Roger
It is with great sadness that I report a plane crash has taken the life of
Jerry Cody and his son Paul, on Sunday Feb. 4 2001.
Jerry was an F1C competitor for a few years and placed 4th at the '96 finals
at Lost Hills.
We all will miss his exuberance, humor and wit.

Dear Masaru,

thanks for your comments about your experience with large props and thin
motors. It may well have a baring on the whole problem. I am not surprised
at the effect with the large prop. Also, although I havn't thought it out
yet, it may well be worth remembering that the prop also has an effect on
lateral stabilty, as it is acting as a kind of forward rudder, apart from the
obvious torque and prop normal related effects.

It is good to hear from you Masaru !!

All the best

Peter King

F1A line tension & closed loops
===============================

Andrew Barron describes an option (theoretical?) to keep line tension high
by adjusting the stab.
Interesting, but clearly a closed loop control system (CLCS)!
The question is:
Does the rule against CLCS apply already during tow, or not, insofar as the
timed flight has not yet started? Or is a CLCS forbidden as part of the
model, and thus not allowed at all?

The whole discussion on CLCS is a bit academic, as in fact the whole idea of
a self-stabilizing free flight model airplane depends on a CLCS - just an
aerodynamic, and not an electronic system. And varaiable pitch props also
can be considered CLCS: they adjust continuously according to torque.

So how can the FAI ban CLCS without banning free flight? or is it a
back-door approach to force us into RC? (grin)

I believe, the aim should be to prevent RC in free flight, which becomes
hard to prove with lots of electronics already on board. If some electronic
genius should design something to replace aerodynamic or mechanical CLCS
with electronic CLCS - why not? It might bring new ideas and new people into
our sport!

San Valeers at Taft on April 8, or Lost Hills on April 8? I'm getting two
different messages. The one in Scat Elec. News says it was last year, (which
is mistake that I have made myself. I think computers do that to us.)

Applogies to Terry for putting up last years flyer - when documents are sent
to me in MS word format I must convert them to plain test for SEN and
generally to HTML to display on the web site . Sometimes I screw up -
like this time and sometimes I do not do it quite the way you want.
If you send it to me in those formats it will get
dispatched sooner as I do not have to get around to working on it.

F1B Climb problems
==================

I have not experienced this situation , (F1B goes left on prop run
when the motor run is lengthened).
But from what has been described it seems that there is a lack of the
normal right turn.
The right turn is something that we balance other forces against to
provide a steady, stable controlled climb.
(a straight climb is definitely not preferred !).
The right turn comes from right thrust, (and also right turn is
necessary to counertact the left torque of that huge prop), And we
balance the right turn with rudder (straight rudder or slight left),
and wing washin (fixed warp or Wing Wiggler).
So if our F1B does not go normal right during climb/cruise the first
thing I would do is add some right thrust.
Other things to try would be to remove some left rudder, or amount of
wing warp (WW).
To reduce the time of the WW and AR would be the last thing I would
try.

Extended first round

I like to comment Peter Tribe's remark on the Poitou Mini contest. This
contest is a 5 round contest starting at sunrise. Last round around noon.
In order to eliminate a Fly-off at that time of the day (mid day during
mid summer) the organization decided to have an unlimited first round as
an early Fly-off when the conditions are perfect to fly a Fly-off. The
time over two minutes is kept for these contestants who fly 5 maxes. If
you mis one round you get a 120 sec. for the first round.
The question is does Peter like to fly a Fly-off after the contest around
noon with a good possibility to loose his model?
