Chip tuning the bunt, or ABS

Hi all,

In reply to Aram Schosberg's comment on decalage and towhook position, I can
announce that the continuous change of decalage during speed up and bunt is
already a reality.
My latest electronic timer does this. Rene Limberger tested one of my
earlier versions and found out that in still air this can give remarkable
improvements in launch height. In practice at hook unlatch the decalage is
relatively low (say 2 mm up at stab TE) and progressively moves up to a
much higher decalage of about 10 mm (!). The advantages were evident:

-In still-air there is allways high line tension during the whole
speed -up phase, and therefore higher speed.
-The towline does not have to be pulled down at the end of the speed -up
phase to keep the tension (speed) --> gain" body length " 2 meter
-The model can be released at towline angles close to 90 degrees instead of
the optimum 70 degrees (see M&K article in Sympo)
-The angle of the model on the towline is more 'nose up' at release,
thereby obtaining vertical position for the cruise faster.
-The ballistic (low drag) cruise can be started earlier, so more energy
efficient (speed ---> height).

Rene is developing an animated bunt sequence (ABS) programming facility on
an Ipaq palmtop. I take care of the microcontroller bit in the timer.
The decalage (stab angle on vertical axis)) is graphically
represented by a curve versus time (horizontal axis). The whole sequence of
decalage can be 'kneaded' to shape from towhook unlatch all the way to glide
mode. The curve is sampled in the Ipaq and then uploaded to the
microcontroller. This way of programming the decalage gives noticable
advantages in still air. In wind / thermal conditions a more classical way
of decalage settings works fine as well.

More on this subject later (Sympo article maybe ....)

Best wishes for 2001 to all, Allard van Wallene

Music wire (as sold in a music store) is the obvious choice for weird sizes.
It's generally stainless of high tensile strength and available in many
diameters. Have found similar product sold in sporting goods stores as
fishing leader. Bought some .014 &.029 a long time ago.

A trip thru the Phoenix Yellow Pages a long long time back resulted in a
call to a wire vendor who would provide any diameter in .002 increments in
coils or straightened. This was sold by the pound.

Yet another source was a Wholesale Jewelry/Watchmaker Supply. They also
have rectangular cross section as used in springs. At least they had it in
the windup watch era.

Happy New Year to All,
H
