VILIM KMOCH

I am sure that many people in free flight will be much sadenned to hear of
the death on Oct.18th of Vilim Kmoch, many times a member of the Yugoslav
team at World Championships and a good friend to many of us. I'm sure his
very many friends in model flying from all over the world will join me in
expressing their great regrets both to the Croatian Aeronautucal Federation
and to his family.

Vilim's friendship across several political so-called 'divides' embodied
the very best in international contest flying, and I am proud to have known
him as a friend since first meeting him at the World Free-Flight
Championships in Leutkirch in the mid-1960s. I last saw him at the 2001
CIAM meeting in Lausanne, where he attended the F/F technical meeting
though having only recently recovered from a very nasty car accident. His
wide knowledge of aeronautical matters will, I know, be greatly missed
outside his own country as well as within Croatia. We need more Vilim
Kmochs and fewer of the sort of people who brought such tragedy to his part
of the world in the past decade.

A Legend passed away
====================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Last night, saturday the 18`th one of the legends of world aeromodelling
Vilim Kmoch has left us at the age of 71.
He was the biggest name ever in history of the Croatian aeromodelling.

Older modellers will remember him as one of the pioneers in the
aeromodelling,
and also as one of the world top F1Band F1D flyers in the 70`ies.
Younger modellers (me included) especially in Croatia looked up to him as an
icon,
and living example that that great competitor in a man, does not exclude a
noble spirit.
Right until the end he was active in aeromodelling ,embracing any new
technology with a joy of a kid.

A charmer ,a joker ,a storyteller, and always a gentleman on as well as
outside a field.

He went proudly riding into a sunset....
Farewell my mentor and my friend

Your Mario

Roger, for SEN

I preparation for the JR WC and the Finals in Florida, I converted the
mechanical micro switches on my electronic bunters to magnetic reed switches.
All seemed well-- others have been using them for some time. Just before we
left for the Jr WC, I had a strange flight on my new Standard M&K long model.
I use many M&K components including their basic hook but the bunt system is
mine. I was just starting the run up, towline at 45 degrees to the ground,
the model came off the line, did some aerobatics and just missed pulling out
by a foot--- ie it hit the ground in a hard skid. The damage was minor. I
attributed this to bad tow / launch technique.

We packed and off to Europe we went, In practice, I let Dallas fly my Extra
Long Model (with the same switch set-up) in the field in front of the motel
Tanya in Hungary. Twice he had the similar exciting launch but fortunately
the model missed the ground both times. We put the model away. Dallas flew
his mechanical M&K long models and his electronic Wishbone (that still had
the mechanical switches) at the Jr. WC.

Back in the states, I had another "strange" flight with my Long M&K model.
Now it's starting to register. I had apprehension but this model was flying
well. In Florida, all was well unit it did it again, suffering minor damage.
Repaired, We flew it again that evening-- all going well. The next morning,
the last practice day, the model was going good until it did it again, this
time snapping the boom. I put the model away and "borrowed" Dallas' long
model for the finals.

Interestingly enough, the model that I broke the wing on in the last flight
at the Finals had the same set-up. It did not display this problem. As a
side note, the broken wing seems to be due to an air bubble that formed at
the end of the wire during the spar fabrication. Eugene V. is returning the
wind to M&K for their analysis. Of the hundreds of quality wings they have
provided, would you know that a "Factory Rep" would get the one bad one?

Practice evening before the Sierra Cup was gorgeous! Stephan Rupp, Van Nest,
Cowley, Brun, Zink etc were putting in calm air flights. I was flying my M&
K extra long model and getting some very good bunts off. Pierre, flying his
Extra Long model, and I decided to fly together-- he went first. I quickly
accelerated and the line went limp-- it happened again! This does not
explain DTing early the next morning on the 1st round. Oh well!

On the drive back, I finally connected the dots of all these strange
launches. It was time to investigate!

After some experiments, I was able to see a false switch opening on my ohm
meter. I got with Ken Bauer who was able to clearly see these occasional
false switch opening on an oscilloscope. The false openings lasts only 1-4
milli-seconds. We determined this was caused by the shock of the hook keeper
hitting the hook body.

I have experimented with a lighter force latch spring and a rubber cushion to
reduce the shock. I have not tested this with Ken's oscilloscope but a false
open reading on my ohm meter indicates that the mechanical modifications will
not work.

Ken has modified the Basic Stamp program I use by simply putting a 50
milli-second pause after the latch hook switch is "armed." This will allow
the front switch time to "normalize" in the closed position when the hook is
still forward before towline release. Hopefully this will do the trick.

I'm interested if anyone else has learned this lesson. I suspect that the
Stamov hook may not have this problem because the wire latch has much less
mass and so does not impart as large a shock into the hook / switches.

Thermals, Jim Parker

[Jim

In the both Black and Red Magic Timers the hook switches
are 'debounced' in the timer firmware. There is a parameter
that the user can set depending on his choice of switch and
personal preference. Both reed and mechanical [aka micro switches]
can be noisy, making and breaking actual contact several times
for a real contact. I have not done any tests to see if a Hall effect
device gives a cleaner contact. Certainly one would not problems
caused by switch blades vibrating but there could be an issue
with how the actuating magnet moved. ]

Roger,

This is directed to Ralph Cooney:
In the May-June or August 2002 NFFS Digest Ralph is shown with an F1G having
a 3-element wing. I fly an F1G which seems similar and would like to
compare the designs.

In general I am interested in current feelings about Schuman tips for
F1B and F1G.
