2021 SCAT Annual Report

Wow! A year has gone by since cancelling the 2020 SCAT Annual, first aeromodel contest Covid victim. The modeling world has learned more and has adaptive to this cotangent and we are now enjoying our outdoor sport. Travel is still limited so attendance is down.

The weather reports looked wonderful for the contest weekend. Those arriving to Lost Hills on Friday had great weather and the forecast was more of the same. But oh no, the Loaf started whistling at 3 am Saturday. At 6 am the nearby weather station was reporting 2 mph while my wind meter read 15 mph with gust to 20.  I sent an email out.to those that had registered Friday and those I thought were coming changing the first round to 9 am and that I would delay in 1 hour increments until noon. As the sun warmed us, the wind tapered off. At 10:30 it was flyable and we started round 1 at 10 am with 4-5 mph wind to the pits so the max time was set at 150 seconds--- I was so thankful we could fly.

The 12 F1A flyers and 9 F1B flyers flew 5 rounds with 98% maxes, 6 full scores each.  The F1A  6 minute FO  saw only one drop, Liad Friedman an up and coming junior--- his first fly off. In F1B, Jerry Fitch blew 2 or 3 motors, calmly got his flight off with 30 second left in the round. Looked good but the model came a few seconds short of the max.

The next morning had a 4 to 5 mph breeze, typical for LH this time of the year. F1A flew first, Enes Pencenkovic and Brain Van Nest launched soon after the round started. I launched 30-40 second later in what felt like firm air,  soon after Mike McKeever. Enes and Brian found solid air, Enes did just under 6 minutes and had Brian by 50 seconds for the win. Mike and I had what I can only describe as ugly air---- my Altimeter graph looked like DT, how can a modern flapper from 100 meters find the ground in 4 minutes!

F1B was next, the timers describe Larry Norval’s flight as standard until it was lower and it found favorable air for the win. I apologies that you’ll see ”tsb- to be supplied” by some scores—I failed to write the FO scores on the result sheet and left the time cards in the Loaf. Bill Booth was second with Mike Davis and Walt Ghio tied for third.

Back to Saturday. WCh F1C Taron Malkhasyan put in one flight to get the”20 Something” award. Ed Carroll was up to fly F1C but went home with an ailing foot. Buck Murry was the only AMA flyer, he flew ½A Nostalgia. Ben Tarcher was the only Q flyer.

Sunday forecast looked good but could it be believed? The sky was over cast with clouds forming over the West mountains. After the F1A&B FO the breeze tapered off and looked to be good---- good and tricky air.  The 11 Mini events flyer (F1H,G,J,S) achieved only 65% maxes, quite a change from Saturday.

In F1G, Tiff O’Dell and Jerry Fitch changed the leads several times with Jerry being in the lead at the end of 5 rounds.

I missed the first round in F1H but Blake made it interest flirting with a double attempt in a switchy breeze period. He towed his way to victory.

At 1 pm we did FAI awards for the contest and I was able to give out some of the 2020 Am Cup awards to Mike McKeever F1A, Blake Jensen F1B and Tiff O’Dell F1G.  AMA flying was schedule to 4 pm.

Nostalgia Wake was fun to watch as Larry Norval and Ates Gurcan stuck many maxes. Larry damaged his model on the fifth round as did Ates. Ates was able to repair his and put up a winning max.  Guy had 3 maxes but did not fly more--- perhaps a loooong chase for his wayward Nostalgia A flight.  Glen Schneider won Nostalgia A.

Finishing off the contest was Art Chmielenski flying P-30, Ben Tarcher Classic Glider, Bill Gannon Hand Launch glider and Jim Luekin beat Henry Feistel (jr) in catapult glider.

At 2:30 the western wind machine was turned on--- not terrible but enough we put our models away and packed up We gave out trophies at 3 pm.

And like that Mike and I were alone at LH enjoying pork chops, potatoes, salad and conversation. That night it rained and blew. Fortunately not so much rain to get stuck. 8am it cleared up – perfect flying conditions!

Thanks to Tiff  O’Dell and Tony Accurso for their great Face Book SCAT Annual photos. Even thanks to Randy Secor, not thinking the weather would improve on Saturday morning, he left for Laguna Seca with Bud Romack, great F.B. photos--- who wouldn’t want to go to a race track with Bud Romack?
