Roger, Much to my embarrassment, I find that I have indeed made a
mistake on the Team Selection Finals results. Ken Happersett's time on
the final flight was 558 sec., not the 478 sec. that I earlier
reported. This puts him ahead of John Warren, in second place. The team
remains the same. I apologize for any consternation is may have caused
anyone. George Batiuk

To All Free Flighters who have ordered the 2004 British Free Flight Forum
from NFFS Publications.
I want t apologize for the long delay in sending you your order. The 04
Forums in stock were sold out immediately after Walt Rozelle published his
review in the NFFS Digest. Another order was placed in early August for more
copies. Sometime in later August, these copies were sent. As of this date,
October 19, 2004, they have not been received.
I have all of the envelopes addressed and ready to send when the 04 Forums
arrive here at NFFS Publications office. I have been expecting them to arrive
for days.
I appreciate your patience in this matter.
Thanks again,
Bob Stalick, NFFS Publications Services

Help, help Hank Cole are you out there? Or anyone else know about a
rubber stick job he designed 1n the 50's, 1/16" sheet diamond fuselage,
about 200 sq. in. tapered wings, davis No.5 airfoil. I want to find the
plans. It was in one of our magazines, can't remember which one. Watch
for my Simpo 2005 article. Hermie you inspired me.

Luddite Looks Again
===================

Following his sucess in finding one old style Bauer electronic timer - are
there any more by the way - the squire of Taft, Peter Allnutt is now
looking for coordinates of the Lizyura LA01489. This has been used by some
Russian sportsmen. If you can send them to SEN we will geth them to Peter.

It seems that everyone else who flys F1B is having their say on the 30g rule
so here are my thoughts.
When we changed from 40g to 35g a few complained they would not be able to
max the first round. Personally I noticed no difference and locally we all kep
t
flying with those who usually made the first round max continuing to do so.
When we dropped to 30g I decided to build new models with a few more gadgets,
a shorter motor tube and more AA hardware. Guess what - they go better than
my old 40g models ever did. The point is if you have less power to play with
there is more encouragement to improve other aspects of the model and because
there is less weight in the rubber you can substitute that weight into design
advantage. FF for me is a design challenge and as nothing else stays the same

we have to adapt to these changes.
The other problem that most of us face are a lack of flying sites. Trying
to find an area to fly close to urban development is almost impossible. The
limited areas we do find are hardly suitable for much over 3 minutes. I thought
this was a common problem and was partly the reason we dropped the amount of
rubber to reduce the performance. If we can't achieve 5 minutes with SS and
we don't have a flying site that will allow for 5 minute flights why not drop
the max back to 3 minutes for all rounds. Personally I thought the next step
may have been to reduce the rubber weight to 25g and I suspected at first that

all these complaints about the lack of performace from SS may have been a way
of preventing this from happening. If we moved to 25g would I stop flying F1B

- No way . It 's not a rule change that makes the difference but rather
having somewhere good enough to fly.
John Lewis (F1B flyer for the last 30 years )

Roger,
Can you please post on the SEN site.

First I would like to thank all the people involved in running the finals
program, what a fantastic job done by all, your efforts have not gone
unnoticed!

I would like to congratulate all the new team members for the 2005 program and
best of luck at the World Champs! Excellent flying.

Next I would like to thank all the competitors at the Finals for providing me
with the utmost in competition. Since starting modeling as a young boy I
always loved the competition of free flight flying. The competition is what
drives me to goals I never thought possible, a man on a mission to try to
surpass every previous contest performance, always looking for ways to
implement and modify procedures. Free Flight provides the experience of
many applications that are used as lessons for life, and one of the greatest
opportunities to meet some of the nicest people
around the country (world) as you enjoy this sport. I came away with a
wealth of knowledge and it also showed me my deficient areas. Thanks for the
Challenge!

contest.

F1B rubber regs

I always maintained the best way to limit performance for F1
events was to limit wingspan. And I believe the CIAM completely
ignores all the flying except the World Champs, which I think
are about the least important goal for the rules. Healthy comps
from grassroots level to WC are ideal, and they drop the ball.

