IMAC News

FLASH!-IMAC Annual Banquet and Elections. IMAC'S since 1911. I once again
succumbed to the call for President. The Banquet is next Sunday the 28th
and is as usual in conjunction with the Aeronuts. It will be noteworthy
because the only two surviving original members of the club will be together
again. Don Lockwood and Carl Carlson who is still a member and is coming from
California. He is also current member of the Black Sheep Model Club out
there. Don is a member here and our mentor.
A couple of noteworthy facts here are that Don had a photo of he and Carl
working together in the Manny Laird Factory on the Laird Super Solution
for Jimmy Dolittle to fly in the National Air Races in the Cleveland Air
Races. He was ahead late in the race when he caught fire and was nearly killed
landing it.
The other is that Carl Goldberg started the Aeronuts when he was thrown out
of the IMAC'S for using the hobby to make money. This was a big taboo
in the IMAC'S then. Also other facts of note that the IMAC'S was formed as a
modeling arm of the already notorious ILLINOIS AERO CLUB. Don showed
me a couple of IAC membership cards signed by the members, Victor Lougheed,
founder of Lockheed and a guy by the name of Boing also founder with his
brothers of that company. Interesting that aviation historical movies
do not mention the significant connection between these guys and the IAC.
Now I will shut up. Ed Mate

Rubber queries

Dear Mr. Morrell,
Recently I have started to fly some F1B.
I have been using some old Tan 2 rubber and have been making up 26
strand motors which work really well in my model. Soon I am going to
use some other Tan 2 that I think is from March 2002. Anyway this new
rubber is thinner than the old rubber by around .005".
Have you ever used this thinner rubber? If you have used it did you
make up your motors with more strands? I don't want to have to adjust
my model too much to use this rubber.
I would be very grateful if you or anyone else could assist me with
this.
With thanks,
Tim Harte.
[Tim
The best way around this is to make the motors up by length rather than
by number of strands. The thickness and width of the rubber can vary
so as a starting point when you get a new batch make the motors up to the
same length you did with the old rubber.

In SEN 787 for March 17, Chuck O'Neil wrote,"...Please inform me of
where I might purchase this publication if it is still in existence. BTW
the author was Lew Gitlow".
The book, Indoor Flying Models is still in print. You can reach Lew
Gitlow at: Indoor Model Supply, Box 2020, Florence, OR 97439.
phone number is: (541) 902-8508. I think it still sells for $22.00.

Flyoff Solicitation from Schroedter
====================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Here is a flyoff system that works regardless of the air temperature, speed,
or thermal activity. It can be flown any time of the day. One flight only.
Flyers have a ten minute to launch period. The max is 180 for senior classes
and 120 for junior classes. Time starts at launch and stops when the model
lands of its own accord, either gliding or DT. The person with a score
closest to the max is the winner. Second and third places are also determined
by the same method.

"new" winding

special rod it is inserted into model. >>
This "revolutionary method" has been commonly practiced with indoor models
for many years, both stick (not requiring special rod) and cabin (requiring
special rod.) However, F1D flyers in UK are currently installing a "blast
plate" to (try to) protect motor stick from blown motor from the time of
hookup to time just before launch. They believe this is the most
unpredictable and dangerous time (good batches of) Tan II will blow. For
outdoor, use of traditional blast tube already takes care of half this period
(up to prop hookup) but the "new method" would do nothing for the second
risky part (hookup to launch) until someone figures out an (outdoor) blast
tube that is removable after prop hookup.

Tim Goldstein has a great indoor site:
http://indoorduration.com
which not only has a link to Lew Gitlow's site (www.IndoorModelSupply.com)
where the book is still listed, but to a number of other sites + articles
from INAV, etc, etc. Good place to start.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Dear Roger:
I want to use 2 145mah Lithium Polymer batteries to power my Blackmagic =
Timers. The total output of the batteries is 7.4volts. Can I use the =
simple power regulator described on:
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/digital-electronics4.htm
or is it unnecessary?
Thanks,
Omer Erguner
[Omer
They can work with out a regulator - the timer has a regulator
however the risk is to the servos. Some
people have flown with them with no regulator.
I think a regulator that drops it to 6 volts would be
good. The Voltage at full charge of these batteries is over 4
volts each, so a total of 8 volts]

A New Way of Winding?
Winding the rubber motor outside the fuselage was used by Joe Erhardt back
in1930, when he won the Wakefield Cup.

1. Pleased to see that Mike has sent you the immediate info from the CIAM
meeting - it was good to have Mike attend the meeting.
2. Stepan Stefanchuk's approach to winding motors outside the model might be
"revolutionary" compared to common practice, but this was one of the
attrributes of the Croydon loading tube system described by John Mabey in
the November 1970 Free Flight News and used by Croydon flyers during the
next 2 decades. It was normally used as a loading and winding tube system
but one of the options was winding outside the model. Ocassionally I did
this while waiting for lift with a wound motor and wanting to fly one
specific model. Wind a new motor while the first motor was still in the
model ready to launch if required. Then unload the tired wound motor from
the model and load the freshly wound new one and be ready to wait for lift
again within a minute.
