Any old rubber?

I have been using grey FAI rubber for most of the research that I have
undertaken over the past years . Last evening, the two remaining motors
gave up the ghost with two broken strands each. As both had already 7 and 9
knots, I remade the two into one complete using the longest stretches
between knots to tie up the new(!) motor.
The reason for this email is a request. Does anyone have a pound or hank oof
this grey FAI 3/16 that i could buy, please as i find it ideal for testing.
Half turns gives quite a strong burst so simulating full power and thus
eliminating the need for a much larger field to test fly. I mostly use the
parks in the city. I would be willing to cover mailing costs also.

Oh the 2 edge sword of the America Cup. On the sharp side, the goal of
promoting FAI FF by offering a substantial reward for those willing to travel
to FAI FF contests and flying against the best sportsmen has done much to
build participation across the 30 AmCup contests.
On the dull side, participation seems to be down on the non-AmCup contest.
This past weekend saw another absolutely beautiful Lost Hills weekend. 8 F1A fl
yers, 2 F1B, 1 F1C, 2F1G and 3 F1H. Respectible numbers for most contest, small
by Lost Hills expectations. Those that did come, came to practice and some cam
e to collect Team Selection Finals qualification points such as Jim Farmer (Pho
enix AZ) who placed 3rd-- beating me with a model I loaned him! On Saturday nig
ht, we had a wonderful barbeque and enjoyed some Hector Diez, Paso Robles home
made wine as we shared stores of the 1989 W.C. in Argentina. Many of us hope to
repeat this experience in 2005.
Ken and Andy Bauer showed up Saturday mid-morning. Ken was itching to try his
FF discus launched glider in thermal condition. Ken and Brian have been flying
a RC Vasily discus launched model between rounds at the SCAT annual.
Ken utilized similar components from Vasily to construct the FF version.
He increased the
stab area, decreased the rudder size (still looks large by FF standards).
He installed his F1A electronic timer to move the stab and rudder.
He also has a switch in the "launch peg" on the left wing tip.
Ken made many flights at the local schoolyard to get the timing and deflection
set up. Ken said that the RC experience was invaluable and timed the RC input
to estiblish a baseline for the FF program. He only stuck the FF model in the
ground "only" a couble of times getting the timing / delfections perfected.
What I found interesting is the large amount of right rudder to counter the left yaw
is held for a very short time [~.3 sec]. The bunt deflection is not as extreme
as an F1A.
The first launch looked like a RC controlled launch. We told Ken to keep is han
ds away from his pockets! The next launch was off to the left, the next to the
right. Launch timing / release is critical. Initially the model looked like it
was on the verge of spinning-- I'm not sure how Ken resolved this- he may have
reduced or eliminated the fast glide stab / rudder setting.
Ken flew for several hours and got better and better launches. I saw several fl
ights climbing in a thermal. In fact he piggybacked one of my F1A flights.
I believe we witness the change of an event-- like what the bunt did to F1A at
the 1991 W.C. or the birth of a new event.

Roger, please post this in the newsletter. Some guys have had a problem
getting accommodations for our meet in the Chestertown Motels listed in our
flyer. The following motels on route 50/301 have rooms available:
Comfort Inn at Kent Narrows, Grasonville, MD (410) 827-6767 has 45 rooms and
19 suites available. also 1-800-828-3361. 26 miles from the field.
Holiday Inn Express, near Kent Narrows, Grasonville, MD (410) 827-4454
Has a few doubles and singles left. 25 miles from field. A bit pricy.
Sleep Inn, at Grasonville, MD (410) 827-5555 has a few doubles and singles
left. 22 miles from field. Also a bit pricy.
Holleys Motel, Grasonville, MD (410) 827-8711 Has a restaurant (diner
style). More reasonable, similar to Super Eight/truck stop. 21 miles.
Chesapeake Motel, Grasonville, MD (410) 827-7272 Similar to Holleys.
21 miles to field.
When comming to the field from any of the above remember to stay on route
301 north when route 50 splits off to Easton. Stay on 301 until route 19
crossover, make a right, past silo to Carter road, right again, then follow
the map on the flyer. Any problems or for further information give me a
call. Joe Wagner (410) 778-3933.

