Removing Tissue
Here's the way I have done it for years. Wrap a wing panel with paper
towel, both sides. Pour acetone on the towel until the towel is
saturated and acetone is running off. Wait about one minute, sometimes
less. Lift up the paper towel at an end, and with a sharp blade
(exacto), try lifting the tissue. If it is not loose yet, apply some
additional acetone. In most cases you can get the tissue off in one
large piece. Repeat for each panel, front and back.
On a very old structure, it might take a little extra acetone to loosen
the old dope.
On a particularly difficult piece, I sometimes wrap Saran Wrap around
the whole thing while the acetone works.
I just removed the covering from a 1/2A Zeek that had been covered since
1984. It took about 15 minutes.

DO NOT DO THIS OPERATION INSIDE!!!! WEAR GLOVES!!! NO SMOKING!!!!!

Tissue can be affectively removed from balsa structures by first knowing
what type of dope was used:

Get a large trash bag or two enough to close in entire structure.
Then spray/spritz on the correct dope thinner all over the structure (get it
wet) per dope used to apply tissue.
Place structure in trash bag, you can also add extra thinner into the trash
bag as the fumes aid considerably to the process, Seal and leave set.
Check on the progress as you do not want the system to dry out and have to
start all over.
Remove structure from bag and peel off tissue.

Hey, Roger,

One thing I have heard recommended foir getting tissue off of balsa is to put
the structural component into a thinner-proof garbage bag, drop in a cup of
thinner and tie the bag shut. After about 10 - 20 hours of soaking the paper
is supposed to peel right off. Lemmee know if it works! The only time I
tried it the youngest son was doing something with my propane torch, burned
my Wakefield wing to the ground and tried to take the basement down too! (Do
you burn DOWN a basement or burn it UP?)

March 1950 Aeromodeller: I'm sure that the AMA library has a copy of thearticle
you need. Contact Rich LaGrange, Librarian, at (765) 287-1256, ext. 506.

Removing tissue: Best way I know is to give the still-covered surface a heavy c
oat of thinner, then wrap in Saran Wrap or similar. Wait an hour or so, and th
e tissue should come off pretty easily. Might take a little more work to get it
off LEs and TEs cleanly, but it gets the worst of it off without a lot of sand
ing and cursing. Not that I mind the cursing so much, but sanding that stuff of

Indoor tools

Dear Roger,

Some time ago, I found on SEN that somebody was looking for indoor tools
as torque meter, winder, rubber stripper... made by a Polish indoor
flyer...
I had no time at this moment, to make an answer, as I was leaving for
Romania for the F1E (Slope soaring glider with magnet steering) European
Champs, and now I can't find that message again.
I guess that this gentleman was looking for the very good tools made by
Rishard CZECHOVSKI from Poland. Unfortunatly, Rishard left us a few
years ago, but I know from his daughter Magdalena that he still had many
tools at home, ready for sale.
