Post this in the SEN please) In response to several long winded individuals I have several thoughts and maybe an idea to possibly help the FAI world. I've read and listened to allot of people and seen the high-tech FAI price list and came up with a good conclusion. First off, this end of the hobby population in not growing like others would like, and FAI is very expensive to get into (initial cost, like R/C) especially in the F1C world. Secondly to some people in this hobby money (apparently) is no object, well to some of us (being of the WWII baby boom era) money is a very big object or at least a large hurdle and the times of today aren't making it any better. For me personally, I find it difficult to justify spending $45 on a set of Andruikov prop blades, a Vivchar simple prop hub at $75 (no DPR) when your 16 year old, size 12D is wearing shoes with holes in them and your wife is whispering "baby needs a new pair of shoes" at $75-100 a pair. The point is, that you cut corners and save so you can get to some of these contest and have fun like all the other guys and it would be nice to be able to fly in some of these larger event like F1B at some of the large SCAT contests. I had a blast flying F1G (I can still use an "all balsa" plane in F1G and I can build lots of them) last Feb/Mar at the SCAT contest but would liked to have flown in F1B instead of only the one event on Friday and make good use of the entire weekend. So many of these contest (FAI) have the mini events either before or after the main contest. To combat one of these problems I'm making the following suggestion. Some of you old timers that don't fly that much anymore or you "money no object" guys that keep up-grading any time something new come out should consider this. How about making your (universal) out dated, not used much anymore or older parts available to us financially challenged dudes at a reasonable price. Parts like motor tubes (high tech stuff), tail booms, prop blades, old prop hubs, serviceable timers and so on. This could help people in the F1A and F1C world too as many of there parts are very expensive. This could help some people get something together so they could at least be out there flying too, I enjoy building and flying and its even nice to win once in a while. One other thought, what some people consider old or almost junk might be great to someone else who has none. I mean things like prop blades, hubs and the like. Well, those are my thoughts, what do you think? Can this go some where or am I just talking in the wind. Thank for your time guys. Bill Gannon, Lancaster, Ca.

I've been follwing the whole F.1.C discussion with great interest, and for what it's worth, here's what i think; Let technology run it's course! >From the first time i saw an F.A.I contest, and even though these models have fairly strict rules governing them, the performance of the models was the thing that attracted me to F.A.I classes. The seemingly endless, hanging-on-the-prop climb of a good F.1.B, the sheer acceleration and noise of a top F.1.C, the many interesting technological advances, these were all things that made me decide to start flying an F.A.I class. It seems as if the focus by the F.A.I has been to almost continually reduce this performance, and as always, inovative modellers have come up with ideas that have overcome this. Sadly, if this state of afairs continues, one day us modellers are all going to run out of ideas to counteract the rule changes, and we'll be lucky if our overweight/underpowered models will climb much past 100 feet or so,and glide like stones....come on F.A.Ier's, is this what we want?, it sure doesnt do alot for me. Consider this, in the world of Formula one motor racing, can you imagine the rules being changed so as to only allow the competitors to race Model T Fords?, that wouldnt exactly make for exciting sport now would it? Of course, the price to pay for a top class F.A.I model is high, technology aint cheap, it's too costly for me to buy a complete model, but I'm not about to propose a complete ban on progress just because i can't afford to buy one! As for the sugestion to return to balsa structures and locked up surfaces for F.1.C, utter nonsense, we may as well all return to building models from bamboo, wire and silk, for which there are classes already, it's called Vintage. And finally, to the F.A.I commitee, please stop and think, before making rule changes that will only kill all that is good about F.A.I contests! 7 second engine runs & 40 gram F.1.B motors to all!(Anarchy rules) Jason Magill New Zealand

I dont think there is much that we can do about the dwindeling numbers of flyers in F1c. It seems to me, that the only way you should be able to fly auto surfaces is in the FAI class. If that were the case maybe more guys would concentrate thier efforts and cash on it. Remember after the world trade center attack sombody said if we all went out the next day and bought 1 share of stock it would prevent a skid in the stock market. How about this, if you have any kind of A gas ship that flys no matter what it is so long as the whieght and area is correct flyit in the next meet. Lets not be gready why not let the less sophisticated ships have a longer engine run so that the playing field might be kinda equal. I know one thing for sure if it works out like the NFL we all might be suprised. 83% of the games are decided by three points or less. We also might see more guys haveing fun and maxing out and that is what counts working all day at a meet and being the final show at the end of the day. If I could get a couple extra seconds for the engine run I would fly a lucky Lindy through the first seven rounds. Anyway most you guys out there flying used make a max or two when they used to call it FAI power. There was this guy a long time ago who flew a wood plane to first place with a wood prop. It by the way was the only contest he ever won. While everybody at the meet was flying aluminum and folding props. I think I have a few new style trimmed F1c models in my box that anybody who does what I suggest at the NATS this summer will be able to fly one of my planes if they like in the flyoffs. All you have to do is push a button and let it go straight up. Chris Murphy in the Dec 10 issue of ScatEN has given the new websites for the World Cup events at Omarama, New Zealand, next year. These seem correct. I tried to to get this information to you about four days b ack but for some reason the message bounced, do not know why. As the technical committee member who prepared the basic information for the si te, and advised you earlier of an address, I must apologise. I was caught up in a change of webmasters, had sent written material to the US where the previous webmaster was living and this then had to be sent back to NZ. With apologies to Chris there was a fair bit of Murphy's law involved. The new NZMAA webmaster, Gary Ireland, has done a great job and this site inclu des entry forms and official contacts. I note Dave Thomas's comment on the value of the Australian dollar against the US. NZ currency is even weaker, but prices for accomodation and so on are the same in face value, so it is very cheap to come to NZ. Hope to see many of you at Omarama Lincoln

Mark. I agree with you in spirit. I want to build my own. Beyond that I'm even bullheaded enough to design my own. But what scares me is that I'm running out of time. I have more projects going than I can finish.in my lifetime... or the lifetime of free flight. It would be advantageous to bend a bit and be expedient. However: Do yourself a favor and rent a video tape of Flight of the Pheonix. It came out in 1966 -- The year of the first central FAI team selection trial -- beginning of NFFS. ... James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Peter Finch, Hardy Kruger, Ernest Borgnine, Dan Durea, George Kennedy. The Great Sahara Desert. A first class production. A group of oil workers are flying back to civilization across the desert when their plane goes down. It was a twin engined, twin boomed job. Hardy, the model designer, convinces the group that they can rebuild it into a single engined design and get it off the ground using a sled as a sand ski. When it comes out that Hardy is a model designer the muck hits the fan; however, they get the damned thing re-built. and take off hoping to intersect an oasis. One of the great movie stunt flyers -- Paul Mantz -- was killed during the filming when the ship did a unexpected ground loop and fuselage failed behind the "cockpit." The "toy airplane" confrontation by Stewart is a classic. Best, Bill G
