Actually, any digital timer, running a servo as an actuator, would also
work as pulse generator to run a brushless motor via a speed controller.
After all, with RC equipment a speed controller is run as if it was a
servo. You may need to program in a spesific starting sequence as the
modern speed controllers are rather fancy, using self calibration and some
safety features to avoid starting the motor by accident, but this is just
a matter of writing a few lines of code. I did such a modification to my
F1B digital timer, so that one servo is running the tail feathers as
usual, the other connector starts and stops an electric motor via a speed
controller. The nice feature with this approach is that you get to power
for the timer from the motor battery...
It would be easier to wire a brushed motor by just a switch between the
battery and motor, but this may not be good for the power train. A
reduction gear and a big prop have quite some inertia, producing a
significant stress to the system if power is just turned on instantly,
Thus I think that even if the rules went to claim brushed motors only, it
still would be better to use a pulse generator and a speed controller to
start and stop the motor, to turn power on and off gradually.

[No one has approached me about a BlackMagic timer for
F1Q - we could do that if required ...

For information: the French FFTC has released a provisionnal national
formula:
- Total area: 32-34sq.dm.
- Max loading 50g/sq.dm.
- Brushed motor, max type 480 race (brushless motors prohibited)
-Max 7 elements 1.2volts (Ni-Cd,Ni-Mh)
- Direct drive prop (no gear)
- 12 amps fuse automotive type
-Motor run:25sec.
-Flight duration: 180sec.
I understood that this formula already exists in the Netherlands.

We have the two F1P models ready to cover and decided to look at Oracover. We c
ompared it to Icarex and here is what we found. The wings that we covered are o
f typical carbon construction, albeit, somewhat heavy because this was our firs
t shot at the F1P design.
Spars were big (1/4") and the D boxes where probably too wide (Made them to the
high point of the airfoil for maximum spar depth). The 205 square inch wing pa
nel (410 sq inch total). weighed in at 45 grams each uncovered. Thru Hobby Lobb
y, we purchased the solid color red and yellow. The price was about $9 a roll a
nd delivery was prompt.
The first thing I found out was that it shrunk quite a bit, which made getting
wrinkles out pretty easy. However, when I attempted to cover to a middle rib, i
t badly warped the rib. So, we needed to cover from main rib to tip. This worke
d out just fine. Weighing the wing, we came up to 64 grams. Our thought was tha
t this was quite heavy.
Took a wing from model number two (same size, same weight) and covered it with
Icarex. Total weight of this panel came up to 61.5 grams! We were surprised, ne
edless to say. John and I had talked about recovering the Oracover covered wing
, but felt that the 8 gram difference wasn't worth it. We don't know about the
durability verses the Icarex, but it is worth the experiment. BTW, we covered t
he undercambered model with the Oracover and had no problems sticking it to the
undercamber.
Thought you may be interested in this!