As for myself, I'd still like to be flying F1A except for
age/health issues, and would be very interested in F1B except
that over the years, I've bought several hundreds of dollars
worth of rubber, but it was always crap. It doesn't make me want
to buy more, let me tell you. Beyond that, I like what Rich
Blackam wrote...Thermals, Steve

AmCup and Patterson
===================

Oct. 2004 AmCup Update and Patterson Contest

Sorry for the lapse between AmCup reports but here is the latest to help
those at the top of the list to finalize their strategy for the year end
charge. I believe the Skyscraper annual was flown but I have not gotten
the results. This contest could be a key factor in two of the races.
Also, note-I estimated the bonus points for the USFFChamps. I was the CD
and wrote down the top 5 places but did not note the total number of
flyers-I'll make any correction needed once the official results are
published. I have incorporated all the corrections that have been feed
to me. Please continue to check your scores and notify me on any needed
corrections.

I'll take this opportunity to advertise and provide clarification about
the Patterson contest coming up on Nov 13-14, see SEN, Oct 14,2004-
issue #909 .
At the Sierra Cup contest last weekend, a flyer expressed his
displeasure in the Patterson contest format. He came back later in the
day and said several others he talked to were unhappy as well. I was
flying and did not care to track down any posssible miscommunication and
so I'll use this medium to make sure that the format is properly
understood.

Saturday, Nov13
The mini -events (including F1P) will be flown from 7:30 to 10:30, 5
(rounds, 45 minutes long).
The open events will then fly from 11:00 to 4:00 (5 rounds, 1 hour long
with the 5th round being a 5 minute max for all open events).
The mini event flyoffs will then be done starting at 4:15.

Sunday, Nov14
The open events will fly 5 more rounds, one hour long from 7:30 to
12:30. The 6th round (1st round max on Sunday) will be 4 min for F1A and
5 min. for F1B&C). Flyoff at 1:30 if needed.

We used this format last years and those there enjoyed it. The mini
event people like the idea of not being the late Sunday get away people.
The open only flyers like the later start that allows many to drive in
Saturday. Those that fly both events like the segmentation of the
events. The Organizers like the concept that 5 rounds are flown on
Saturday to insure we get an official contest in should the weather turn
bad on Sunday. SCAT has experimented through the years with various
contest formats and decided to return to the historic 10 round format
that set it apart from the standard 7 round contest. We have use of the
best flying field in the world and usually great weather-let's use it!
Please come and fly and enjoy this AmCup contest.

SuperSport and 30 grams

Roger:

A while back we discussed the need to eliminate the super max. At the
time it appeared to me that the published comments were almost 100% for
elimination. I too want it to go. But let us not forget that the purpose
of the super max in the first place was to reduce or eliminate the
problems involved with the "marathon" fly-offs that were becomming too
frequent. This is a legitimate concern. I believe the simplest solution
will be to simply replace the 5-minute super max with a 5-minute
extended max.I'm sure many will prefer a 4-minute extended max. Either
will be fine with me.

This said, I want to address the complaints about Super Sport rubber.
While I have only limited knowledge of how the new factory produces
rubber strip for our models, having been the source of Champion Rubber
from 1983 up until 1996 when I shut down Champion Model Products, I know
all the details of how the old "black" rubber was produced for me and Ed
Dolby. The biggest problem with the old rubber was the fact that that
factory had no intention or desire to address the matter of "energy
return". They simply claimed that the total sales of "model airplane
strip" was too small to justify the cost to do the R&D to develop
consistent high-energy strip. Consequently, there were enormous
variations from one batch to another. But in all batches, there were
considerable variations. I had to order 1000 lbs at a time. Trimming
losses and other factors would reduce what I received and was charged
for. When a new batch was made, the factory would actually mix four
batches. This was necessary because the mills in which the various
ingrediants were blended had a capacity of 250 pounds. The ingredients
that went into the 250 pounds could and would vary slightly.

We all are very fortunate that Ed Dolby found another factory that was
willing to develop consistent, high-energy batches. Under John Clapp's
urging, things have continued to improve.