Hello everyone,
I have been looking at various receivers for Free flight models recently,
and am
wondering if anyone has any experience with the Australian made “VK3YNG
Foxhunt
Sniffer”. It may have some advantages (over traditional receivers) when
determining the
range of the model, but I just wanted to know how well this works in
practice.
If anyone has any experience with this receiver type, please let me know.

since f1p got the nickname puppy should we call f1Q the Quiet event
sorry I couldn't resist.
on a serious note: the notion of adding a series resistor to the motor
circuit has I believe several problems, first off trying to measure the
resister in the model will be troublesome and most cd's probably dont
have a suficiently accurate Ohm meter to measure the resister. it would
also be very easy to shunt out all or part of the resister after
checking it. and most cd's probably would not be able to trace out all
the wiring to verify that. The other major problem is that most of the
really good electric motor setups that i have seen latelly are of the ac
voltage type. they have typically a controller that changes the voltage
from a two wire dc input to a three wire ac signal. now the question is
where do you want to put the resister. in the dc side or the ac side ?
on the ac side it would most likely take three resisters.
and probably cause other problems. on the dc side it is not technically
in series with the motor it is in series with the converter/controller.
I would think that the voltage would be enough of a limiting rule. I
agree that the weight and capacity is going to change dramatically in
the future however that applies to f1c as well.you dont see many rossi's
any more. of course not just as the engines have gotten better so will
the electric motors and when they do then lower the voltage of the
bateries that are allowed. the wattage or V/A will be equal you can't
get more watts without increasing the volts or current and if the volts
are the same then the current will increase and that will take larger
capacity bateries and that means more weight. so there you have it,
somewhere for the nuts and volts guys to experiment. dont make the rules
so stringent that there wont be any experimenting room left.
Katmar Products - Contest-grade balsa

Katmar informed me yesterday of a delay in the supply of contest-grade
balsa.
The mill that supplies the sheet stock did not receive any suitable
contest-grade lumber in its latest shipment and does not expect a
further delivery for 6-8 weeks. Hopefully, that forthcoming consignment
will include appropriate raw balsa but that, of course, cannot be
forseen.
With her customary integrity Kathleen Dunn has purchased a small
quantity of contest wood from another supplier to allow her to fulfill
existing orders; however she has paid more for this than she is charging
her customers so obviously a switch to this secondary source is
impractical unless prices are raised appreciably - a step she does not
wish to contemplate.
Her existing stocks of contest grade will be sold in a 'first-come'
basis and it is requested that anyone wishing to place an order first
contact her to ascertain availability of sizes requested.
Delivery of orders of 'regular' balsa will, of course, continue as
usual.
Kathleen hopes that everyone will appreciate that the situation is out
of her hands in this short term instance, and maintain their custom when
she has full stocks of contest balsa once again - hopefully, in the near
future.

this instance a phone call might be the most practical way of
ascertaining if your balsa needs are available.

Roger:
I don't recall seeing either an Am Cup schedule or a World Cup schedule =
this year in the SEN or... Do you know where I can find them? Since I =
will be in Germany for 10 weeks this summer, I would like to attend a =
contest or two.
Thanks, George
[George
the FAI schedule can be found on their web site www.fai.org
we do not publish the AmCup as we do not get it
reliably enough from the organizers - but it can
be found on the NFFS web site freeflight.org
Controlling Your Impulses
=========================

Impulse towhooks are basically quite old, I have been using them for over 30
years until I stopped flying glider. The basic system (as described in the
Symposium report 1974, p.49 ff) is extremely simple and good for beginners.
The limitation is- as described in the mailings - the sensitivity to
unwanted shock waves. They come not only from stepping on the line, wet
lines not sliding cleanly, but also from the line getting snagged on buttons
or the like of your clothing, getting caught in shrubs on the ground, or
even from line tangles. I therefore always used an automatic reel (rubber or
later electric) to take up the line slack while towing.
Makarov's is, however, a bit different as it uses an unlatching mechanism
inside the plane and is set up for much higher tensions and therefore is not
as sensitive as my old system. Still you will have to be extremely careful
of any snags to the line you pulled in. And I fully agree that it would be
deadly to have two different systems in your box!

Roger,
Seems like the latest SEN is also corrupted, at least the web site
version. The problem seems to be in that Taipo's posting, there are a
number of extraneous less than symbols in the body of the text. That renders
the html file "undisplayable" from that point on. No doubt it there is
exactly the same problem in the previous issue of SEN.

[Bob
thanks for pointing this out - we have corrected the version
that is on line.]
