Variable or Mixed pitch?

Gil Morris has used variable pitch in the past.  A 6" propeller turning at 33,000 rpm, and a larger geared prop turning at whatever.  I am sure the two were not of the same pitch.

I was just looking at some old pictures of me at the 1959 NATS and and am still flying the same design again in 2020. 

That is real progress! Must stick with perfect when you find it.

Lost Talent

We had a very talented machinist in our club. Bruce Underwood was his name.
He was best known for manufacturing the Yellow Jacket racing engine for
miniature race cars. He got too old to drive so I'd pick him up each Friday
evening and take him to our club meeting. One night he told me he made a 60
size engine that was so powerful that when he put a 10" wooden prop on it,
it ran so fast that wood particles would separate from the tips which only
made it go faster and faster and as the prop got smaller and smaller the
room filled with a cloud of wood particles. He saw it pass 100,000 rpm and
shortly afterwords it flew apart into a million pieces. But, he said his
greatest achievement was when he drilled a 0.001" dia. hole through a 1"
thick slab of steel. He was one of a kind!

The FAI FF year started off with great competitions then Covid slammed on the brakes. Several contests have been cancelled and the rest of the year looks murky in my crystal ball. The contests that I have seen cancelled have been hidden in the Excel spreadsheet. I'm missing the Lost Hills Fab Feb F1E scores and the Hatschek International scores, I'll get those for the next report.  Nevertheless we’ll continue and see what we have at the end of the year with regard to the Award Banquet.   Jim Parker
