or .pdf-files).
Successful New Year to all of you!

Weather at Eloy today was very nice - got there about 9:20 to see virtually
zero wind + mid-weight coat weather. We flew until about noon when it became
shirtsleeve temps plus a bit of a breeze. If this holds until 17-18-19 JAN 04
for the SW Regionals, we'll all have a great time. See SWR info at:
www.aalmps.com/04info.htm
Tried my Playboy Sr/Fox .35/RC OT for the first time today. Even I can fly
this one! It's about a 15 yr old Fox that was prev used by me for CL Ringmaster
fun stunting. Mixed up some 10% nitro/25% oil [mostly castor], which proved to
run OK. Used an 11X4 TF Power Prop and got some nice but easily managable
climbs. Tried a 10X4 Zinger which made more noise but didn't go as high -
planning to try 10X6 next time plus maybe 25% nitro. Yes, it will fly OK at 56
ounces
so you can put one together with spruce/pine spars, epoxy, nails, etc so you
won't have to add so much ballast - mine has 13 ounces of 1/8" solid solder at
about the CG.
The Jimmie Allen Bluebird for Ed Shilen's electric unlimited rc event worked
better/quieter this week - evidently the pinion gear was coming loose all
through last week's trials. Still not competitive, but kind of fun anyhow.
I'll be busy at SW Regionals AMA FF officials area for Saturday and Sunday,
but hope to get to RC OT on Monday for the above events. John Patton will be
assisting me, but he hopes to get to RC OT to fly 'C' glow - and elec wakefield
with the Duplex.
