AA Correction
=============

Roger,

Point of Information: Alex was NOT defending his title because
he was NOT the Reigning Champion. At Maniago in '96, he placed 2nd in
the 10 minute round behind Mario Kusterle, of Italy. In fact, Alex only
heard, about three weeks ago, that he was selected for Ukrainian Team.
They have a 2 year selection program and he's been gone for the past
year, but had accumulated enough points in 1 year that he still made the
Team versus other flyers 2 year results ! I visited his house last
Saturday night, before he left on the Sunday, and Tanya was helping him
weigh motors, while Vladi was stranding them (but not lubricating or
tying the knots until just before the event). I think that's all the
preparation he has done ! As the '98 European Champs results confirm,
Alex was on the Ukrainian Team, and was not flying for the USA yet !
Enjoy it while you can guys Vladi is leading the America's Cup with
more than double anyone else's points total and has already qualified for
the US Team Selection Finals !

Martyn

Martyn [and Alex] , my applogies for the in accuracies and thanks for
the correction. We are all too well aware of Vladi's performance. Hopefully
college [university] and other distractions will give us old
guys a chance.

Serious US FAI flyers are some what envious of the Europeans with the
Euro Champs. The think it does give the european flyer a big
advantage in not only compeition experince but
the opportunit to share ideas etc. They fail to see by what
logic Israel is permitted to compete. [It would be ok if it was
the European and Middle Eastern Champs ] .. so cannot
resist the opportunity to needle the euro flyers from time to time -
hence the comments from George and myself.

Roger

Scania Cup
----------

Scania Cup 1998 was flown on 11th of July. The event was - unfortunately -
a kind of second division competition, being flown on the same weekend as
the Von Hafe Cup at the European Championships site, in Portugal. Still
the participation was pretty good, with 18 (?) fliers in F1A and 13 in
F1B. The F1C was a "domestic" competition, with all three fliers coming
from Sweden. In the former two classes there were fliers also from
Denmark, Finland, Germany and Norway.

The weather was quite nice. On arrival day a westerly wind was blowing
some 3 to 4 meters per second, under an overcast sky. The next morning was
clear and calm, and this remained until the start of the competition. On
second round the wind picked up a little, and after three rounds the
sea-breeze started to take over (the Rinkaby field is quite close to the
seashore), turning the wind almost 180 degrees towards south-east. Thus,
the flight-line was moved to the other end of the field. In the afternoon
a warm front arrived, overcasting the skies. At this time lift-picking got
a bit trickier, the lift being weak and patchy. On sixth round we had a
little shower, but not more rain like was forecasted.

In glider Heikki Tahkapaa led until the last round, when he dropped half a
minute to become second after Fritz Wilkening. Pekka Ronkanen took bronze,
the three other places going to Lars Larsson and Anna Lena Lund, and the
first junior, Mikko Sivonen.

The lift picking had been hard, as no one made full house in F1A. In F1B
there were three. The fly-off was delayed by one hour in hopes of wind
calming down, which it did, so the contestants decided to go straight to 7
minutes. The lift was still tricky, as Bernd Silz made 6 minutes and 12
seconds, while Tapio Linkosalo got only 3 minutes and 32 seconds despite
launching some 15 seconds earlier, and climbing about the same air. Yrji
Waltonen flew about a minute later, and took second place with a flight 3
seconds longer than Tapio's. The fourth place went to Jorgen Korsgaard,
and fifth to Manfred Hoffmann.

In F1C, only Gunnar Ugren flew all the flights, thus winning Lars-Gunnar
Lindblad and Eddy Astfeldt.

So the top placings were:

F1A

1. Fritz Wilkening (GER)
2. Heikki Tahkapaa (FIN)
3. Pekka Ronkanen (FIN)
4. Lars Larsson (SWE)
5. Anna Lena Lund (SWE)
6. Mikko Sivonen (FIN)

F1B

1. Bernt Silz (GER)
2. Yrjo Waltonen (FIN)
3. Tapio Linkosalo (FIN)
4. Jorgen Korsgaard (DEN)
5. Manfred Hoffmann (GER)

F1C

1. Gunnar Ugren (SWE)
2. Lars-Gunnar Lindblad (SWE)
3. Eddy Astfeldt (SWE)

Palm Bay - site of US Team Selection Finals - not on fire !

I was CD last weekend at the FL state f/f champs. The turnout was poor
Because of all of the forrest fires. Over 100 miles of I-95 were closed to
All traffic so most of the people north of Palm Bay could not get there.

It was quite smokey, however we flew all 7 round with 3 min. Maxes with out
Difficulty. We flew FAI combined.
Blaine Miller maxed out in Wake to win, Jim Bradley was second, followed by
Jody Miller.

As far as hot. Between 95 and 100 both days during the early p.m.
