The Almost Wright Stuff

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Dec 17th 1903 and the Wright Brothers.

Both Thayer Syme AND the Windy Sock have posted my Wright Bros replica twin
pusher on their web sites. The model is called Almost Wright 1903 and is NOT
scale, but everyone will recognize the inspiration. Thanks guys.

It's easy to fly, but a pain to wind and handle, and has more drag than you
can believe. The airplane weights 6 or 7 grams, still I can get only 45 to 60
seconds out of it using 2 loops of 1/8 Tan II. (I told you it had lots of
drag!) It does glide down with this power, but the L/D is not much.

( brokenspar is back in the email world. Returning from
a hiatus thrust upon me by equipment failure.
I can tell you that I had an accumulation of email of over 700 items.
110 delt with penis enlargement. ( There are no secrets )...)

May I ask..... if the book " Building and Flying Indoor Model
Airplanes " by Ron Williams, is somehow... somewhere available...

I sent my copy to a man who was in prison.
We corresponded for a little while, and I remember
that I was to send material to make 6 inch hand launch gliders.
I never did that....

I wonder....

New winding method
==================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Stepan Stefanchuk has passed on some interesting info on his method winding.
A photo showed the use of slightly more than a half tube being used compared
with the full blast tube used currently. I asked him about this and whether
he had tried the full tube and he replied:

- the rubber can be inserted faster with the semi-tube;
- when the semi-tube is removed, it is not necessary to use a long wire;
- condition of the rubber is easily observed during winding, in
particular whether any strands have broken.

He also gives some data on the weather connditions at this year's Holiday on
Ice contest to which he drove. 10cm of snow with wind of 1-2m/sec, some
sunshine with VERY weak vertical air movement. No problem to get 3 minutes
in F1B but this affected the flyoffs.

He lives about 70kms from the Polish border. He used a VW-Transporter which
he says is very good for long trips. So 70 km in Ukraine, then 1,000 in
Poland where there are no high speed roads which is very tiring. Then one
night on the ferry followed by 800 km in Sweden and Norway to get to the
contest. Easy driving as the roads are good with not too many cars. He
estimates that he can go only 800km a day in the Ukraine as the roads are
not so good. Whew!!!!

Norcal Free Flight Champs Update
================================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here's the latest update for the Oakland Cloud Dusters sponsored NorCal Free Fl
ight Champs. Note that it is scheduled for the 3rd and 4th of May, not the end
of April as printed in Free Flight, the NFFS digest.
A couple of changes from the previous year: We are adding .020 Payload, all of
the Classic Gas events, and F1P. We are dropping Slow Open Power plus the HLG a
nd HandHeld Catapult events will be flown from a "Pig Pen". Also, we are planni
ng to have a one-hour lunch break at noon on Saturday. If we have to change the
FAI line, this will help us accomodate unforseen circumstances.
I'll have to check with Jim Parker about the F1P rules. Currrently, we have it
listed as flyable on both days but we may have to move it to either Saturday or
Sunday only.
Camping/Campers/Motorhomes are allowed on the field but we will probably want t
o orient the parking east to west (perpendicular to Sunrise Blvd. Morning fligh
ts always seem to head towards Sunrise Blvd.
More and more junior flyers are showing up and we would like to solicit attende
es to donate kitsbalsa wood, engines, or other free flight paraphernalia, so sp
read the word.

Micafilm - Wanted and Wanting

Roger, for SEN

Coverite has discontinued Clear Micafilm per their product support person. I
had ordered and received 18 rolls (65 inch long) for M&K in Feb. At that time,
Towerhobby had discontinued the clear 15 foot rolls. Today I went to order
some for Peter Allnutt and found the 65 inch rolls were also discontinued.
I contacted Coverite via email and received a reply that in fact that Clear
Micafilm has been discontinued.

Peter Allnutt is interested in buying some-contact him at 661-763-5039 or this
weekend at L.H.

