Dear Roger

If possible, please put this message on SCAT
Thank you very much

Dear Free Flight friends

In this very moment, we are in the end of April.
The well known von Hafe Cup is in the first days of June 2004. A short time
And we are not receiving the application forms from the free flight fellows
Believe me, you are the supporters for von Hafe Cup. Without your presence,
free flight will loose another international meeting.
Think about and send your booking as soon as possible.
You know that in Portugal you will find friendship, good conditions, good
wine and food.
Tank you very much

[ciam-f1] Dr. BENEDEK
=====================
From: REE, Andras

Dear Friends,

I have the very sad obligation to inform you that a great name in aeromodelling,
Dr. Gyorgy (Georges) BENEDEK passed on April 19 in the
83rd year of his fruitful life.
He started his activity at the end of the thirties
in outdoor and indoor free flight,
performed several airfoil tests and designed his world wide famous and used
"B" airfoil series. Some of these airfoils are still used.
He was successful competitor as well, mainly in free flight, but later
he was active
also in control line. He was one time world champion in F1B team, made several
dozens of international and national records, won dozens of national
championships in several classes. One of his international record
(No.103, open glider, height of 2364 m) is still valid since 1948.
He founded in 1957 and led through about 5 years the workshop that has
made the successful MOKI engines (it is still producing big size engines).
Then through about 25 years he was officially forbidden to take part
in our sport and hobby because of political reasons. In 1987, when the later
political changes were already in the air he was rehabilitated
and become active again on the field
of CO2 gas engine development and establishing the F1K class.
He was holder of the FAI-CIAM Antonov Diploma for his technical innovations.
Recently he has produced new engines, made engine tests and preparations for the
coming contest season, still able to run after his CO2 models - of
course somehow slower than before.

He was not an easy personality as one can often learn with great
names. He will be missing forever from the fields, but we all
will remember for him and many of us will use the fruits of his
aeromodelling and engineering activity for a long time.

With sad regards

Dr. Andras Ree

Dear Andras,

I had the privilege to meet Georges BENEDEK at the opening ceremony for
the 1988 Free Flight Championship in Domsod. We could talk for a while,
and we took a picture with him and the French team.
His airfoils are so famous that he will be remembered on every free
flight field at every contest.
On behalf of the FEderation Francaise d'Aeromodelisme and all
French Free Flighters, I would like to express my condolences to all
Hungarian Modellers.

Best regards,
Pierre Chaussebourg

Dear Andras,

I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Gyorgy Benedek. His work,
especially in the area of airfoils for free-flight aircraft, has been
invaluable to competition flyers in all classes and all over the world and
he will, I know, be much missed.

In 1980 I had the pleasure of interviewing Gyorgy for a US National Free
Flight Society Special Award, recognising the debt that worldwide
free-flight owed him. For him to have been denied the possibility of
competing for political reasons for so long must have been almost
unbearable and many of us were delighted when he made a return to
competitive free-flight some years later.

Please pass on my deepest sympathies to his family and to the Hungarian
model flyers. His work and his airfoils will be his memorial, soaring above
the world's flying fields far into the future.

Best wishes,

Martin Dilly

Dear Andras,

Thank you for this news albeit sad news. I was unaware of Dr Benedek's
involvement in control line but as a dabbler in things other than F2 I have bui
lt,
flown and competed (not very well) with towline gliders using his airfoils
which I laboriously plotted from the coordinates he published. I would like to

send the appreciation of the F2 subcommittee and all F2 aeromodellers to Dr
Benedek's family, Hungarian modelers, and you for this gentleman's
accomplishments and contributions and condolences for the loss of this man.

best regards,
Laird (doc)

Guys

A great pioneer has passed on. I saw him in 1958 when he so nearly won the
Wakefield Cup. Who has not used a Benedek 'foil on at least one of their
models. I have used the B-6356-b for many years and found it to be
brilliant.

I'm looking for a couple of the discontinued Seelig single function DT
timers to use in some "vintage" F1A models. Alberto Dona (Hobby Club) sent
me one recently, but I still need more. Doug Galbreath doesn't have them.
Please let me know if you have one that you could sell, or pass this on to
anyone else who might.

Can you add this to my email below. Thanks.

Also, for the same "classic" F1A's, I would welcome any suggestions for how
to rig up a simple auto-stab arrangement. Right now the models have circle
tow with zoom rudder, and a stab that stays in glide position. The stab is
pulled down by the DT line that loops over the head of a nylon adjusment
screw in the stab trailing edge. The screw extends through the trailing
edge from the top, with the lower end resting on a small plywood platform on
the boom. What I want is something that will lift or prop up the back of
the stab for tow, like a bunt roller does, but with a simpler mechanism. I
was thinking along the lines of maybe a shim between the plywood platform
and the screw that is somehow pulled out or pivoted out. Or somenting more
bunt-roller like, but still using the same stab pull-down set up, and simple
materials/construction. Why bother you ask? It's because my sons are
trying to learn circle tow with these models for now, and this should make
the towing more fun and less work. Lack of fun can definitely be a deal
breaker with them.

