FF_EDIC

The CIAM EDIC subcommittee is the one that looks after and approves electronic devices for use in competition.  Up to this post of their work has been around devices for R/C events, one of the more well known is the altitude limited electric soaring events.  The main device in this category we use currently in Free Flight is the energy limiter used in F1Q.  There have been experiments in using altimeters.  In a recent CIAM meeting there was a proposal for the use of altimeters to determine  when an aircraft has landed. This was passed with the proviso from the President of the CIAM that the Free Flight TSC should work with the EDIC and use the resources and experience of that group.
The FF TSC has written a document that gives a pathway to doing this.  This NOT a  change to the current sporting code and is missing a number of key components , but it does sum up very well where we are currently at and the direction that we might go in.  The  FFTSC is asking for input.
Electronic timing devices are not needed for all classes of Free Flight but for the top level F1 World Champs classes they are fast becoming a necessity.  The has been much discussion in both the specialist press and on social media of various timing inequities.  Modern technology has made the needed components available at a reasonable cost, however for any specialized timing devices that we need the development cost and potential support costs far outweigh the cost of the parts.  For this to succeed the timing system must be produced at a reasonable cost and so it is readily available for all World Champs and World Cup participants. We cannot afford to waste time and money going in he wrong direction. Ideally some form of collaborative effort or maybe an “Angel Investor” would get us going along he lines this document suggests.
To read the document do to the CIAM Document section of the FAI web site at
https://www.fai.org/ciam-documents
Then click in the F1 Free Flight Blue bar(notr the down arrow), this will show a list of items.  The FF_EDIC_1.2.pdf is the top document.

Nelson Glow Plugs at Lost Hills World Champs

I will have Nelson glow plugs for sale at the Lost Hills World Champs.  The cost is $5 each.  Please send me an e-mail request with the amount you require by September 15.  This will give me enough time to order the glow plugs and have them delivered by the first week of October.

Also, I will have fuel tubing and bladder material available to purchase.

All items are from Doug Galbreath who has asked me to be his salesperson.

Dear Free Flight Friends,

I am happy to report on the U.S. National Aeromodeling Championships for
Free Flight. It was held August 5-9 at the International Aeromodeling
Center in Muncie, Indiana.  Moderate weather, not too hot, with calm days
Monday, Wednesday and Friday made it especially pleasurable for all.

I am very grateful to the volunteers, who assisted with score recording
(Lisa Pacelli, Patti Lorbiecki, Julie Parker, Jeri Kluiber, Malav Shah,
Skilly DeLoach, Sally Clapp), processing (Faust Parker, Chuck Powell, Linda
Powell, Ross Jahnke, Bobby Geyer, Chris Matsuno, John Clapp), helpful
walk-up volunteers (Graham, David) event directing (Aram Schlosberg, Jerry
Murphy, Faust Parker, Chuck Markos, Mike Fedor, Malav Shah, Tim Batiuk, Jan
Langelius, Rudy Kluiber, Bill Reuter, Lousie Reuter, Mike Welshans, Pat
Murray, Bill Kuhl, Dan Berry), NFFS president John Lorbiecki, Nats News
Rick Pangell, championship scorer Bob Hanford, FAI tabulator Ross Jahnke,
Medic David Gerspacher and the onsite AMA staff (especially Yolanda Jones,
Marcy Bizzell, Maria VanVreede and Joyce Hager). What a great support team!

Some extraordinary good flying took place.  Very long strings of maxes were
needed to win AMA Gas, classic Gas and NFFS nostalgia events.  There were
two national records set.  One by Stan Buddenbohm in E-36 with 16 straight
maxes!!  Another record by Skilly DeLoach in Junior P-30 with a max out,
plus three minute and four minute maxes!! The best performances in FAI were
by Greg Simon, winning F1B in a flyoff against Brian Pacelli and and Aram
Schlosberg, and by Bob Sifleet winning F1S in a second flyoff flight
against Don DeLoach and Jack Murphy.  Seven fliers maxed out in F1S.

The category champions are Ronnie Thompson (Gas events), Dan Berry (Classic
Gas events), Bob Hanford (Nostalgia Gas events), Ross Jahnke (Rubber
events), Ed Sneed (Nostalgia Rubber events), Jack Murphy (Electric events),
Tim Batiuk (Glider events), William Reuter (Junior Champion) and Larson
Rignlien (Senior Champion).  These and others with high totals are listed
in the attached.

For the AMA events you can find scores by visiting
https://www.modelaircraft.org/nats-search?field_event_session_type=210&year=2019
.

For NFFS and FAC events, Rick Pangell, Don DeLoach and I have those as pdf
files from photos of score sheets, and we may be able to distill those for
more compact viewing.

For FAI events, here below are the round-by-round scores.

It was a pleasure to serve as the Contest Director.  With appreciation,
Andrew Barron