M&K have a lighter weight Icarus covering. Dallas and I just recovered his
Long model with it. About 1-2 gr heavier than the Micafilm that it replaced.
They have it only in white. It can be identified by the rectangular pattern
as opposed to the square pattern of the Icarus currently being used.

I currently do not have any of the light weight Icarus for sell or a price but
should hear from M&K soon.

Thermals, JIM

March'03 CIAM Plenary meeting
=============================

Roger,

Sorry for the late reporting response.

There was not a lot of response to the questionaire I placed on the SEN
in February that outlined the issues before the FF Tech Subcom. In any
event, I used what we gathered as direction for my representation of the
US position on the issues. All of the issues passed (were accepted by
vote) except two:

1) the F1J/F1P aspect which was sent back to the FF subcommittee for
further review
- motor run, fuel constituents, and maximum flight time for F1J
- the power event F1P for junior championships and status of the
chosen class

2) and an assertion by Sweeden to add a "board of judges" for world cup
competitions which would have acted as another set of jury members - the
committee thought this to be redundant and the Plenary sent it back to
relavant committees.

Two special notes :

1) Argentina will host the 2005 FF WCs (F1A,B and C). Daniel Iele was
quite pleased with the success to secure this bid over the Ukraine
proposal. I think it is a good choice.

2) Frank Zaic won the FAI Gold Medal for Aeromodeling - the highest
accolade possible within the FAI for model aviation. We are delighted at
this seemingly long lasting oversight. (Martin Dilly started the Zaic
movement by noting the great oversight and encouraged the US to take
some action and remedy the situation. With Dave Brown's encouragement, I
wrote the affadavit to the FAI on Zaic's behalf. It was a well deserved
accolade for Frank Zaic and long overdue.)

The issues that the US placed "into the FAI rules business mill" in
November '02 won't be worked over until March 2005. Please remember that
this is because there is a rule change "freeze" in place. The cycle for
basic changes to the rules of the primary events (F1A,B andC) is 4
years. The only way the rules can be changed inside of the 4 year cycle
is for safety, noise or clarification purposes. The next basic rule
change cycle is January 2006 so the intermediate annual meetings that
take place will discuss the issues before the FF Technical committee but
final action won't occur until the March 2005 Plenary meeting which will
have effect the following January (2006). Provisional events like F1J
can be changed every year.

The main concerns of the US FAI community have lately revolved around
two points: 1) what the US has termed the "supermax" - and also 2) the
newly instituted F1P entry level event. From what I can perceive, the
extended maximum (supermax) is here to stay. The US purposals on the
subject (sent to the FAI in November '02) will not be officially
discussed until March of 2005. The FF Committe Chair, Ian Kaynes, may
surreptitiously bring the subject back into the discussion network
(don't count on it) but it seems to me that that subject has been
'beaten to death' in already extensive debate. The rest of the world is
quite aware of the US position and is uninspired to alter its opinion.

As far as the F1P event is concerned - the move to put this year's FF
Committee proposal (of changing F1J's motor run of 7 to 5 seconds) back
into committee means that the engine run aspects (too much performance
to be comensurate with a 2:00 max) was noted and a posible rule
adjustment ought to be considered. This relates to F1P because
eventually F1J will become an event that will not be accessible for
Junior World and Continential competitions. It will be F1P. The present
status of combining the two events only goes thru 2004. All of this
activity is to allow time for the F1P models to be built, flown and
established into the competitive persona. [Change is something the
humans generaly either resist or have become wary to conceive and
participate/embrace - especially if their opinions weren't initially
solicited which is a lot of the 'trouble' in the case of F1P.] Some of
the ideas for consideration/debate to limit F1J performance include
limiting the use and type of fuel - making it similar to F1C. The CIAM
is wary of limiting the event so much that it decreases participation
form the normally non-FAI flyers.

I encourage those who wish for more involved data on the FAI CIAM
Plenary meetings that took place in Lausanne, Switzerland 14, 15 March
to visit the FAI website at: www.fai.org The US FAI FF TSC will be
sending to the participants a mailing which will include the minutes
from the CIAM meeting.

Daniel
