2021 AmCup Final Results and Report

Some numbers on the 2021 FAI FF AmCup season. 20 flyers of the top 50 flyers in the 10 events were not in the top 5 last year. Therefore 30 flyers returned to the top 5. The best I can tell 3 of the flyers are in the top 5 for the first time. 8 of this year’s winners were in the top 5 last year. 2 of the flyers repeated their win from 2020. I’ll let the reader draw their own inferences from this data.

Let’s start with F1E! Of the 7 F1E contests flown in 2021, only one (Denver, CO) was not at Lost Hills. One rule change for 2022 will be (for F1E the only) the rule “2 scores from one site” to “3 scores from one site”. SCAT is currently looking at other rule changes but you’ll have to read to the end to see what the thinking is. F1E is getting several “cross-over” flyers from F1A, B and G. F1E was the only event not to have a perpetual trophy which is currently being manufactured. I pulled the past winners name which started in 2006. This year Bob Sifleet returned to 1st (he won in 2018), his buddy Tom Ioerger 2nd, the consistent flyers Fred Terzian 3rd, Peter Brocks 4th (1st from 2006 thru 2017!) and newbie Mike McKeever 5th.

Juniors: The top junior flyers for 2021 are Noa Goldstein in F1A, Skylar Donnelly repeated in both F1B and F1S and Henry Feistel also repeated in F1P. Well done.

Electric: Ben Tarcher flew a bunch of F1Q contests (scored in 13 contest, a tie for the highest number) but could not manage to win the only bonus point contest (NATs) so he tied Julie Parker with 100 points each. With the many contests flown resulted in Ben won at the second level tie breaker. Therefore Julie is 2nd. 3rd and 4th to Bob Sifleet and Jack Murphy, they were close with 94 and 95 points. Aram Schlosberg was 5th a bit further back.

Jack Murphy was one of the repeat winner, he won F1S again with 101 points. Scored in 12 contests. His fellow flyers spread out the points so there was no one else close. 2nd was Julie Parker with 82 points. Clint Brooks 43rd, Larry Norvall 4th and a new face on the scene, Janna VanNest took 5th.

Power: F1J is making a comeback and leading the charge is Mike McKeever who managed to de-thrown the winner of the last several years Faust Parker (2nd this year). Mike made the 12 hour drive to Eloy for Az Champs, the last AmCup contest of the year to snatch the lead from Faust. Mike scored in 12 contests. Glenn Schneider 3rd, Terry Kerger 4th and I believe the first time in the top 5 is Don Bartick,

Mike McKeever was not the only one to make a drive to Eloy in hopes of an AmCup win. Mike Fedor drove 14 hours and as did Bob Hanford drove 17 hours to Eloy. The two were in a tie in F1P. Maybe the long drive? Bob hooked his lines up wrong and DT’d at the engine cut off. So Mike Fedor 1st, Bob 2nd, they were the only ones to meet the 3 site rules so 3rd thru 5th scores were much lower.

While Faust Parker was pushed down in F1J he still reigns in F1C for his umpteenth win. He was the only one to meet the 3 site rule.

Rubber: Jerry Fitch, Jerry Fitch! Jerry won both F1B and F1G. I think it’s the first time in rubber. Jerry did a lot of flying, he placed in 11 F1B contests and 13 in F1G, a tie for the highest number. Both events were hotly contested. In F1B Alex Andriukov was 2 points lower for 2nd. Last year’s winner Blake Jensen was 3rd followed by Walt Ghio and then Aram Schlosberg. IF we awarded an L.H. Cup award, Sevac Malkhasyan would get it. Of the last six LH F1B contests, he won 5 and placed 2nd in the other! I was a timer in several of these spectacular F.O.’s. World class indeed.

In F1G Tiff O’Dell was staying close to Jerry thru the year but her injured shoulder got much worse and she did not fly the last 2 LH contests and took 2nd. Our NFFs / MMM guy Don Deloach was 3rd. John McGrath was 4th and I believe his first time in the top 5. Ladi Horak in 5th won 3 of the Oct. LH contest but did not have other site wins to place higher.

Glider—the Good Stuff! The long drive that Mike Fedor made also paid off in F1H. He stole--- I said stole the F1H first place position from me. Mike beating me at the NATs for the only bonus point this year had something to do with his win too. Well done Mike. And so I’m second. The rest of the field did not meet the 3 site rule.

F1A, Going into the Oct contest at LH, I knew I had a good chance to catch Enes Pecenkovis but it would take winning a 29 or 30 point bonus contest. Enes had been flying a lot, many practice sessions and many contests (scored in 12 contests0. Uhm, six of the AmCup winners scored in over 11 (or a third) of the AmCup contests. I’ll let the reader draw their own inferences from this data. I made 4 FO’s but could not get a win. It even came down to a morning FO between just the two of us. Enes won by 19 seconds. Great win for Enes. Ken Bauer, Brian VanNest and Mike Mckeever place 3rd, 4th and 5th

Congratulation to the 2021 AmCup Winners.
That’s the wrap for 2021, entry levels still a bit down but the competition levels are still high.

2021 Award Presentation:
Due to the current unavailability of the LH Recreation building, we assume to C-19 restrictions, we baselined the 2022 the AmCup Awards to will be on the LH field on Friday, Feb. 18 (after MM minis). SCAT will provide hors d’oeuvres and drinks. If the LH Rec room becomes available at the first of the year we’ll re-plan if feasible.

The 2020 winners, please get your perpetual trophy engraved and polished up. If you do not plan to be at Fab Feb, Lost Hills, please make arrangements to get the trophy to the 2021 winners.

Going into 2022, we have base lined the same contests as those in 2021. If a club / CD wishes to remove their contest or request to have a contest added please contact me. The AmCup fee remains at $30.

Mentioned at the beginning was the rule change for F1E. SCAT is also currently evaluating two other changes. First being starting the bonus points at 5 entries (currently it starts at 6 entries). The second change is to the point increment (or steps) of 5 points down from first place 25 points. An analysis was done by rescoring the 2021 scores. These are being reviewed by the club. Changes to the 2022 Rules will be sent to SEN and NFFs by Jan 22, 2022, the start of the SWR in Eloy AZ, the first AmCup contest of the year.

Our appreciation to the clubs and CD’s that run the contests and send in the results.
