Hi Roger,
On Saturday after the Team Selection contest I found a thermister still on
the field at Lost Hills. If anyone lost one, let me know. Also, I'll bring
it to the Sierra Cup this coming weekend.
Thanks to everyone who participated in putting on a terrific final.

USA Team Selection Results - Reformatted
========================================
Applogies to the readers but we were somewhat tired and
not thinking straight so after sending out the results
I realized that we had not sorted them into order and
labelled the places... So here they are again - a bit better
presented.

Covering with Ikarex
====================

Put the stuff on with thinned contact cement and then heat shrink with a
heat gun or covering iron.
I use Evostick thinned almost to the consistency of 50% thinned dope. Cover
each panel with a single piece of Ikarex, starting under the LE, working
round the TE and ending with a small overlap so the free edge points to the
rear. If you are using different colours top and bottom, cover the top
first, wrapping the covering round the carbon TE and leaving the LE edge
free. Cover the under surface, overlapping the front edge with the flap of
upper surface material to give a small overlap and stick the TE onto the
Ikarex wrapped round the TE.

Yes, I confirm Pierre's statement of F1G, H & J having 10 minutes flyoff
period as from last year.

Martyn,
I confirm that this modification (3.G.8.b -
3.H.8.b.- 3.J.8.b. and 3.K.8.) 10 minutes round
instead of 15 for fly-off, has been adopted at the 1998 Plenary
meeting, and is mentioned in the minutes of that meeting.
It applies to F1H, F1G, F1J and F1K which are provisional
rules, and as such, do not have to wait for the 4
years cycle. So it is already applied since 1st january 1999. I
wish you the best for the Sierra Cup.
Looking forward for next year...
Best regards,
Pierre

I seem to remember Goerge Batiuk making a comment about not finding
a rule to do with the processing of models that was used
at the Junior WC. George found that on the FAI Web Site
in addition to the Sporting Code there is a supplement with
some later rules changes.... maybe it is 'printed' there]

P. King (Climb Simulation..again)
Dear Jean,
First of all, I misunderstood you regarding the flight speed of differing
AR's. Of course the higher the AR the lower the CL therefore the higher the
velocity.
I have checked up on how I handle the effect of Re No in the climb mode and
this is the situation with some results and graphs, attached in Exel.
In fact the Re is simulated during the climb and gave the following results
when I ran two cases. ie. AA's AA30 (AR ca 15.8 and Alex's 'Long model' AR
ca 22 plus.
If you can download the Exel spread sheet, you will see figures for velocity,
climb angle and CL. They show what one would expect but notice that the
motor run stays about the same at ca 43.5 secs in both cases.
A short summary of the comparitive performance is as follows:
LOW AR HIGH AR
Motor run 43.65 43.55
Glide CL 1.017 0.982
Height (m) 104.75 106.95
Duration 369 sec 397 sec
Notice the duration is slightly less for the high AR despite the higher climb
!! (Due to Re effect on the glide at high AR.
A look at the spread sheet will show that, as we would expect, the CL is
slightly higher for the Low AR and the Velocity is slightly lower. An
interesting thing I found was that the difference is far more marked at the
end of the climb when the CL is highest. During the 1st 2/3rds of the
climb there is little difference in either speed or CL. To sum up, the High
AR Wake climbs just over two meters higher but takes an almost identical time
to get there !!! How does all this compare with your observations and
calculations. As I understand it, the effect is similar to what you have
noticed but the magnitude of difference is lower ?? It is very welcome to
have all this feed back and it all helps enormously in refining the computer
simulations. All the best to you Jean !!

NEW EXEL GRAPHS for Climb Sim.
I have now done a better spread sheet, (See attachment), of the effects of AR
on the F1B climb.
It now shows 3 AR's ranging from 13/1 to 22/1. In fact the duration is
highest at 22/1

I dropped one flight this weekend - 97 secs! If I had done 102 on that
one, I would have made the team...........
Weather was good all three events had fly-offs. A and C to 5 mins, B to
7mins
These are excellent teams for us.
Looking forward to Endless October II - see you all there.
Regards
Mike and Lauren.
