REQUEST FOR NOMINATOINS
NFFS 2000 TEN MODELS OF THE YEAR

Fellow Modelers, 6 December 1999

Each year the National Free Flight Society (NFFS) honors a group of
noteworthy designs, as a part of the annual Symposium Report. These awards
are known as the NFFS Ten Models of the Year (TMOY). The TMOY process is
simple, and is started when nomination packages are submitted to the Chairman
who reviews them for completeness and suitability. The chairman distributes
the nominations to an appropriate review committee who determine the winners.
The Chairman then sends winning nomination packages to the Symposium Editor
for printing.
Nominations for this honor are accepted from anywhere in the free flight
community and are typically for models of the modern era which exhibit unique
design and outstanding performance as proven in competition. On occasion a
special award is given for a unique component, tool or material which has
greatly contributed to the advancement of an event or free flight as a whole.
Nomination packages for either must include:

1. One-page description of model design and competition record, or unique
contribution for a component, tool or material.
2. Resume of modeler/designer or inventor.
3. One-page three-view with dimensions.
4. Photograph of nominated item, and modeler or inventor.

Additionally all text must be submitted electronically, preferably in
Microsoft Word format, via E-Mail or diskette. Deadline for completed
nominations is a postmark of 12 February 2000. This deadline is determined
by publishing schedules and can not be neglected; therefore, late nominations
will NOT be accepted. Nominators (not the Chairman) are responsible for the
completeness of packages (all 4 Parts). Again, the major emphasis is on
receiving "complete" packages by the deadline to ensure a smooth running
process. Please send nominations to the address below.

Thank you for your nominations! Thermals!

NFFS National Cup announcement

Roger

Thanks for posting the initial announcement of the NFFS National Cup in the
Christmas addition of the SCAT EN. I would like to provide a few additional
remarks for the readers. The text of the NC Rules survived almost intact in
the EN with only a few areas scrambled due to transmission to you as an
e-mail attachment. I will be happy to send hard copies of the NC Rules and
Events Report Form by snail mail to all interested Clubs, modelers and CD's.

[Ed comment - Bob's original announcment was sent in Microsoft Word Format - we
reformatted it into plain ASCII text. This certainly caused the
scrambling Bob mentioned. We did not do the same with the results
form and just attched it in the original format. Generally speaking
we put important text, like Bob's announcement into plain ASCII
so it can be read immediately without having to put it into MS Word
or the like.]

The goal of the annual National Cup Competitions is to promote the
traditional AMA Power, Rubber and Glider events and NFFS Nostalgia in the U.
S. and in Canada and Mexico. The Rules for the NC closely resemble the
America's Cup, awarding points to event winners depending on their placing,
the number of event entrants, etc, etc. Year-end winners of the annual NC
Competitions events will be recognized the following August at the NFFS
Banquet during the AMA NATS / USOC.

Nearly all AMA-sanctioned FF contests can qualify as NC Competitions if at
least one event in AMA Power, Rubber, Glider and one NFFS Nostalgia event
are scheduled (no combined events allowed). The current Canadian MAAC Rules
for FF are consistent with AMA Regulations in enough areas to potentially
allow designation of certain contests in Canada as NC Competitions.

NFFS hopes that the National Cup will result in the same level of national
interest and competitive spirit for AMA and Nostalgia events as now shown by
the many dedicated FAI participants in the America's Cup. All modelers
should consider the announcements of the National Cup as an open invitation
to check the Rules and request designation of their Club contests scheduled
in Year 2000 as National Cup Competitions. A NC Committee is being formed
with a member from each of the four NFFS Districts to assist in providing
information and support to FF Clubs interested in National Cup
participation. For contacting the Committee members, names and addresses of
the current appointees are included in the Rules document.

Best wishes for the New Year,

Bob Perkins

Roger, I have been reading all the BOM material that has been going back and
forth in this newsletter. I personally think that the development that is
happening has increased the number of people in the sport. With the
intensity of business and less time for families to spend with hobbies, the
fact that parts and pieces and whole airplanes are available make it
reasonable for a modeler to get involved. If the BOM supporters wish to fly
no trip models they can fly SLOP, and nostalgia; which could break down into
1/2A,A,B,C,D. I can't believe that there is any modeler that can fly 10
events over a period of a few days at a AAA meet. I wonder sometimes if some
of the nostalgia competitors are legal if they repair their model with a thin
strip of carbon CAed in place(chuckle). Everybody who flies these events uses
CA, epoxies, carbon, fibreglass props, fuel proofer, and newer fuels; all
that were not available years ago, etc. I think a lot of BOM modelers are
forgetting all of this. It is difficult at times for me to keep up with
what's developing, but I don't go backwards. There have been dozens of
letters in this newsletter over the past year, the time and energy it has
taken to compose these opinions should have been utilized to obtain permanent
freeflight flying sites; especially in the east. Even the effort to restore
Galeville as a freeflight site has been left to a few diehard members of the
Skyscraper club. These guys could use some support and the use of all the
BOM discussion energy. Without fields to fly on it becomes academic.

[Joe

You're correct, we have lots of categories to fly, with a wide variety
of rules. I agree that we can be very selectively nostalgic, I read
the rules of those events and chuckle because they seem to be more
complicated than the FAI events I fly. I think we have much more important
issues than BOM or changing the rules - flying sites as you mention
is a major issue if not the major issue that free flighters face.

Every time I go to Waegell field to fly I think what a terrible place it
is with the rough ground, canal, farms etc. Then I realize how fortunate
the FF community is having a site so close to the major city of Sacramento.
At one Sierra Cup there I
met a couple Jerry Fitch's friends from his office who came out to see him
fly. There are some guys I work with who whould like to come out, but the 150
miles each way from LA to Lost Hills is a long way for the casual observer. ]
