re CIAM Proposals
=================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

There are lots of proposals there, some you like, some you don't.
Here are some of my thoughts on just two issues.

RCDT
I really do not like this. We do not need it.
Yes I agree that it would be really nice to have, there are lots of neat =
things it can do for you.
But at the same time we see lots of proposals to the same meeting for =
ways to make models simpler.
This is in response to the spiralling technology, complexity, cost and =
performance of our models. This is putting the classes beyond the reach =
of more people that it attracts, and numbers are dwindling, not =
increasing.
RCDT will confer enormous tactical advantages to those who have it, and =
it will become essential to have this one more toy to stay competitive.
It will add weight, complexity and cost to our models, and put people =
off. We do not need this.

And the other reason I do not like it is that it is not free flight. To =
be free flight the model needs to be free.
If you can control it by radio then it is not free flight, not for me =
anyway. I fly R/C sometimes, and appreciate the differences, that is why =
I like free flight better.=20
This is a philosophical argument but it IS important.=20
What is the next step ?, why cannot we allow RC assist to steer the =
model back to the flight line AFTER it has maxed. And on and on. There =
are other contest classes for this but it not free flight.

I vote no, we do not need RCDT.

Fuel tube engine run
I find this Italian proposal intriguing. No reason or explanation is =
given.=20
But my analysis of the effect, and the reason is as follows.
This change would allow existing aircraft to continue to be used, while =
at the same time inducing a paradigm shift in the way power models =
operate.
Changes to existing models would be,=20
1 reduced performance due to lack of fuel pressure (suction only)
2 no problem timing engine runs, timing no longer required, no over runs =
!!!
3 length of engine run would be ?? longer?? shorter??
And in the future
1 promote a shift to slower climbing models, requiring less gadgets
2 promote the use of more fuel efficient engines (diesels. spark ign ?)
3 as development happens it is easy to cut back the fuel allowance

But what I really want to know is some feedback and information from the =
Italian power fliers, and whoever drafted this proposal. What is the =
intention of this proposal ?, has it being trialed ?, have they tried a =
fast (current) model, and a slow (fuel efficient) model, what was the =
result ?.
Somebody likes this idea, please, tell us why.

Source for electronic timer
===========================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

ST2 is a full-featured electronic timer for F-1-A class gliders.

Main Features:
-controls up to two servos;
-maximum 10 steps (commands) of program are available. The times (time
delays) and the servo positions for each step are programmable;
-maximum time value is 999 seconds (more then 16 minutes) with minimum
increment of 0.1 sec.;
-the servo position range is from 0 to 250 units;
-servo positions for three hook states may be programmed for towing;
-servo positioning in real time;
-two DT (Dethermalize) sets are available. The time and servo positions
for each DT set may be programmed. The DIP switch selects desired DT =
set;
-SLEEP mode for power saving. The servo power is completely turned OFF
while in the SLEEP mode.
Fail Safe functions. Fixes the servos at selected DT position when =
accident
situations are detected:
-power fails (against brownout events during free flight);
-the towline is lost or breaks down (against flyaway);
-acceleration time is longer then the preprogrammed time;
-an external signal presents at the interrupt input longer then the
preprogrammed time (this may be used against diving and/or for remote =
landing...).
Other functions:
-confirm acoustic signals;
-acoustic beacon for location of the model. The beacon may be switched
ON or OFF by the DIPswitch at any time;
-unused servo skipping;
-pause/resume functions;
-auto stopwatch function ready.
All the programmed data are stored in EEPROM.
Firmware upgradable.
An expensive computer and corresponding software is not requested for
programming. Only a simple console is used for programming/checking. The =
console does not
need for an additional battery.

Size, mm: 34 x 29.5 x 13
Weight w/o battery, buzzer, sensors and servos: 6 gram
Voltage: 3 - 6 VDC (4 x NiCd)

All further information are available upon inquiry.

Polyspan Question
=================
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Dear Roger and friends,

I do hope that you and all the competitors participating in these
Californian Free Flight Days have had a very nice time.

Not being there I used the weekend to cover a pair of F1B wings
with the well-known Polyspan/Klaus Salzer Vlies for the first time ever. I
normally use Mylar for this purpose - no problems.
The Polyspan went on very easily using dope as an adhesive just like
covering with jap paper in the good old days. The material adhered to the
bare carbon structure very good. Then I gave the covering four times thinned
dope 50/50 and it became tight. A water spray confirmed that the dope had
also made it waterproof.
But the surface is still full of fluffies or fuzzies. I tried to
sand them off but it nearly made it worse.
Now my question is: Should I live with these built in
turbulators/invigorators or does anyone know a trick to make the surface a
little more smooth?
I would be very grateful to hear anything on this subject.

Best regards

Bear Cup 2000

Bear Cup 2000

This year we had probably the best conditions ever. Temperatures a few
degrees C below zero, wind from calm to 3m/s, and overcast. 50cm of solid
steel ice (if you had had a road to the lake, you could have drown a car
on it), with 10cm of fresh, soft powder snow on top. Easy to walk on,
excellent for skiing.

The fly-offs went straight into 7 minutes. In glider 6 made it to the
fly-off, with the Finns (Kari Tuisku, Kim Henrikkson and Heikki
Salminen) taking a triple. In F1B, Michael Seifert took victory, followed
by Alexander Shelepov and Janne Isotalo. In F1C Jyri Roots won once again,
Timo Niiranen was the second, and Kaarle Kuukka third.

CIAM agenda and RDT
===================

Roger,

Chris Edge asked me to forward this to SEN to help the RDT rules change
discussion along. It looks pretty sensible to me. The initial part was
originally sent to John Barker. John is chairman of the FFTC, which runs
Free Flight in the UK.

CIAM rules II
==============
Author : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Roger,

Sorry this stuff is coming through somewhat piecemeal, but CHE and I have
also been discussing the Italian rules and here are some points that haven't
been aired recently, if at all, in SEN. You may want to edit this onto the
end of the previous e-mail.

Martin

I sent the following to Chris Edge in discussions on the Italian rule
proposals:

"The 5 minute launch window rule is a big problem with the Italian
proposals. I think its a bit much to ask a timekeeper to time 5 minutes on
one watch and still correctly start the flight time watch on launch. I have
visions of Gordon Speedie here (old NZ clubmate) who was practising HLG one
day, got distracted and threw the watch while clicking the glider."

Here is his response (I was at the same contest he's talking about and saw
it too):
>
> "As for the 5 minute rule, it is open to abuse. I remember at Maniago
> one year when they flew that rule that a local (Italian) was allowed

My response to these objections to the longer max is that we don't often get
suitable conditions in the UK but that a longer max would be very useful
when such conditions do crop up, e.g. the last UK Nats, most days at
Maniago, the 1998 Poitou event and even on some days at Lost Hills.

Dear Roger
Dear Free Flight lovers all over the world

Considering the news about the unavailability of Australia to host 2001
World Champ.for Free Flight, the Portuguese Aeromodelling Federation is
considering the possibility of proposing Portugal as organiser of the
event.
We will give you further news about that in a short time.
