Some more SCAT History
From :Jim Parker on FB
One more bit of SCaTTer history. Found this, a historic summary I wrote in 2009 for the SCAT 50th anniversary. I copied parts from the hard to read mimeograph page I posted earlier.
SCAT 1959-1969, the Foundation Years
SCAT was instrumental in the formation of FAI FF competition in the USA and SCATTER was the means of spreading the message. Bill Hartill wrote in the first SCATTER, April 1961,
“SCAT’s main aim is to foster more serious attention on the developing and flying FAI class free flight models, and through the individual efforts of its members, to establish a hard core of active FAI modelers who can compete, on an equal basis, with other such serious modelers throughout the world. The purpose of this publication is to provide a publishing medium for technical information, 3-views, general FAI news, and other data pertaining to FAI models, for the benefit of like-minded modelers both here and overseas."
I can remember getting my first SCATTER and the thrill of seeing one of my designs captured by the non-surpassed drafting talent of Craig Cusick. The SCATTERs, from 1961 to 1969, were produced using typewriters, pencil, triangle drafting tools, mimeograph machine and countless licked postal stamps. During this period, the club met weekly with three of the meetings devoted to the creation and publication of the SCATTER. Bill Hartill was the heart and soul of the SCATTER. His editorials were sometimes controversial but they were always informative. Many other talented editors made their impact as well. Let us not forget the publishers that stayed after hours at their work and printed the SCATTERs on hand cranked mimeograph machines. For the first year the twelve SCATTERs were $1, postage was 3 cents!
After the first year of publishing, Bill wrote of SCATTER building a 25,000 mile workbench, “a comfortable informal place to gather with our modeling friends… a convenient spot that melts the thousands of miles between us… a common environment if you will, where the small groups and the isolated rugged individuals of our dedicated international clan can meet each month to exchange ideas, designs, techniques and opinions”
While SCATTER publication stopped in 2003, the aim of SCAT remains the same and continues via SCAT Electronic News (SEN), the America’s Cup, support of the open and junior program and the beginning of the Hartill Trophy.
We give our upward spiraling thanks to this dedicated group that laid the solid foundation we fly from on today.
Jim Parker, SCAT President, 2009
Thermiksense 2/2021
Thermiksense 2/2021 was just shipped. Besides the normal content we have
focussed on indoor and history.
The F1D-model of Uwe Bundesen without break in the wing is presented as well
as the layout and trimming of indoors with variable pitch propellers.
We look back to the first flight of a model, 150 years ago in Paris by
Alphonse Penaud. Dieter Siebenmann writes about the historical development
of free flight profiles.