But like the black rubber, the energy return varies throughout each
batch. The information I have is that this factory now requires John to
buy very large batches - much larger than what the old factory asked. So
the bottom line here is that we still need to test our motors and set
aside the best for our extended and fly-off rounds. I think I was
fortunate in that both the 10-lb boxes of October '03 and the April '04
Super Sport were quite good. Part of my October tended to break easily,
but that problem disappeared once I got past the splice. The bottom line
is that the Super Sport that I am presently using is only slightly
poorer that the good Tan II that I am holding in reserve. It is quite
capable of giving me 5-minute plus early morning flights. My son Martin
also is having very good success with these same batches of Super Sport.
I firmly believe that Bill Pudney and others, who are unhappy with Super
Sport, simply got a parts of batches that were below average in quality.

French Team Trials
==================

The French team trials were held in 16th and 17th of october on
farmlands some kilometers from usual Poitou venue.
7 flights with one 4 min.supermax each day, i.e. saturday afternoon and
sunday morning. The weather was rather unsettled:
from cloudy to bright sun, from dry to heavy showers some with
hailstones and then rolling thunder. The contest was
interrupted twice saturday afternoon (thanks C.D. it was a wise
decision). The W-SW breeze ranged from 2 to 6 m/s.
Finally it was a difficult but good and hardly fought contest.
Here are the results:

1) 2005 Senior WC in Argentina:
-F1A: Thierry MARILLIER 2561, Francois MOREAU 2550, Vincent CROGUENNEC
2522, Reserve Emmanuel RAGOT 2477.
-F1B: Lea MARQUOIS 2469, Guy BUISSON 2399, Francois DUCASSOU 2366,
Reserve Stephen JALLET 2329.
-F1C: Bernard BOUTILLIER 2572, Alain ROUX 2561, Michel REVERAULT 2418,
Reserve Laurent POUYADOU 2323.

2) 2005 Junior EC in Romania:
-F1A: Edgard BERNARD 2185, Boris BERNARD 2118, Samuel CESBRON 2101,
Reserve Murat FERSATOGLU 1816
(do not compare Junior and Senior scores, the number of flights was not
the same)
-F1B: No selection needed, unfortunately we have only 2 junior F1B
flyers, Lea being now senior.
The team will be made by Stephen JALLET and Benjamin MARQUOIS.

Rubber weight and other F1B amenities
=====================================

Good morning to all the free flyers around,
I followed with interest the little discussion about rubber and motor
weight.
There are a few surprising things, at least for me: some flyers say that
their models don't climb in a satisfying way with 30 gr, or even that they
could be "forced" to buy high performance models to use effectively such
low amount of energy.
I'm happy to confort them: I fly with my models (so no need to buy), they
perform in a satisfying way (so there is fun to fly them) and on top of it
you can even win the World Cup with them.

I understand that it is annoying to see that some people has still "old"
rubber, or that some people have "thermal machines", or that some people
retrieve by car or motorbike when I do it by foot, or that they can buy
models that I can not afford to buy, or that Mr X can run faster than me
and so is launching higher, and, please, have no doubts that I could go on
for a while.

Is the solution to ban "old" rubber or thermal machines, to force everyone
to retrieve by foot, to forbid commercial models and break the legs of Mr
X ?

Or is this part of the game, searching the market for rubber, investing in
it when it appeared interesting, or spending time and energy trying to
develop and learn to use a thermal machine, or retrieving the way one can,
buying what one likes, launching the way one is able to, and so on ?

At this moment we have a number of people asking for an increase in rubber
weight, and a few saying that we can happily stay where we are, so the
situation is a bit unbalanced.

My proposal is that I provide a number of people asking to reduce the
rubber weight, in order to balance the request, then staying where we are
will be the sensible decision.

In order not to forget all the interesting proposals of the last weeks,
let's put them a bit together.

It has been said that we could face the reduced performance with more
attention to thermal picking, and some suggestion about the use of colours
was also aired.

I would suggest that contest organizers be asked to provide thermals of
the correct size and strenght, suitably colored in order to equalise the
chances.
The correct colour for thermals should be clearly indicated at the
beginning of the year, this to avoid that people use thermals of previous
years, when size or strenght were more favourable.
This would prevent people from stocking on thermals, keeping them
refrigerated, according to the well known practice in free flight.

Kind regards,

Anselmo Zeri

Thanks to Alan McDonald for his donation in support of SEN .. also I
receievd a couple of
donation during the endless October in support of SEN - that I negected to
note down because of other distractions. So thanks very much to those
others, your support is appreciated.
