Roger,

Here's an attempt to steer some of the scat talk towards fun model flying type stuff. I've been thinking - what's the one universal
thing that all free flighters everywhere love? Answer: thermals!

Here's my ideas on the best indications of a thermal. Hopefully others who are better air pickers than me will add to this list.

1. Tents and sunshades on field lifting off the ground.
2. Birds circling overhead and going up.
3. Models circling overhead and going up.
4. All the streamers on the field point to one spot in the middle of the field.
5. A cool breeze hits your face after a warm calm spell.
6. Bob White's fluffys are going up.
7. Bob White launches his coupe.
8. Dust in air swirling upwards.
9. F1A glider is pulling up so hard you fear accidental unlatch.
10. All of the above simultaneously.

Those is the US can count down a list like this for David Letterman effect.

Comments ..

Great pool party at Motel 6, which I largely missed as I was still
flying after the sun went down. SCAT founding memeber Bill
Hartill and Inza were there, so was verteran F1C Flyer John Hannah.
Batiuk had half the US Team, including all the F1B guys, Jim Parker
and Ron McB flying. Some were working on the rubber to see what performs
best. I liked the May 99, but do not know what the
Team thought. Everyone took part
in the early morning fly off. Alexander Andriukov was the only one to
get 7 minutes and the rumor is the motor already had one flight on it.!
The glide was very nice. [I know I should have turned that crew a little more]
Many people, including your scribe got around 6 minutes. The air
was very nice, no big thermals
but certainly on the positive side. This was at 6:50 am.

Congrats to Tina Brush flying in her first contest, she did very well
making 4 maxs, including the 4 minute long round and only
just missing the others. She got so much
helpful advice, I think it will take forever to sort it out.
[Remember now - take 3 deep breaths before launching, be sure to get
both feet off the ground .. or was just one OK?, point the model
up, or the right , hold the model to the right side
of your body .. or was it kind of over your back ,..]
It's rumored that Tina will take part in the Batiuk F1B School
just before Nats in Muncie.

Very sucessful event organized by the Diez family - Susana did try
to start the long morning round before Hector was ready.. but he
managed to triumph any way. Plans are to do it again next year.

For the curious I think the temperature was in the low 90s when
I arrived on Saturday afternoon, a bit of a breeze but not too bad.
[as expected everyone who was here earlier said it was just perfect in morning]
When I was driving out on Sunday at about 10:30 am
the thermometer in my car read 86 , but I seem to recollect my
thermistor reading higher than that earlier on.

so here's the scoop from Muncie ..

Sidebar from Muncie Inter-Cities meet.
A well known F1a/Coupe flyer, on his way home from the contest, called his
honey and told her that he needed a new motorcycle. She asked, "what's the
matter with the one you have?"
He answered "it won't run."
She asked "why not?"
He answers "We have a little disagreement here as to why. I say it's because
its getting old, but some of the other guys think it's because it fell off
the truck, and then I backed over it, and it's still under the truck.
There may be some truth to the above report, and there may be some fiction,
but I bet you can figure out which is which.