Simple magic electronic D/T Timer in the summer]

Rolling tubes
=============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Does anyone know of a reliable method of rolling paper tubes, please? I have
been forced into this old means of tube manufacture because I couldn't find
alum tubes for 2mm carbon rod for my latest tailless Cdh. an article on
which will appear in this year's Symposium.

I tried rolling the paper dry for the first revolution then applied the
white glue but they ended with a rather loose fit on the rod. The i tried
rollibng the paper dry for all but the last rev but the same result. Then I
tried rolling them wiith Cyano but again too loose. Then back to the white
glue. I rolled the first two or three revs with the gluue and wauted a
minute or so. The unrolled it and re-rolled this time tryibng to keep the
tube as tight as possible to the rod but the results are inconsistent.
Anyone know any better?

Mike S

Roger,
I would appreciate hearing from others on how Icarex to Icarex fabric patches
are best accomplished. That is, what adhesive and how much fabric overlap?
It seems a shame to recover a whole panel just because damage to a few ribs
required removal of a portion of the covering. I'm sure that others besides
me would like to know the answer, so please reply to SEN rather directly to me.

Thanks,

Old rubber
==========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Hello, John

Received the 130gm of 3/16 rubber OK. Thanks very much.
I have made up one motor to try out. While making it up, it felt quite soft
like the oriiginal 3/16 that I remember buying some many years ago. However,
that rubber over time without any special storing in freezers etc has
gradually become quite powereful so there is perhaps an ageing going on
i.e., the rubber has not been cured enough originally, for it is my belief
that if rubber was produced as accurately as we make our models, then each
batch would be very close to all the others and we would not have to do any
testing! During the life of my old 3/16, I have found that as the rubber
during flying seemed to lose power(the model not climbing as before) then a
re-making of the motor (particularly to tie knots) running it under the hot
water tap for up to 60 seconds appeared to rejuvenate it!!!! The model now
climbing as before!

So much for previous experience. The motor from your package I did not test
indoors. First wind up felt quite strong and the climb OK. But succeeding
flights showed a very flat cruise. I am reserving my judgement at the moment
as the park where I fly has strong vertical currents and these may be
responsible for this lack of climb. However, as I increased the turns up to
150,(50%) there did not seem to be an increasing torque effect, i.e., the
resistance to turning the prop did not increase.

I will therefore on this first motor clean off the lubricant and subject it
to the hot water treatment to see whether that has any effect. Secondly, I
will continue to fly at different times at different locations to find out
if the field is responsible for the low cruise, and keep you posted.

regards
Mike S

Q magic
===========
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Roger,
Tapio Linkosalo has suggested that a digital timer could serve as the pulse
generator to operate the controller for a brushless motor in F1Q. You
replied "No one has approached me about a Black Magic timer for F1Q - we coul
d do that if required ..."
Well, I'm approaching you! If this is a feasible modification for a Black
Magic timer, then I think these would be the requirements:
1) Power for the timer to be taken from the battery pack. Since the pack
voltage might be up to around 12 volts, perhaps a zener diode needs to be
inserted in the timer to prevent overloading it.
2) Ability, via programming, to start the motor, quickly run it up to full
speed, then start the motor run timer as the model is launched, and finally
shut down the motor, perhaps with a run-down period, to assist trimming if
moveable surfaces are not used on the model.
3) A separate timer output, to control a servo to wiggle wings, adjust the
rudder, adjust the stab, etc., if such things are needed, and finally release

the DT.
Is it possible to produce an F1Q-friendly Black Magic timer along these
lines? If F1Q becomes a reality, then such a timer would solve a whole host
of
problems, and BM would have a new market. Lets just hope that brushless
motors will be allowed.
Jack Reid.

[Jack

we could certainly make one - we do have some commitmemts ahead
of you in the queue!! - It is not too different from what we have already]

Timing
=======
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

When I used to attend some of the local contests in France in the early
eiiighties, I found that the timing was done in a unique way. When you
registered at control, you received a card to record your score. For each
event, there was a box below the overall score recording billboard. You
then placed your card at the REAR of the cards already there in the box and
waited for the others in front of you to be timed. Only when all were
processed and your card was in the front, was your name called to get ready
to fly.
As can be seen, if you were anxious to fly, you could time some of those in
front of you until there were perhaps two or three waiting. You could then
slip away and get ready so when the call came you could launch straight
away!!! Worked well.
Looked like a good sytem.

Mike S
