Been building custom choppers and its late but always look in on you guys
on this site to see whats going on. I miss the morns at lost hills , riding
through the black hills every summer on a 150 hp chopper is great but watching

a model fly into the clouds is the best. Too ben dont worry what you wrote
in your draft that was not meant by to published its all good thats what you
meant or you would not have thought in the first place. you are an oak in the
free flight comunity, as Doc holliday would say. you know wyitt erps pal.

EIFEL POKAL 2003
=================
by Arno Hacken with English editing by Sweeptte Lee

This years Eifel Pokal started for us at friday afternoon.
The kids went to friends who would be looking after Yara and
Timo for the weekend. So Roos and myself had the opportunity
to go there just the two of us and spent some QUALITY TIME.
We arrived at the site with our trailer at 6.00 pm. After
setting up the lot and enjoying a first beer (there were
many more to come) I decided to test fly one of my L'il
AL's.
This one bird had caused some problems in France as the
electronics were not working properly. In between the french
comp and the EP I had renewed switches, batteries and
cablework and everything was working properly on the bench.
The first few starts looked good. The plane launched and
flew fine. On the third flight however the timer set off
again and the plane was towed in quite hard this to avoid
hitting some cars, however breaking a inboard panel when
hitting the ground !!
Again that timer. Not a good start for the weekend I must
say.
Mr. Victor Isaenko was present at the EP, so I handed over
the broken wing (he is from Kharkow) which he will pass on
to Vasi for repairs/replacement.
Well, after this incident I decided to stop flying.
Now it was time for a real German Schnitzel, fries and some
more beer.

F1A was supposed to start next morning at 8 a.m. The
organisers set up the starting line at 7.30 a.m. only to
find out half an hour later that the wind shifted 90
degrees.
So a move of the line, or better a re-allocation of the
starting area was necessary. This really delayed matters
and the first round started 70 minutes (!!!) late.
The organisers however did keep the 4 minutes max for this
first round. So instead of a flight in calm air it was going
to be a thermal flight. I started late in the round, wisely,
and found some good air within minutes.
That first max went in safely.
Round two and three were flown in a good breeze of about 5
m/sec. I decided to fly my other L'il AL and the bird
mastered these conditions beautifully. Both flights were
very high and were landing some 2 kilometers out. Btw, I
was quite lucky in rnd 2 as the plane landed on a road. Some
cyclist carefully moved my bird to the side and were really
guarding it till I arrived. After some explanations from me
as what all those people were doing out there, they left
very enthusiastic...
Lunchbreak was after rnd 3. The break was scheduled to last
one hour.
Very nice and relaxing. Some nice food prepared by Roos,
some cheese and some wine and I was really ready to go for
rnd 4. This was actually the best round from a weather
condition point of view. By this time I was the only one on
our starting position with a full house so I had first
choice as when to fly. It was really calm with only some
2m/sec wind and I found some good air within minutes. The
plane dt'ed high again but was only covering some 300
meters. What a difference with the earlier rounds.
Round 5 saw some increasing windspeeds but was not too bad.
At the start of rnd 6 however it was blowing 5 to 7 m/sec
and quite a few people were changing to different planes. I
decided however to continue flying L'il AL and the bird
handled the conditions really well. While towing I moved to
a area were the least turbulence could be expected. It is an
advantage when you know the flying site btw. After arriving
at that spot (L'il AL followed me like a puppy) it took me
about 5 minutes to get some decent air. A good launch and
the last thing I saw from my bird was a blinking stab when
it DT'ed really high up (300 m ?) and far far away. The
course was programmed in my GPS and I set of. With some
difficulties I did find the bird back one hour later about
3.5 k out !!!!!!
On the way back I was offered a ride by Allard (he was
retreiving by car you know ) so I was back just in time for
the start of rnd 7. Because of the windspeed the organisers
decided to bring the max time down from 180 to 150 secs for
the last round as there were some complains from downwind
farmers. I didn't object ofcourse. Actually the wind was a
bit down from rnd 6 as I set of for my final flight. It took
me some 10 minutes to find some air which I rated sufficient
for a max of 150 sec . A good launch, a good first minute
after which the plane came down a bit wile crossing the
starting line (Allard who was towing let my bird go bye) but
then again
L'il AL did what I expected him to do and DT'ed finally at
tow line height.
I made it into the F.O: !!!!
Much to my surprise I was informed that only 3 people had
all maxes. Personally I never check a score board during a
comp so this news really surprised me. The F.O. was
scheduled for 6.30 p.m. so I (we) had more than one hour to
prepare. Well this time was spent very usefull as we went
back to the trailer, enjoyed some more good food and wine
That's preparing for a f.o. the way I like, you know......

