BOM Moratorium
==============
With this issue we have a BOM moratorium .. i.e. no more discussion.
Like it or not there is not a BOM rule
in FAI Free Flight - It's not going to chnage in the
immediate future and changing it will not
bring increased participation or solve
any of our other problems...
So lets look at other ways of making things better
and exchnaging technical information, Contest information
and results.
Monica Lewinsky

I firmly agree with Mike Achterberg and Doug Galbreath. BOM rules are as
archaic as Monica Lewinsky's lips. We need flyers, not atta boy accolades.

Is it appropriate to post on your list a collection of Aero Modeller
annuals I have for sale? FYI, the collection consists of 16 volumes:
1956-57; 1961-62; 1962-63; 1963-64; 1964-65; 1967-68; 1968-69; 1969-70;
1970-71; 1971-72; 1972-73; 1973-74; 1974-75; 1975-76; 1977-78; 1978-79.
Thank you for your attention to this. Ethan.

Bob White Clarification

Roger,
Didn't think I'd comment on BOM but our friend, mild mannered Bob White got
bent out of shape because I implied that HE bought his models.
Appologies to Bob and anyone else who misinterpreted my comment which was
"Bob White took advantage of bought models to gain his record points
(America's cup). Others (Bob's competitors) bought models and shot
themselves in the foot."
I have never knowingly even remotely implied that Bob bought a complete
model as he designs and builds virtually every component on all his models
and I must say he does it very well. Sorry if I caused any elevated blood
pressure.

Dear Fellow Modelers,
Way back when I was in the USAF, I learned a wise adage. NEVER, NEVER,
argue politics or religion!!! The BOM, I'm afraid, falls into this
catagory. You either like it, or hate it, and you'll never convince
anyone to switch sides. Enough already, please, thank you.

A FEW LAUGHS
============

Hey Roger, Ive been looking at this freeflight page the last few weeks and I
have read alot of stuff that really makes me want to get back into F1c again.
I think it would be very helpful if there was more complaining about stupid
rules that have nothing to do with anything except to discurage a novice like
myself. If I did not know bettor I would think that this crew was made up of
a bunch of simpletons that should be building or buying airplanes instead of
worrying about the natural progression of things. The bottom line is with the
exception of a few hundred guys in this country there are still a few who
like to have thier pylons built for them. Now if I can find the time to pack
my Acterberg bought models in my box, I might have the time to sit at my
lathe and make a few glow plugs so that I can make out west to the MaxMen.

Dear Mr Buxton,
To my knowledge we have never met or competed, but when we do it will be
my pleasure.
Your comments on becoming reinvolved with FAI event flying after a
period of inactivity
reminded me of my own feelings and observations when I returned after a hiatus.
If you have questions or need help in acquiring top quality parts or
planes, please let me know.
I would be honored to assist your rapid return to FAI competition success!
Ciao,
Lee Hines
Rapidly Folding 216, 217, 219 or 220 MHz antenna for dog tracking

While browsing the Cabela's outdoors catalog I noted the dog tracking
radios with up to 7 miles range and 200 hours use. I then visited the
relevant page of manufacturer's web site at
http://www.sportdog.com/products/tracking_equipment/sportdog_trackers.htm
and related frames.
The rapidly folded and unfolded antenna (patent pending) is available for
216, 217, 219 or 220 MHz apparently has antenna elements made of flexible
steel that simply folds back when the unit is pushed into a cylindrical
storage quiver. To quote the description:
Haven't you waited long enough for a better antenna? Now it's here. If
you designed yourself the best antenna you could, this is what you'd
come up with. This compact antenna weighs only 1
pound and features our exclusive (patent
pending) instant open/close design. Pull it out of our
deluxe carrying case and the three flexible
steel elements are already in the ready-to-use
position. When it comes time to move on,
the elements fold down as you slide it back into the
case. This antenna is a real time-saver. No
wing nuts to tighten. No more folding or unfolding
elements one at a time.
There are accompanying photographs on two different pages that show a 3
element yagi antenna similar to a Walston.
At $200 for the reciever/antenna combination it is a bit pricey (I doubt
the recever is optimal or even works with a Walston transmitter). I've
e-mailed them to see if the antenna is available separately (even by
individual parts). Alternatively, you might be able to make one for your
own use.
A complete system including a transmitter of unstated size and weight (too
heavy for a coupe I'm certain) is $700.