Some 15 minutes before the scheduled start we moved out to
the starting line. Since I did knew the two other f.o.
competitors ( Ron Kreetz from Holland and the german
Schmitz) I already had made up my tactical plan for that
final flight. I had to get behind these two and simply act
on their moves as my bird would outperform theirs in calm
conditions. And it really was a lot calmer at f.o. time. I
would say some 2-3m/sec wind and some light overcast.
Noticing this a good minute before the official start I
decided to use the little screw driver and opened up the
glide turn. (3/4 of a rotation on the setting screw will
make the plane go from a 35 secs/turn to a 55 sec turn )
After the hooter went, I was indeed able to position myself
behind the other two quite easily. A nice intermezzo was
created by Ansgar Nuttgens offering me a beer while towing
in front of the many onlookers.
Well, I refused that beer, especialy when I heard it was
beer without alcohol ...
While having this nice chat with Ansgar I felt some
improving air and Ron Kreetz made the first move.
I lined up with his bird and had my best launch of all day.
L'il AL was well above Ron's plane and both machines drifted
downwind After two minutes Ron's bird went a bit more to the
west and kept height better. My bird made a long downwind
leg, loosing some height but flew into some beautiful air
again. It finally made the five minutes spot on !!! Ron was
9 secs short . SO I must admit that the difference was a lot
smaller as expected but this is what can and will happen
when flying in this kind of lively/thermally air.
The german Schmitz was still towing when our planes were
almost down. From the way his plane behaved on tow one could
tell nothing much was happening up there. A good minute
before the end of the f.o. round he launched. Somehow his
mechanics let him down as his bird did a funny pattern. At
that moment it was sure I wold be the winner. Schmitz was
down in less than 2 minutes.
YES, celebrating could start. And this is just what we did.
Actually this Eifelpokal is my first major win in F1A in
some 20 years.......................!
The pricegiving was that same evening and I received my
trophee from the major of Zulpich.
(one of those big is beautifull (????) trophees) Ofcourse
we went out that evening having dinner with some friends and
some more partying afterwards. I must admitt however that I
do have a black out as it comes to how long this party did
last....... Roos told me she had to bring me to bed.
Sunday morning I was in need for some coffee but that big
smile hadn't dissapeared from my face. I was still enjoying
the day before. Despite the light headache.
When talking over the contest day with my wife she told me
she was really happy the way I had flown the comp.
Especially the fact that I was really relaxed and calm/cool
all through the day. Well of course she knows me best and I
do recall that in the past (my previous F.F. career I am
talking about now) I was indeed, often acting nervous and
stressed.
This was and is for me a even bigger win than the comp
itself. Being able to really relax and fly a comp, simply
enjoying the flying and myself. Just great !!

FAI; To BOM or not to BOM
=========================

I am relatively new to competition FF flying, not to FF model building &
flying. Been doing it for many decades. Mostly scale rubber stuff, an o
ccasional P30 or HLG, and some indoor stuff like Pennyplane or Manhattan
cabin.

>From recent reading here and in the NFFS publication, it looks like there
is no BOM rule in FAI.......is this so?

I like the looks of FAI models, and have seen them fly,....very gracefull
and aesthetically pleasing. I would like to build an FAI plane powered by
rubber. Is there any chance that a home built design could be competitive
in FAI?.....or should I just stick to AMA and FAC stuff? I DO like a
challenge!.......or is it just too much to shoot for?

I am neither for or against the BOM rule at this point in time,....just
curious.

[Many people build thier own FAI models. At the top level
there are top F1B - Walt Ghio, Anslmo Zeri, Blake Jensen , ....
who always place well up. If you are starting F1G might
be better and there too many people build their own models.
Kits are also available]

FP engines

Hi Roger,

Pretty strong statements in SCAT. The OS FP is a
snuerle engine so wouldn't need modification at all to
run well. It would be the same as allowing snuerle
AME's or cyclons in 1/2A nostalgia.

The fox fai .049 engines are readily available new and
run as good as any 1/2a nostalgia engine and anyone
can buy one for $55 so everyone can fairly compete.
They advertise all the time in the FF digest. The
back plate that Doug Galbreath sells for them makes
them better and is legal.

As for the B & C classes of nostalgia Max III's are
readily available on the used market for less than
$100 and it is hard to get a better motor for
nostalgia so why change the rules now that we have
been flying with for close to 16 years in nostalgia.

Those of us that fly it on occasion enjoy it and have
fun and we have no problems finding motors to compete
with.

Thermals,

Terry

Hi,
am looking for any data on "tomy" or "snoopy" timers. Saw an article
from Holland(?) and this address is the only one I can see on the web
page. If you are not the correct person perhaps you can pass on my
message.

Just a reminder that this short-tern event closes September 30th .. there's
still plenty of time to take your Cloud Tramp out and record five flights.

In fact, there's still plenty of time to build one first ....

At present I have 39 people who have recorded scores, plus two 'supporters'
who lost their airplanes before making five flights.....

There's plenty of room in the lists for you! Go, fly!!

Hi, all:
I have the unpleasant task of taking care of a free flighters estate. In
going through the stuff, one item stood out that might be of interest to the
competition free flighters who read SEN. I have a George Aldrich modified OS .2 5
Model SF new in the box complete with George's notes. The engine has been test

run by George and is otherwise brand new. If anyone is interested in such an
engine, please contact me at I am not sure of the value of

this engine, so I would entertain any reasonable offers.
Thanks to all,
Bob Stalick
